Uddhava's Transcendental Message - Part 1

Date: 2013-11-27 Author: Manohar Suvarna

Hare Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

One of the wonderful, inspiring and soul touching pastimes in Srimad Bhagavatam is Uddhava's transcendental experience in Vrindavana while performing service as Lord's messenger. We all need to take bath in this holy stream of 'śudh bhāva' to purify our contaminated thoughts, illusion and huge false ego as devotee of Lord Krishna.

After killing , Lord Krishna stayed in Mathura for sometime with his father and mother Devaki to give them pleasure who had suffered heavily in the hands of cruel King Kamsa. Once, Lord Krishna informed His dear most friend Uddhava to go to Vraja and give pleasure to His parents Nanda Maharaj and Mother Yashoda and to give some relief to , who were suffering in separation from Him. This is because Lord felt pain as He promised them that He would return. Bhagavatam says that supremely intelligent Uddhava was the best counsellor of the Vrshni dynasty, a beloved friend of Lord Sri Krishna and a direct disciple of Brhaspati. In the third Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, Lord Himself says 'noddhavo 'ṇv api man-nyunaḥ' - "Uddhava is not even slightly different from Me." Resembling Krishna so much, Uddhava was the perfect person to carry out the Lord's mission in Vrindavana. Furthermore, as per Hari Vamsa, Uddhava is cousin brother of Lord Krishna.

1. Material happiness is insignificant when it comes to love for Lord: Lord Krishna wished to send Uddhava to Vrindavana for multiple reasons. One of the reasons is to show to the whole universe the "standard of devotion service" that gopis set for future yugas to remember and follow. Indeed, the love the cowherd men and gopis felt for Krishna was far beyond anything the Lord's other devotees had ever experienced, and by hearing about that love, all the Lord's devotees would increase their faith and devotion. Before sending Uddhava, Lord Krishna fondly remembers the gopis. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.46.4 while glorifying the pure love of the gopis, Lord says:

tā man-manaskā mat-prāṇā mat-arthe tyakta-daihikāḥ mām eva dayitaṁ preṣṭham ātmānaṁ manasā gatāḥ ye tyakta-loka-dharmāś ca mad-arthe tān bibharmy aham

The minds of those gopis are always absorbed in Me, and their very lives are ever devoted to Me. For My sake they have abandoned everything related to their bodies, renouncing ordinary happiness in this life, as well as religious duties necessary for such happiness in the next life. I alone am their dearmost beloved and, indeed, their very Self. I personally sustain such devotees, who for My sake give up all worldly duties.

Lord is sad that gopis are suffering from the anxiety of separation and waiting for Him as He promised to return to Vrindavana. Krishna wanted to pacify them who are struggling to live some or the other. Uddhava having respectfully accepted His master's message took the chariot and went to Nanda Gokula. He reached Gokula in the evening at a time when cows and animals were returning home.

Krishna willing, we shall continue to learn more about Uddhava's transcendental message in the subsequent offerings.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the topic Uddhava's Transcendental Message wherein we saw how Lord Krishna after going to Mathura sent Uddhava as messenger to to pacify His parents and gopis. In previous offering we saw how Lord was pleased with gopis as they considered material happiness as insignificant compared to love for Lord. Today we will see the experiences of Uddhava with Nanda Maharaj and Mother Yashoda.

2. Living entity is naturally attracted towards Lord: As Uddhava entered Gokula, he could see and feel the divine current in the place where Lord lived. Gokula appeared full of Lord’s special energy with cows, bulls, calves following one another, sound of milking of the cows, flute playing, singing of all auspiciousness deeds of Krishna by cowherd men and women. Cowherd homes appeared most charming with paraphernalia for worship of cows, brahmanas, unexpected guests, and demigods. This shows that Lord’s heart is in places where innocent, simple and humble devotees like Vrajavasi live and where cows, and brahmanas are worshipped and for whom remembrance of Krishna is indispensable part of daily life.

At Nanda Maharaja’s home, Uddhava was received with warm welcome and was worshipped as non-different from Lord Vaasudeva. Nanda Maharaja knows that whoever is dear to Krishna like Uddhava is no different from Krishna Himself and that is the reason Nanda Maharaj addresses Uddhava as, "O most fortunate Uddhava." Enquiries eagerly made by Nanda Maharaj about Lord Krishna and then remembering Lord’s various pastimes in Gokula shows the intensity of love for Lord and pain of separation from Lord.

