St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

PRAYER FOR OUR PARISH

Thank you, Jesus, for we have found a home in the parish of St. Emile. It is here that we hope to learn, to grow, to love, to share, and to renew our lives. Send your Holy Spirit as we discern the path that we must take, that will lead us closer to You. Help us to cherish and to appreciate our brothers and sisters, to offer our gifts and talents when needed, to pray, to look after the sick and the needy, and to welcome the stranger and the outcast. Teach us to be patient, humble, gentle and kind in the relationships that we build. Help us to take responsibility for the life of our parish and to labour for the holiness of its members. We ask this in the Name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

PASTOR/PARISH LIFE DIRECTOR Submitted by: Father Gerry Sembrano

The past year has proven most challenging to me as a parish priest. Together with our different parish ministers and volunteers, we found endless ways to learn new ways to reach our parishioners and to nurture their faith.

HOLY EUCHARIST Weekday Masses: Monday to Saturday 9:30 am Weekend Masses: Saturday 5pm and Sunday 9am, 11am, and 3pm (new) Every Mass is livestreamed in order to reach our parishioners who are unable to attend. With the ever-changing protocols of the government, our website, our facebook page, and have all been useful in reaching out to our home-bound parishioners.

We have a team of videographers who take turns in recording our Masses, supervised by Nae Narine and our sound director Richard Cornwell.

Healing Mass Due to Covid Restriction of public touching, we have suspended our healing Masses. Healing oil is made available to parishioners upon request.

Confessions Every Friday from 10 until noon. People also call to make an appointment for Reconciliation. Some come from other parishes who cannot be accommodated by their own parish.

Baptisms Baptisms were held upon request either during the weekday or weekend. Last year, we had a total of 14 children who were baptized. Jackie Kohut conducts Baptismal Preparation Class every second Saturday of the month.

Adoration Every day, after daily Masses we have adoration of the Blessed Eucharist until noon. People may sign up if they want to stay longer or later in the afternoon.

Weddings Despite COVID restrictions we held 7 Weddings last year, with a few participants ranging from 10 to 50.

Outside Masses in Care homes / Retirement Homes have not resumed since the beginning of Covid in March 2020.

Anointing of the Sick There have been requests from different private homes and at times from care homes, especially when the patient is dying.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

Retreats We had our virtual Advent and Lenten retreats by different members of our parish. Their short talks were compiled to form a single theme for the two seasons. Seven, which was a meditation on the Seven Last Words of Jesus were presented by seven parishioners who shared about their experiences of a particular word of Jesus on the cross. This was done virtually.

First Reconciliation and Holy Communion Before the Pandemic, 7 children from the parish and 7 children from St. Emile School did their first Reconciliation. Unfortunately, because of COVID restrictions, we did not have First Communion and Confirmation last year.

R.C.I.A. Deacon Gilles Urquhart led a team to conduct a series of lessons on the Catholic faith which was attended by candidates for R.C.I.A. and some parishioners who just wanted to learn more about their Catholic faith. After the course, Jane Udoh received her First Communion and Confirmation, while Michael Wong, Karen Charnesky and Ryan Querel were baptized, received First Holy Communion and Confirmation. These were held after the celebration of Easter.

Funerals We had a total of 10 funerals during the year. It was most difficult for many because of the limited amount of people who could attend and say goodbye to their loved one.

Overall, we are working very hard to accommodate our parishioners and their spiritual needs. We continue to invite volunteers to help in our Sacramental Preparation courses. We also need people who can help and volunteer in technical aspects such as computer, audiovisual, and networking. We are also grateful for all the efforts and contributions of our volunteers.

Parish Administrative/Finance Committee The Parish Administrative/Finance Committee has distinct responsibilities from those of the PPC and functions independently of it. The two bodies each have a representative who attend the meeting of the other, to facilitate ongoing communication and collaboration.

Parishioners at Large (2) Parishioners at large serve as liaison between the general parish membership and PPC. They do not have predetermined roles but may be defined according to the PPC needs to meet specific goals. The parishioners at large serve to get input, provide feedback, and become a spokesperson for the parish membership.

Ad Hoc Committee Ad Hoc Committee are normally assembled to address a specific issue/purpose. Membership is voluntary or solicited to meet the need of the committee. The Ad Hoc Committee which is formed within the PPC reports to PPC. It ceases to exist when the assigned task is completed or no longer required. • Ad Hoc Committee: Covid-19 (March 2020-present)- created to address needs of Parish in accordance to Covid-19 Pandemic Response.

