By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games.

  • 2018 Annual Report – January 27, 2019
The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea 2018 Annual Report January 27, 2019 From the Rector I am now halfway through my eighth year serving as Rector of this amazing parish. We continue to grow spiritually and more fully live into the mission to which God calls us: to experience the clear and strong presence of God and to understand and spread Christ’s teachings through collective worship, learning, and service. In 2018 we came to look at this mission through a couple of new lenses. First, we continued a journey of learning about and experiencing the presence of God through Celtic Christianity—that tradition that grew in Ireland and through Scotland, England, and Wales over 1,000 years ago. This Celtic framework structured my sabbatical time last summer. Eli and I continue to feel such a deep sense of connection to God, one another, and our parish family as a result of our sabbatical time. Our summer in the British Isles provided a time of deep rest, profound spiritual renewal, tremendous learning, sweet time just to reconnect, and many opportunities to forge new friendships. Moreover, this Celtic dimension to our life will continue to grow and to shape us through the incorporation of prayers, through using Celtic liturgies at our Tuesday and Wednesday Eucharists, and through informing the other important lens we began to consider in 2018: Evangelism. At last year’s Annual Meeting I said that if we just got more used to even talking about Evangelism, if we just got to the point of being comfortable with our discomfort with the idea of Evangelism, we will have made great progress.

  • Amazing Isn't Good Enough
ABSTRACT: This thesis sets out to identify the workings of media franchising by analysing the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man as a case study. By questioning the change in representation of Spider-Man in this animated series and comparing it to other depictions of Spider- Man in popular culture, this thesis shows that industrial goals and relations are at the heart of differences in representation. By conducting both a textual analysis as an industrial analysis, this thesis combines the findings from those analyses to find that the reimagination of the character Spider-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man is founded on a desire to base the character on source material, gain value from the larger Marvel Universe and to address a younger audience. These industrial goals are conflicting and challenge the historical and cultural functionalities of the superhero Spider-Man. This thesis confirms the value of media franchising, as focussing on industrial relations contributes to our understanding of the production of culture.
