MİRZA TAKİ FIÂN (EMiR KEBiR) VE REFORMLARI (1848 - 1851) GÖKHAN BOLAT* GİRİŞ Yalun dönem İran tarihinde Batı tarzı reform hareketleri Türk kö- kenli Kaçar Hanedanı döneminde (1796-1925) başlamıştır. İran'daki re- form süreci tıpkı Osmanlı Devleti'nde olduğu gibi önceleri askeri re- formlar şeklinde başlamış', daha sonra diğer alanlara yayılmışur. 19. yüzyıl bu açıdan hem Osmanlı Devleti hem de İran'da çeşitli reform ha- reketlerinin görüldüğü bir dönem olmuştur. Chapter 17 Leaving Islam for Christianity: Asylum Seeker Converts Nora Stene 1 Introduction This chapter presents a case study from Norway, and explores why and how some asylum seekers leave one religion for another: more specifically Islam for Christianity. The context of their conversion is migration and the difficult situ- ation of asylum seekers. The chapter also highlights perspectives and method- ologies especially relevant to this field of study. There are no available official statistics on the number of asylum seeker converts in Norway. However, the Norwegian Immigration Appeals Board (une) estimates that between 2001 and 2015 approximately 950 individuals converted from Islam to Christianity – listing fear of religious persecution as support for their asylum appeals. The great majority of them were from Iran or Afghanistan, but une data has registered smaller numbers of converts from a total of 23 different countries (details in Stene 2016, personal communication une 2017). It should be noted that in order to be considered a convert by the une there must be an announcement of faith, baptism, and attachment to a local Christian congregation (une 2016). The actual number of converts may also be higher than the figure given above, as asylum seekers may not mention conversion in their applications –or appeals. The une has observed that conversions/baptisms usually take place during the appeal-process, after an initial asylum application has been rejected. In this period a number of asylum seekers have contact with Christian congregations (une 2016). Clearly critical to certain kinds of active proselytisation among asylum seekers, the une, human rights- and church umbrella-organisations have issued guidelines to protect asylum seekers from what has been termed “unwanted attention” from missionaries (details in Stene 2016:207). -

Through its foreign minister, Wakil Ahmad Mutawakel, the Afghan government stated, "the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has decided to accord immediate recognition to the government of an independent Chech- nya."' God created human perfectly and blessed him with his own soul. All the angels prostrated to show their respect and God assigned human being to represent Him on Earth. Everything on Earth and skies serve to him and finally he is responsible for building up the world and protecting it. Animals are also the responsibility of human beings. Prophet Muhammed suggested treating animals gently and respecting their rights, which proves that animals are under the protection of human beings according to Islamic traditions. The necessity of protecting the animals and plants to ensure the sustainability of natural balance and the idea that animal health and welfare are inseparable have an important place in Islamicthought. Accordingly, examination of animals as a requirement of above mentioned thoughts –but not only for the purpose of benefitting from them but also learning more about their nature in order to carry out human being’s responsibility as perfectly as possible – has been considered essential in Islamic civilizations and animal health has been given special attention throughout Islamic history. In Islam countries, many studies were conducted and books were written about veterinary medicine between 9th and 15th century. Under the light of this knowledge, the current study aims at presenting information about veterinaries who lived in Islam World during the Middle Age and their scientific works. -

This paper aims at unveiling some of the mysteries covering the issue of so-called “Islamic fundamentalism” in Chechnya. A comparison of the native Sufi branch of Islam and the imported Wahhaby ideology is made, in order to discover the contradictions and the conflicts that the spreading of the latter inflicted in the Chechen society. Furthermore, the paper investigates the main challenges President Aslan Maskhadov was facing at the beginning of his mandate, and the way he managed to cope with them. The paper does not attempt to cover all the aspects of the Chechen problem; nevertheless, a quick enumeration of other factors influencing the developments in Chechnya in the past three years is made. 1 Research assistant Danish Institute of International Affairs (DUPI) 1 1. Introduction To address the issues of stability in North Caucasus in general and in Chechnya in particular is a difficult task. The factors that have contributed to the start of the first and of the second armed conflicts in Chechnya are indeed many. History, politics, economy, traditions, religion, all of them contributed to a certain extent to the launch of what began as an anti-terrorist operation and became a full scale armed conflict. The narrow framework of this presentation does not allow for an exhaustive analysis of the Russian- Chechen relations and of the permanent tensions that existed there during the known history of that part of North Caucasus. -
Intersecting Identities: Cultural and Traditional Allegiance in Portrait of an Emir
INTERSECTING IDENTITIES: CULTURAL AND TRADITIONAL ALLEGIANCE IN PORTRAIT OF AN EMIR Ariana Panbechi In Iranian history, the period between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries can be best described as an era of monumental change. Transformations in economics, technology, military administration, and the arts reverberated across the Persian Empire and were further developed by the Qajar dynasty, which was quick to embrace the technological and industrial innovations of modernism. 1 However, the Qajars were also strongly devoted to tradition, and utilized customary Persian motifs and themes to craft an imperial identity that solidified their position as the successors to the Persian imperial lineage.2 This desire to align with the past manifested in the visual arts, namely in large-scale royal portraiture of the Qajar monarchy and ruling elite. Executed in 1855, Portrait of an Emir (Fig. 1) is a depiction of an aristocrat that represents the Qajar devotion to reviving traditional imagery through art in an attempt to craft a nationalist identity. The work portrays a Qajar nobleman dressed in lavish robes and seated on a two-tone carpet within a palatial setting. The subject is identified as Emir Qasem Khan in the inscription that appears to the left of his head.3 Figure 1. Attributed to Afrasiyab, Portrait of an Emir, 1855. Oil on cotton, 59 x 37 in. In this paper, I argue that Emir Qasem Khan’s portrait, as a pictorial representation of how he presented himself during his lifetime, is a visualization of the different entities, ideas, and traditions that informed his carefully crafted identity as a member of the Qajar court. -