General Report Co-Chair: April 2020-August 2020 under Past-Chair Paulette Dupuis • The first-third of fiscal year, the Past-chair focus was the formation of the Covid Ad Hoc Committee to respond to Provincial Orders and St. Boniface Archdiocese guidelines and provide recommendations to Fr. Sembrano and all affected individual ministries (e.g. Lectors, Greeters) for ongoing safe operations of St. Emile during restrictions. (See details on Covid Ad Hoc Committee report Part 1) • The second focus was with the election of new PPC Executive. ▪ Following Diocesan advice, a Nominations Committee was formed with the goal to hold elections for a new PPC Executive. ▪ Nominations were received from PPC members and accepted by Fr. Sembrano. ▪ The Elections Committee had expedited nominations and election necessitated by Archdiocese request for then current PPC Chair to fill a need and position in the Archdiocese.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

▪ Election took place in August 2020 and all positions of new PPC Executive committee were filled. (as outlined in current co-chair report). ▪ Past PPC Chair thanked everyone present during election and expressed availability to support and assist newly elected executive members as needed.

The new PPC executive committee came into office in the midst of Covid-19 Pandemic, in August 2020. Thus, PPC activities have been limited in accordance to constantly changing Provincial Orders in Pandemic response. The following activities have been fulfilled from August 2020 to March 2021. • The Co-chairs prepared agenda for first PPC meeting with newly elected executive committee in collaboration with Fr. Sembrano • Facilitated PPC meetings (1 in person in September 2020 and 1 virtual in November 2020) • Participated in the “Anticipation and Return of Pastoral Activities in Light of our New Reality”- Facilitated by Director of Pastoral Services- St. Boniface Archdiocese (September 29,2020- online via Teams) -Reflection and discussion of how parishes plan to continue to serve its community in light of new reality and how parishes envision resuming activities. • Attended first of the Archdiocese Diocesan Pastoral Council (DPC) meetings held twice a year (September-August Fiscal Year) November 24, 2020- online via Teams A. Presentation on “Marriage: How to Be a “First Responder” For Struggling Marriages” Discussion centered on: a) resources individual parishes have to support marriages; b) Who is the first point of contact in your parish for couples who are struggling or have questions; c) How can we support them? Would you see value in training additional people in your parish to become first responders? B. Family- Discussion Impact of the pandemic on families and how parish can reach out to them. • Facilitated Online via Zoom PPC meeting to address 1) Advent Preparation in light of church closure due to Covid Response measures, 2) impact on St. Emile Parish Community. 3) Brainstorm on how to collectively support each other and faithful community during pandemic and Advent. Resulted in plans for live-streaming and 2 initiatives to reach out to parishioners: a) phone -call initiative lead by Knights of Columbus, and b) mailing Initiative lead by Hospitality Ministry (see reports). • Ongoing communication between Co-chairs and Fr. Sembrano to help foster pastoral activity and facilitate full parish community engagement.

Next Steps for PPC: (June 2021-March 2022) • To complete the following ▪ Review Mission/Vision Statement- to Pass and Publish • To review the PPC Guidelines version 2 (Feb. 2020) to incorporate definition for Co-Chairs and Co Vice-Chairs, and recommendations to have wordings in better alignment with the Guidelines for Parish Pastoral Councils “From the ‘Upper Room’ to the ‘Ends of the Earth’” (Archdiocese of St. Boniface, Oct. 2019)

ASSISTING GRIEVING FAMILIES MINISTRY (New) Submitted by: Sister Mariette Rivard

This ministry intervenes with those who are deeply suffering the loss of a loved one. The goal is to provide support and consolation to the bereaved in the hopes of facilitating acceptance and relief as they trust us and relate their story of loss.

This ministry reaches out to the bereaved and gently help them realize that eventually their loving God will turn their darkness into light.

In this ministry I have an important role to play in the way people go through the process of grieving.

I have only reached one person by phone. My primary role has been to listen to the bereaved as they expressed their grief.

Plans to the end of March 2022 • To determine how this ministry can identify for the bereaved a support network • To determine the ways that focus on supporting particular aspects of grieving. • Explore the different aspect of ministering such as a home visitor, liturgical helper, family support person, support group facilitator, funeral follow-up visitor, hospice care provider, and more. • Continue to work closely with Fr. Sembrano in supporting the bereaved.

FAITH AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH MINISTRY A G M report 2020 – 2021 Submitted by: Bonnie Cornwell

This ministry seeks to reach out to parishioners wherever they may be in their spiritual journey, to offer varied forms of informative gatherings where they may encounter Christ more fully. We pray that by our endeavors, there will be a greater openness to the works of the Holy Spirit and a renewed desire to discover “the Word” leading to healing and wholeness.

