Livelihood Adaptation to Climate Change Project (BGD/01/004/01/99) SITUATION ASSESSMENT REPORT IN S-W COASTAL REGION OF BANGLADESH (JUNE, 2009) Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Acknowledgements The present study on livelihoods adaptation was conducted under the project Livelihood Adaptation to Climate Change, project phase-II (LACC-II), a sub-component of the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP), funded by UNDP, EU and DFID which is being implemented by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) with technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UN. The Project Management Unit is especially thankful to Dr Stephan Baas, Lead Technical Advisor (Environment, Climate Change and Bioenergy Division (NRC), FAO, Rome) and Dr Ramasamy Selvaraju, Environment Officer (NRC Division, FAO, Rome) for their overall technical guidance and highly proactive initiatives. The final document and the development of the project outputs are direct results of their valuable insights received on a regular basis. The inputs in the form of valuable information provided by Field Officers (Monitoring) of four coastal Upazilas proved very useful in compiling the report. The reports of the upazilas are very informative and well presented. In the course of the study, the discussions with a number of DAE officials at central and field level were found insightful. In devising the fieldwork the useful contributions from the DAE field offices in four study upazilas and in district offices of Khulna and Pirojpur was significant. The cooperation with the responsible SAAOs in four upazilas was also highly useful. The finalization of the study report has benefited from the valuable inputs, comments and suggestions received from various agencies such as DAE, Climate Change Cell, SRDI (Central and Regional offices), and others. -

The present study tries to examine the role of Reang Home gardens in North Tripura district of Tripura. A total of 38 Home gardens in 4 hamlet or pada were randomly selected for the study. Total plant inventory and interview method were used to collect data. In Reang Home gardens at North Tripura District overall 148 species under 130 genera belonging to 55 families have been inventoried. Leguminosae and Poaceae were the most dominant families. Forty percent of the Reang Home garden plants were found to harbour edible plant species. (food, Fruits, vegetable, pulses, spices), 22% medicinal, 18% ornamental, 4% timber, 3% fine wood and other categories remain little over 3%. Reang Home garden shows a good diversity with multiple uses. Most Reang peoples rely on folk health care traditions. Domestication of wild plants for food, medicine and other purposes are an important activity. The Genus Amorphophallus (Titan Arums) Origin, Habit and General Information The genus Amorphophallus is well known for the famous Amorphophallus titanum , commonly known as "Titan Arum". The Titan Arum holds the plant world record for an unbranched single inflorescence. The infloresence eventually may reach up to three meters and more in height. Besides this oustanding species more than 200 Amorphophallus species have been described - and each year some more new findings are published. A more or less complete list of all validly described Amorphophallus species and many photos are available from the website of the International Aroid Society (http://www.aroid.org) . Few species are found in Africa (e.g. Amorphophallus abyssinicus , from West to East Africa), Australia (represented by a single species only, namely Amorphophallus galbra , occuring in Queensland, North Australia and Papua New Guinea), and Polynesia respectively. Intensive and excessive use of synthetic insecticides cause several deleterious effects to human, beneficial organisms as well as the environment. Therefore, an alternative control strategy of BPH which is environmentally friendly and safer than the synthetic insecticides should be developed, such as botanical insecticides.This research sought to study mortality, feeding inhibition, and oviposition deterrent activities of Piper retrofractum, P. crocatum, Chromolaema odorata, Tagetes erecta, Tithonia diversifolia and Ageratum conyzoides extracts against BPH. Probit analysis was used to estimate LC50 and LC95 values of the extracts. P. retrofractrum extract exhibited highest mortality compared to the other extracts with LC95 values of 0.71%, followed by T. erecta 3.28%. The extract of P. retrofractum also indicated the highest feeding inhibition of 86.40% at LC75 value, which gradually decreased on T. erecta, T. diversifolia, P. crocatum, A. -

Bioactivity of plants as medicinal ingredients is related to secondary metabolites compounds. The writing of this article is based on a literature review of various scientific journals, books and other research results then synthesized so as to obtain comprehensive information about the benefits and bioactivity of PR. Wild type of PR is found in Asia especially Thailand, Indo-China, Malaysia, Maluku. The ethnics uses the PR as traditional medicine to cure of digestive disorders, blood circulation, asthma, influenza, rheumatism, and hypertension. The PR has activities as anti-cancer, anti-obesity, anti- diabetes mellitus, anti-oxidants and aphrodisiac. The active compounds of PB is alkaloids, especially piperine, piperlongumine and pipelartine. The potential of PB as aphrodisiac needs to be investigated further to minimize toxicity and fixed dose. INTRODUCTION Java chili or Piper retrofractum (PR) is one type of PR fruit has a "hot" taste so that in traditional spice used as a spice in cooking and traditional medicine it is used to treat digestive disorders, improve medicine. The naming of Java chili (PB) is thought to blood circulation, asthma, influenza, hypertension, be related to the shape of the fruit which is similar to antiflatulent (Chaveerach et al 2006), intestinal chilli (Capsicum sp.) And is found in the forests of disorders, accelerate placental puputage, bleeding, Java, even though the taxonomy is very much different.
