"I am a camera, with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking. Someday, all this will have to be developed, carefully printed, fixed." - from the original novel

I chose to direct the Sam Mendes/Masteroff 1998 version of Caba ret partly due to his conceptual design, but also because of his clear rationale for telling this story; again. Mendes clearly parallels 1930's Germany to the contemporary problems in our country to- · day, "It's only compelling, shocking, only powerful because we can see today at least some of what Cliff could see back then." Cliff mirrors the changing face of America - back in 1966 and today. He realizes that horrible things are happening in the world and he, like many young people today, are waking up, realizing that they have a responsibility to speak up and register their dissatisfaction.

Cabaret continues to have great resonance. People today are des perate for change, for a quick fix, for salvation from the things they perceive as deadly to their nation and to their way of life. Doing Cabaret today and realizing the clear political and social parallels is more frightening than ever. I have spent much time working with the actors through an educational process that clearly tells the story of these "outsiders" and all the people at the Kit Kat Klub. We spent much time paralleling their personal lives and situations to those of the Cabaret characters. The times may have changed, but the social and political issues continue to shape our world. Mendes' stunning vision for this contemporary version takes us through political, religious and social issues that we generally fear talking about publicly. He maintains the "in your face" attitude that was first directed by Hal Prince in 1966.

I'd like to thank Ginger Morris and Michael McKelvey for bringing back home to Austin, Texas. My experience with these wonderfu I actors and production team has been nothing short of professional.

Inspired by Federico Fellini's film Nights of Cabiria, a vehicle for Fellini's bride Giulietta Masina, created to showcase the talents of his wife Gwen Verdon. Both actresses were nominated for Best Actress Awards. Masina won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival, but Verdon lost the Tony to Angela Lansbury for .

The first collaboration between composer and lyricist Dorothy Fields, Sweet Charity, first opened on Broadway in 1966. also reunited with the team of Coleman and Fosse after having written the book for Little Me in 1962.

Later in 1969 Bob Fosse made his debut as a film director with a screen adaptation of Sweet Charity staring Shirley Mac Laine as Charity and the original Broadway actor John McMartin as Oscar Lindquist. Since the 1960s, Sweet Charity has been twice revived on stage, in 1986 starring Debbie Allen and in 2005 featuring Christina Applegate.

Set in New York City in the 1960s, the musical is, first of all, a commentary on that turbulent decade of social and cultural trans formation, particularly as it affected young women. The plot moves the audience through a variety of social milieus: the popular dance halls, the middle class white collar world, the glamorous Hollywood scene, and even the radical hippie underground. But although the context is historical, Sweet Charity explores the timeless themes of love, loss, and the struggle for independence in ways that audi ences from every generation continue to relate to.

Despite the top hats, canes, slinky costumes, and elaborate chore ography, Sweet Charity is, in essence, an enduring and endearing story about a young woman's search for love.