This past year has been difficult for many Ministries throughout our parish and in the archdiocese, in fact there is no one who has been unscathed by the great pandemic that we are in at the present time. This storm has in fact lasted much longer than anyone could have imagined. It is a time for prayer. it is a time for faith. It is a time for spiritual growth. Although this ministry may seem to have been dormant, it has truly been alive. This is not our doing. It is the power of the Holy Spirit.

Accomplishments

We ended last year with the cancellation I have a two-day retreat that was scheduled for the Lenten season. We had hoped that we might reschedule but it was not to be.

With the support of Adrian Sul and the prayer support from Caridad Reno and other parishioners, Announcements/ Invitations were sent out by email to some parishioners, keeping in mind, not to use contact information without permission. This was to advise those persons of upcoming presentations that may have been of interest to those who were seeking information, prayer support, spiritual teachings, etc... We had hoped that these messages would make their way to others who might be interested.

Under the heading of Faith and Spiritual Growth, I placed regular messages of encouragement into the weekly bulletin.

An announcement was placed in the bulletin before Lent to invite parishioners to join in a Lenten scripture study by way of Zoom. A few of us were able to meet and share our understanding and meditation on the upcoming Sunday readings.

Plans

In response to Archbishop LeGatt’s recent comments, we will try to establish an informal Zoom meeting for those interested in sharing with each other some part of their journey in these times as well as perhaps a reflection on the Book of Acts. This is only in the first stages of consideration.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

We hope to begin a series (in the bulletin) that will explain briefly and invite any and all to take part in the healing journey called Healing the Family Tree. Perhaps this is a great undertaking but we have been called to go out to deeper water. With the help of the Holy Spirit, this ministry will work to bring every fish, every soul into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

We are thankful for the support of Father Gerry Sembrano and members of the parish, brothers and sisters in their varied ministries who have so strongly supported Saint Emile Parish in these difficult days.

HOSPITALITY MINISTRY April 1,2020 to March 31,2021 Submitted by Christy Nnadi

Membership: Christy Nnadi (Chairperson) Nancy St-Hilaire Milly O’Toole Paulette Dupuis Sharon Gregoire Adrian Sul Vangie Cordova Aurora Fissette.

Mission: • To present opportunities for interaction between parishioners. • To welcome new parishioners and visitors and help them to mingle. • To encourage all parishioners to get involved in all Parish activities.

Activities in 2020 • The scourge of COVID-19 hit the whole world in February-March 2020, thereby bringing almost all our hospitality activities to a halt. • However, the Ministry continued to send St. Emile Parish condolence cards, get-well cards, congratulatory cards (for weddings, baptisms, first-communion and confirmation, etc.) with appropriate prayer card inserts, to Parishioners affected. • All Parish shut-ins continued to receive greeting/ prayer cards through the Hospitality Ministry.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

2020 CHRISTMAS CARDS At a PPC zoomed meeting in November, it was decided that Hospitality Ministry, in collaboration with the Legion of Mary and other volunteers, would facilitate the writing and mailing out of Christmas cards to all parishioners to keep the Parish community spirit alive despite Corvid-19. Here are the names of members of our team:

• From the Hospitality Ministry: Paulette Dupuis, Nancy St-Hilaire, Milly O’Toole, Adrian Sul. • From the PPC: Geraldine Wilkinson, Rosemary Couteau, Bonnie Cornwell, Donna O’Toole. • From the Legion of Mary: Liberty Bulalhog, Caridad Rino, Nelly Trinidad, Myrna Mah, Remy De Guzman, Yvette La Fleche, Sandra Guitche, Ronnie Fuentes, Amalia De Jesus, Gloria David, Linda McQueen, Thelma Legade and Fr. Gerry Sembrano. • Others: Sister Mariette Rivard, SMS, Joanna KimjinKyung Kim and Joan Hutlet. Joan donated 12 cards which she made. Fr. Gerry and many other parishioners also donated generously. What a collective Parish effort! • Alexandra, the office administrator and her family stamped all the cards (approximately 400 cards) and posted them. Feedback: • Incredibly positive. Many were surprised and commended the Parish for being so sensitive and taking steps to cheer its members up during the lockdown. • Two visitors from another Parish thought it would be nice to introduce to their home Parish at Christmas,” pandemic or no pandemic.” • Geraldine, our team leader in the Ministry of care heard from our shut-ins who were delighted to receive the Parish cards, especially when families could not visit.

