Tortricidae 156 References 169 Note 172 Abstract: This paper deals with all Lepidoptera, excluding the non-crambine Pyralidae, of Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Snares Is. The native resident fauna of these islands consists of 42 species of which 21 (50%) are endemic, in 27 genera, of which 3 (11%) are endemic, in 12 families. The endemic fauna is characterised by brachyptery (66%), body size under 10 mm (72%) and concealed, or strictly ground- dwelling larval life. All species can be related to mainland forms; there is a distinctive pre-Pleistocene element as well as some instances of possible Pleistocene introductions, as suggested by the presence of pairs of species, one member of which is endemic but fully winged. A graph and tables are given showing the composition of the fauna, its distribution, habits, and presumed derivations. Host plants or host niches are discussed. An additional 7 species are considered to be non-resident waifs. The taxonomic part includes keys to families (applicable only to the subantarctic fauna), and to genera and species. -

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Kitching3, Charles Mitter1 1 Department of Entomology, College Park, Maryland, United States of America, 2 Center for Biosystems Research, University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, College Park, Maryland, United States of America, 3 Department of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, London, United Kingdom Abstract Background: The 1400 species of hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) comprise one of most conspicuous and well- studied groups of insects, and provide model systems for diverse biological disciplines. However, a robust phylogenetic framework for the family is currently lacking. Morphology is unable to confidently determine relationships among most groups. As a major step toward understanding relationships of this model group, we have undertaken the first large-scale molecular phylogenetic analysis of hawkmoths representing all subfamilies, tribes and subtribes. Methodology/Principal Findings: The data set consisted of 131 sphingid species and 6793 bp of sequence from five protein-coding nuclear genes. Maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses provided strong support for more than two- thirds of all nodes, including strong signal for or against nearly all of the fifteen current subfamily, tribal and sub-tribal groupings. Monophyly was strongly supported for some of these, including Macroglossinae, Sphinginae, Acherontiini, Ambulycini, Philampelini, Choerocampina, and Hemarina. Other groupings proved para- or polyphyletic, and will need significant redefinition; these include Smerinthinae, Smerinthini, Sphingini, Sphingulini, Dilophonotini, Dilophonotina, Macroglossini, and Macroglossina. The basal divergence, strongly supported, is between Macroglossinae and Smerinthinae+Sphinginae. All genes contribute significantly to the signal from the combined data set, and there is little conflict between genes. -

Box 40, Lincoln, New Zealand [email protected] Abstract Landcare Research, formerly Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), has worked on the biological control of weeds for the past 90 years. During this time 63 species of insects have been imported into our containment facility for re-phasing, host testing, pathogen screening and rearing before being released into the New Zealand environment. Some species were imported and not released for various reasons. These included, inherent diseases, population collapse in containment, used for experiments only, regulations allowing host testing only. Table 1 (See the URL below) shows which species have been assessed for establishment, which species were tested for diseases and those which tested positive. Additionally, the table shows which importations were approved for release, when and by which authority, and which importations were never released. Families of insects introduced into our quarantine facility: Acari = 2, Chrysomelidae = 16, Curculionidae = 9, Tephritidae = 5, Tenthredinidae = 2, Pyrallidae = 3, Oecophoridae = 3, Tortricidae = 3, Nymphalidae = 2, Scythrididae = 2, Tingidae = 2, Cerambycidae=1, Psyllidae = 1, Agromyzidae = 1, Syrphidae = 2, Cecidimyiidae = 2, Bruchidae = 1, Eupterotidae=1, Crambidae =1, Cynipidae =1, Pteriophoridae =2, Arctiidae =1, Cosmopterigidae =1 Parts of the plant targeted for attack by these potential biological control agents were: stems, 15; leaves, 30; roots, eight; and flowers, one. Nine insect species were released to attack seeds. Six seed-feeding agents, three root feeders, one stem feeder and four foliage feeders, were shown to have an impact on the target plant either in the laboratory or in the field. -

During a trip in December 2003 and January 2004 the author collected on these two islands at various places. In the last years KISHIDA (1992a, 1992b, 1993, 1995, 2000a, 2000b, 2001 & 2003) worked very intensively with Agaristinae and also with the genus Mimeusemia BUTLER, 1875. Some years earlier KIRIAKOFF (1977) published a systematic monography of the Palaearctic and Oriental Agaristinae. Additionally RABENSTEIN & SPEIDEL (1995) reported some details of the life history and biology of some Agaristinae species.