Challenges: • Few cards came back because people moved but did not inform the Parish. While some are not in the Parish Registry. • We had just enough people to maintain Covid 19 protocol given by the chair Zorina Chang. • More people wanted to help but cards were already distributed to the first group of volunteers.

Recommendation: That a card be sent to every family/member of the Parish at Christmas time, making it a St- Emile tradition.

LITURGICAL MINISTRY (April 1, 2020- March 31, 2021) Submitted by Joan Hutlet, Reviewed and edited by Zorina Marzan Chang

Liturgical Ministry

The Liturgical Ministry is comprised of parishioners who have been called to serve God’s people as Lectors and/or Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. The Ministry strives to strengthen, enrich, and nurture a positive culture of ministers who are engaging as Lectors or Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, in order to enhance the experience of the people of God as they come together to pray, to reflect, to learn, and celebrate. Liturgical Ministry is comprised of: 1. Lectors and/or 2. Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist

Committee Members:

• Fr. Gerry Sembrano • Liturgical Ministry Co-Chairs- Zorina Marzan Chang [email protected] 431-997-3882 Joan Hutlet [email protected] 204-261-1374 • Liturgical Ministry Scheduler: Joan Hutlet • Orientation Coordinator: Tina Eruja and Zorina Marzan Chang • Combined Liturgical and Hosting Ministry Scheduler, and special mass scheduler- Shirley Gillespie

Ministers:

Total of 73 Ministers (Lectors n= 31 and /or Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist n=42) • 5 new lectors • currently there are only 22 available lectors. This is making the scheduling of lectors for the 3 Sunday masses increasingly difficult. • Prior to reopening of churches in the fall, families were encouraged and assigned to assist Fr. Sembrano with all liturgical duties at the 3 pm Sunday mass.

Changes affecting Liturgical Ministry due to Covid. • Self-screening the morning of scheduled attendance. Any positive response to the screening requires that the scheduled lector do not attend mass and must find replacement. • Workbook for Lectors are still available for signing out but are now individually bagged, labelled clean, and must be returned in a return box where it remains for at least 7 days prior to being available for sign out again.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

• Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist have not been scheduled. Only the Priest or Deacon distribute communion. Only the presider consumes from the chalice. • When the number of people attending a service is greatly limited due to Covid pandemic response, only one Lector is scheduled to do both Readings, Psalm (if no cantor), and Prayer intentions (if Deacon in not present). • Mass a) no entrance procession b) scheduled lector read the pre-mass announcements about Covid protocols or any additional announcements asked by Father. c) Use of face mask in accordance to Provincial order. Mandatory use of face mask when moving about and hand hygiene when taking off or putting on mask. o mask on when you go up to the altar o hand sanitize (unless you already did when you left your seat) o take off mask o do the reading o hand sanitize o put back mask o hand sanitize (unless you plan to do at your seat) o return to seat d) no recessional

Ongoing Activities: (all online) 1. Articulate the role and responsibilities of the ministries (twice a year). 2. Create a schedule of Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers (every two months). Scheduling: for the 4 mass times (Sat. 5 pm, Sun. 9,11 am, and 3 pm). Lectors signed up for extra masses at Christmas and during Holy Week. 3. Provide educational and training opportunities (online) - Revised Lector and Eucharistic Ministers’ Guide (developed in 2013) with updates last November 2019. Addendum: Covid Protocol - 6 “Workbook for Lectors” - follow book lending Covid protocol 4. Promote theological reflection, learning, and appreciation of the liturgy. 5. Increase membership by recruiting parishioners for service opportunities that draw upon their interest and gifts 6. Inform ministers about the work of the Committee. 7. Invite and encourage ministers to participate in the Committee. 8. Collaborate with other committees of the Parish Pastoral Council. 9. Report to the Parish Pastoral Council. 10. Annual reporting for St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting Proposed Projects/Action Plan: 1. Continue with ongoing membership drive by having a standing invitation to the Liturgical Ministry placed on the Parish Bulletin published every first Sunday of the month. 2. Explore virtual Orientation offering during Pandemic Restrictions.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

3. Explore feasibility of regularly scheduled virtual meetings, update with Covid protocols and reconnecting as opportunity to support each other during the pandemic, or allow for conversations to promote theological reflection, learning, and appreciation of the liturgy. 4. Continue to explore workshop offerings (online).

Communications: on going through emails, as needs arise

With deepest gratitude to all the ministers for the continued support, flexibility, understanding, and commitment to the Liturgical Ministry and St. Emile Parish especially during these times of uncertainties.

LITURGICAL HOSTING MINISTRY April 1 2020-March 31 2021 Submitted by Donna O’Toole

This ministry strives to invite parishioners to take an active part in the celebration of the Mass serving as Greeters, Collectors, and Presenters of the Offertory Gifts.

Liturgical Hosting Membership: Donna O'Toole - Coordinator of Ministry Shirley Gillespie - Hosting Ministry Scheduler

There are actually two lists of Greeters: the “regular list” of greeters pre-Covid which hasn't been used for over a year and the Covid list of greeters in the Ministry. Member of Covid Greeters ’23”. (For 4 Masses)

I like to make note that a number of the greeters on the “Covid list” are from other ministries that have stepped in to cover the shortage of ministers for the Masses.

Ongoing: • Coordinator attends and reports to PPC. • Coordinator takes part in the Covid committee meetings. • Coordinator updates and conveys to the greeters Covid protocol and guidelines. (As of March 26/21: See Appendix A) • Coordinator articulates the role and responsibilities to the Greeters through email. • Coordinator, with help of the ministry, recruits parishioners for the Ministry. • Coordinator welcomes new greeters through emails and provides greeters with orientation information and Covid protocol and guidelines. • Scheduler keeps in close communication with coordinator of Liturgical Hosting and the co- chair of Liturgical Ministry. • Scheduler posts monthly Schedule on Bulletin Board and in weekly bulletin for members.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

Challenges: • Offertory basket (Due to Covid Collectors and presenter of Offertory Gifts on hold.). • How to keep Greeters feeling safe and empowered to carry out Covid protocol. (Greeters being challenged on Covid protocol. i.e. keep to maximum capacity, maintaining distance, hand hygiene entering a public space.) • Maintain sufficient number of Greeters.

Future plans: • Recruit a coordinator for the ministry. Donna O’Toole has resigned as of April 2021. • Recruit a Scheduler for the ministry. Shirley Gillespie will be relocating by end of June 2021. • Bulletins to be handed out after Mass. (after Covid) • Orientation (after Covid) • New name tags. A Generic Name tags. i.e. Greeter • Paper Resource for Hosting Ministry with frequently or not so frequently asked questions in the church. • Continue communication with members of the ministry regarding changes, provide reminders of hosting procedures through the bulletin, email and web site. • Invite parish Family members to be part of Ministry. • Continue close communication with our Liturgical Ministry Chairperson

Very special THANK YOU to Shirley Gillespie our Scheduler who is sending out emails to our hosting members and scheduling our dates so efficiently for this Ministry as well as integrating Hosting Ministers schedule with Liturgy Ministers schedule for the Bulletin each week. Blessings to all Hosting Ministers for making the commitment to Serve in the Holy Mass especially through the trying times of Covid.

MARRIAGE, FAMILY & LIFE MINISTRY (MFL)

Members - Beth & Edgar Cruz Fernand & Rhoda Tumambing Raymond & Len Sabio Peter Christle

The main goal of MFL ministry is to support and strengthen couples & families through programs and services that foster catholic vision of marriage, family and dignity of life.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY - submitted by Lilibeth Cruz

1. Last March 2021 we have 3 couples that went on training as Sponsor Couple for the parish. Now St Emile has its own Sponsor Couple to help those couples intending to get married. 2. We are still seeking other parishioners who are interested in joining the ministry. 3. We like to welcome couple Raymond & Len Sabio for volunteering and saying “yes” as Sponsored Couple. 4. As of now, all meetings and trainings are done via zoom.

LIFE- submitted by Peter Christle

Challenges:

• As a brand-new ministry at St. Emile Parish we are challenged with growing our team, and developing a Christ centered program that will lead, educate and encourage parishioners to strengthen our culture of life at St. Emile.

Mission:

• To support the parish ministry leadership in promoting the right to life from conception to natural death.

Vision:

• To lead and support the various pro-life ministries across the city, province & country in their efforts to bring pro life issues to the public consciousness. • To lead, educate and encourage parishioners to choose “life” through visible public support of the pro-life cause. • To partner with the Knights of Columbus (K of C) in strengthening and continuing to build a culture of life at St. Emile Parish.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

Accomplishments:

• K of C hosted the Silver Rose prayer service with Fr Gerry presiding on Mar 18/21 at St. Emile. “Through [the Silver Rose Program] we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the [the Knights of Columbus], but we also reaffirm [our] dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses.” – Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Approx. 20 people physically attended and I suspect many more through live streaming. Proposed Activities (subject to any COVID health restrictions):

• Screening of pro-life movie(s) in the Parish Hall available to all parishioners for free. A free- will offering to support various pro-life ministries would be encouraged. Streaming could possibly be used as a work-around in the event of COVID restrictions. • Make available to parishioners a CCRB small group study series at St. Emile entitled “A Christian’s Guide to Defending Life in the Womb”. ST. EMILE MEN’S FAITH SHARING GROUP Submitted by Gilbert Vielfaure

Mission: To hearten and empower men to grow in their relationship with Christ, family, Church, and community by living their Catholic faith in everyday life

Vision: Every Catholic man alive and vibrant in his faith

The St. Émile men’s faith sharing group continued to meet once a week until the spring / early summer of 2020. On average about eight men attended the meetings that offered its participants an opportunity to share about faith in a confidential and honest setting. We saw many men open up about their personal challenges and blessings which inspired those present to share as well. We feel the meetings helped foster healing and growth while finding strength through the fellowship provided.

During the summer of 2020 the faith sharing group’s core team had meetings with the core team from the parish of Holy Cross to discuss the possibility of a collaborative effort starting in the Fall of 2020. It was agreed that both groups would present the program “That Man is You” based out of the U.S.A. And so, in September of 2020 both groups began to offer the TMIY program in their respective parishes. About 140 men registered to attend the meetings being offered at both parishes. Unfortunately, following the initial first few meetings, Covid restrictions brought about severe constraints that ended the Holy Cross meetings altogether and eventually forced the St. Émile group to migrate to a virtual meeting program with reduced numbers. In March of 2020 the men from both groups were invited to participate in an act of consecration to St. Joseph, about 20 men participated. We are prayerfully discerning what to undertake for the Fall of 2021.

MINISTRY OF ALTAR SERVERS (New) Chairperson: Guido Faralli

Altar servers are lay assistants to a member of the clergy during a Christian Liturgy by attending to supporting tasks at the altar such as retrieving and carrying, ringing the altar bell, helps bring up the gifts, among other things.

MINISTRY OF CARE (formerly Communion to the Sick and Shut-Ins) Submitted by Geraldine Wilkinson

This ministry is based on identifying and meeting the needs of the sick, shut-ins, and the lonely of our parish. Our aim is to bring the Eucharist, prayer, loving care, and joy into their lives by sharing our Faith

Members of our Ministry: Chairperson: Geraldine Wilkinson Fred Fillion Gilbert Dupuis Sylvester Oyamienlen Christine Nnadi Laura Dacquay Mary-Louise Regan

We are still unable to visit the Meadowood Nursing and private homes due to "Covid" which is quite sad.

Unfortunately four of our residents at the nursing home passed away in 2020 (not from Covid) but various health issues.

I keep in touch with our shut-ins in the private homes and they always ask me when are you coming to visit with us I tell them when it's safe to do so.

Ongoing Projects: • Continue to invite new members • Train new members to the ministry • Ensure that members are aware of the protocols for safety and confidentiality and assist them in providing the necessary documents.

MUSIC MINISTRY April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 Written by Meycee Kalaw-Crevier

Introduction The Music Ministry consists of parishioners who wish to enhance each Mass using their various musical talents. All elements of the Mass, including music, form a complete and organic harmony, clearly expressive of the unity of the body of Christ (The Church). The Music Ministry fosters devotion by leading the congregation in Hymns, praise and worship further illustrating the beauty of the Mass and the holiness of the mysteries being celebrated.

Accomplishments ● Provide ongoing musical support for various services (Mondays to Saturdays 9:30 a.m., Saturday 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m., Sunday 11 a.m., Sunday 3 p.m.) ● Online platform (Google Sheets) for volunteer registration/scheduling ● Provide musical support for the special masses (i.e. Christ the King, Christmas, New Year, Holy Week) ● Consistent reporting of all music in ONE LICENSE and other platforms

Ongoing Projects/Activities ● Liaise with all volunteers to ensure that all of their requirements are met. ● Continue to build and improve our ministry to better serve the parish through: o Liaise with the Parish Priest to ensure music and volunteers are provided for all parish activities as needed. o Attend PPC Meetings and update the Parish/Parishioners on all Music Ministry activities.

Challenges: ● Active participation and commitment of parishioners as music volunteers ● Ongoing compliance with evolving guidelines from provincial government, archdiocese, and parish

Future Plans: ● Continue active membership recruitment ● Continue the development of mass music leaders

Our sincerest gratitude to all of our volunteers (musicians, singers, and technical experts)!

Thank you very much for making St. Emile a better parish through your commitment to Music Ministry especially during these unprecedented times.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION MINISTRY (Catechism) Submitted by: Rachel Vielfaure (Catechism Coordinator)

The catechism program at St. Emile parish ran from September 13 to April 18. We had 27 participants in groups of grade 1 & 2, grade 3 & 4, grade 5 & 6 and grade 7 & 8. We started out with regular classes but had to present an online version from November 11 until February 14. Regular classes at the parish resumed on February 21 with a very smooth transition from the online classes. We ended the program a little earlier than usual due to the Covid restrictions, but we will be working at extending the program next year since parents and children appreciate having these faith sessions. We had a good participation of the teachers. Nine were present throughout the year as either the primary teachers and/or helpers.

Our goal is to teach the catholic faith to the children and help them live out their faith. Catechism also prepares them for the sacraments which are such a gift to them when they reach the time to receive them. This year, because of the restrictions, and because families have missed a good part of Mass attendance, we decided to offer an online family catechism. This email was sent to the families every week on Thursdays with the readings, the gospel, a reflection, a video, the saint of the week and a closing prayer to share with their family. The response was very positive. We will certainly try to offer this again next year.

SACRISTY MINISTRY Submitted by Tina Eruja

Members: Tina Eruja (Chairperson), Asuncion Telaquen, Nora Kalaw, Myrna Mah, Nelly Trinidad, Apollo Kalaw, Christy Nnadi, Pablito Lacebal, and Evelyn Lacebal

The Sacristan arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other items that are necessary for the celebration of Mass.

Activities: • I officially became Chairperson of the Sacristy Ministry in October 2018. • The church and chapel sacristies have since undergoing transformation with the support of members mentioned above. • The chapel has since undergone a smoother coordination in terms of lectors, servers and prayer leaders, with the introduction of a weekly schedule. • Members ensures the church and chapel are ready for daily and weekly masses • Members change linens for the different liturgical season • Members wash and iron vestments, purificators, and corporal towels. • Sacristy is cleaned by members of the sacristy ministry.

Work in progress: • With the introduction of a weekly schedule, the Chapel has undergone a smoother coordination in term of Lectors, Servers and Prayer leaders, with the introduction of a weekly schedule and daily morning prayers. Mass is more organized with less movements and interference by attendees. This couldn’t have been possible without the help of our Pastor and PPC Chair. • Ensuring that the church and Chapel is ready for Mass on a daily and weekly basis • Changing of the Linens for the different Liturgical season as when deemed for change. • Washing and ironing vestments, purificators, corporal towels. • The cleaning of the Chapel and Church is done weekly by scheduled volunteers whilst the inside of Sacristy is done by members. • Father’s and the altar boys' vestments are washed when needed by a member • The church sacristy is better organized with weekly cleaning and re-organizing • Preparation for the Easter season has all been put in place. • We are still endeavoring to get our Sacristies to where it is supposed to be before Covid. I really want to thank members for understanding our work schedule whenever they are called upon. • Recruitment of new members is through the bulletin and word of mouth. • With new members, a schedule will be put in place for Masses at Knights Villa, River Park garden, Lions Manor and Funeral services.

A heartfelt "Thank You" to members for their dedication and hard work

Report update since Covid:

The church has witnessed a new way of worship since the pandemic. The Sacristy was also affected by this but the church of God has never seized to operate. The Archdiocese set guidelines that the church must adhere to church in accordance with the provincial regulations. • The Sacristy operated on a schedule between Tina, Nelly, and Asuncion as Mass recording could only accommodate 5 members. • The cleaning of vestment and the sacristy was done by Tina Eruja. • The purificators and Corporal was and still is washed by Christy Nnadi. • Parishioners who were present at daily Mass have been taking turns to read with no concerns.

We pray that the pandemic be over, so that we can resume normal Mass and reunite with our friends and family.

YOUTH MINISTRY Submitted by: Katrie Vielfaure

Committee Members: Katrie Vielfaure (Coordinator) Fr. Gerry Sembrano. Gilbert & Rachel Vielfaure Remi & Diane Morissette

The St. Emile youth ministry continued to be guided by the youth ministry committee in 2020. In the spring/summer of 2020 the committee confirmed the hiring of a part time youth ministry coordinator, Katrie Vielfaure, who began her role with the youth in the fall of 2020. Working with her core team, she has been busy organizing youth evenings for grades 6 to 8 while assisting in presenting gatherings for grades 9 to 12 as well. These youth evenings have not only helped the youth deepen their relationship with Christ but have also provided formative opportunities for the leaders involved. The grades 6 to 8 group had 4 Zoom meetings online during the months of November to February, discussing faith, playing games, hosting small group discussions and having prayer times. Since March, middle school and high school youth nights have been in person, permitting fellowship to take place face-to-face.

In both groups four core team members helped organize and lead the gatherings. Attendance at the meetings has been between 8 to 25 youth. Though some activities had to be modified due to the ongoing pandemic, the faith of all involved has only deepened. The St. Emile Youth ministry is not only eager but ready to take on the necessary challenges in order to ensure the complete well-being of the youth in our parish.

We have not had any virtual meetings because many of our older members are not comfortable with the use of computers.

Thank you to all the volunteers for without them, this would not be possible. Thank you also to parishioners for all the donations and to Knights of Columbus for their continued support.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Submitted by: Don Petsche, Grand Knight St. Emile Council 8221

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. It was founded by Fr. Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut in 1880. Today, there are over 2 million members in 17 countries making up 15,900 councils.

Our St. Emile Knights of Columbus council #8221 now have 122 members. The majority are St. Emile parishioners who meet every 2nd Wednesday at St. Emile Parish.

This past year has indeed been a very challenging year due to COVID and that has limited the number of events and get-togethers that we have been able to make or attend and many had to be cancelled. For instance, the following activities were cancelled: • The annual Basketball Free throw tournament, in March 2020 and again in March 2021. • In person activities, for the Festival du Voyageur, a major fundraiser for our council. • Planned Pro-Life walk last March and again this March.

St. Emile Parish Annual General Meeting 2021

• A Planned Pro-Life walk, sponsored by our council for last September. However, despite the challenges, we continued and rather than meeting in person, all but one of our council meetings were held via online tools such as Microsoft Teams. However, without a lot of fundraising activities, without major group activities and with a lot of “Social Distancing” awareness, our council continued to be busy: 1) As part of the Knights of Columbus “Leave No Neighbour behind” program we: a. Organized and took part in “Wellness” phoning committees, 3 times during the 20/21 Columbian year, once for our Brothers and twice for our St. Emile Parishioners; b. We organized three Food drives, one within the council and two within local apartment complexes, all supporting Local Food Banks, for both non-perishable foods and financial donations; c. Increased our financial support, in 2020, for local charities due to COVID; and d. Participated in the Christmas Float “Keep Christ In Christmas” program on Boxing Day. 2) In support of our Parish and School we: a. Initiated a Grade 8 Scholarship award program for graduating Grade 8 students at St. Emile, who are planning on attending one of the 4 Catholic High Schools here in Winnipeg; b. Established a “Video Recording” team to record masses and events at St. Emile for all to view through the Internet; c. Held a Silver Rose Prayer Service in St. Emile church; d. Helping our Parish through COVID restricted Lenten activities – Stations of the Cross and Reconciliation evening; and e. Although we are limited in what we can do, we continue to be involved in Parish activities such as lectors, maintenance programs, renovations projects, finance, and being members of the PPC.

St. Emile Knights of Columbus continue to be the driving force in our parish through volunteering just over 4,200 hours and raising over $8,600.00 for its charities.

This pandemic really affects our normal life but our service, the intention and commitments to our neighbors should stay the same. As per handbook passage says, “Suffering is always a grace. When it is not to bestow healing, it is to confer power. It is never merely a punishment for sin.” “Understand”, says St. Augustine, “that the affliction of mankind is no penal law, for Suffering is medicinal in its character.”

While our praesidium weekly meeting every Tuesday are still on-hold, we still using the Messenger in our phone weekly and daily virtual prayer meetings and our presidium praying together.

Parish Based Works: 1. Sacristy work. - one member 2. Washing the purificator one member 3. Help/Assist in cleaning and disinfecting the church. -3 members 4. Food bank. -one member 5. Lectors, leading the Rosary before the Mass and leading the divine mercy prayer after the mass. 6. March 2, 2021- Station of the cross (Assigned by Fr. Gerry) 7. Good Friday 2021. - 7 members

Highlights:

Meeting virtually is something very new to most of our members but to continuously keep the communication and relation with our members with the use of the Messenger we were able to hold our prayer every Tuesday. But with the efforts in trying hard with this new means of communication, we are happy to share with you the positive outcome of our Virtual Legion Prayer of our 100% of our praesidia in attendance.

For the next school session, the school is looking at 370 pupils and plans to do the following; 1. Keep and continue to use some spaces in the church 2. Rent an outside building down the road for their use.