Nanda Maharaj remembers how Lord saved them from forest fire, wind, rain, bull demon, serpent demon, and how Lord killed Pralamba, Denuka, Arista, Tranavarta and Baka. By remembering Lord’s wonderful deeds, His smiles and His words, one forgets all material engagements. He says that mind get fully absorbed in Krishna when he visits places where Krishna enjoyed such as rivers, forests, and hills. Bhagavatam verse (10.46.27) says, "saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtya" which means intensely and repeatedly remembering Krishna again and again, Nanda Maharaja, his mind completely attached to the Lord, felt extreme anxiety and fell silent, overcome by the strength of his love.

From the above, it is noted that until this point of time, Nanda Maharaj does not know that Krishna is Supreme Personality of God Head. Yet his unparallel love towards Lord is nothing but mercy and potency of Lord. One needs to understand that devotional service of any living being is the mercy and will of Lord not an accident. In this context, let us purify ourselves by remembering Mucukunda’s prayer to Lord Krishna in Srimad Bhagavatam 10.51.53,

bhavāpavargo bhramato yadā bhavej janasya tarhy acyuta sat-samāgamaḥ sat-saṅgamo yarhi tadaiva sad-gatau parāvareśe tvayi jāyate matiḥ

When the material life of a wandering soul has ceased, O Acyuta, he may attain the association of Your devotees. And when he associates with them, there awakens in him devotion unto You, who are the goal of the devotees and the Lord of all causes and their effects.

One important point we need to remember over here is that it is Krishna’s association that transforms fallible living being into a devotee. It is the magnetic touch. Iron is naturally attracted towards magnet. We are reminded of one of the pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna in Srimad Bhagavatam 10th Canto, Chapter 13. Lord steals cowherd boys and calves. Having understood that it is Brahma’s task, Lord decided to give pleasure to Brahma and mothers of cows and cowherd boys, by expanding himself exactly like missing calves and cowherd boys. In the evening when cowherd boys (expansion of Lord Krishna) went home, mothers got from their seats immediately and embraced their boys, fed them with extreme love and affection, gave them oil bath and sandal wood pulp, decorated them with ornaments, chanted protective mantras. On the other side, cows began licking calves (expansion of Krishna) body again and again and profusely feeding them with milk flowing from their milk bags. All this is because living being is part and parcel of Krishna and are naturally attracted towards Krishna. The souls of the mother of cowherd boys and that of the cows naturally recognized Super Soul, the Master of the Universe, and enjoyed serving Supreme Lord.

Krishna willing, we shall continue to learn more about Uddhava’s transcendental message in the subsequent offerings.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the topic Uddhava's Transcendental Message. In the previous offerings we saw the below points.

1. Lord is pleased with gopis as they consider material happiness as insignificant compared to love for Lord 2. Living entity is naturally attracted towards Lord.

Today we will see how Uddhava was inspired by inconceivable love of Nanda Maharaja and Mother Yashoda for Lord Sri Krishna.

3. Lord Krishna is everything as everything is dependent on Him: Uddhava was shocked to see the supreme loving attraction of Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda for Lord Krishna. He praised them asmost " praiseworthy persons in entire world" and assured them that Krishna will soon return. Now, Uddhava glorifies Lord Krishna in selected verses. These are worth remembering to purify us. For Krishna no one is dear or superior or inferior yet He is not indifferent to any one. He is free from desire for respect, yet He respects all. He has no mother, no father, no wife, children or other relatives. No one is related to Him, and yet no one is a stranger to Him. Most important glorification is Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 10, chapter 46, verse 43 in which he says,

dṛṣṭaṁ śrutaṁ bhūta-bhavad-bhaviṣyat sthāsnuś cariṣṇur mahad alpakaṁ ca vinācyutād vastu tarāṁ na vācyaṁ sa eva sarvaṁ paramātma-bhūtaḥ

Nothing can be said to exist independent of Lord Acyuta — nothing heard or seen, nothing in the past, present or future, nothing moving or unmoving, great or small. He indeed is everything, for He is the Supreme Soul.

Above verses of Uddhava shatters our false ego. Our very existence in this material world is Lord's mercy. Despite our invincible desires for material enjoyment, our endeavor to lord over the material nature, our hankering for 24 hours happiness and peace, Krishna does not punish us. He is patient, tolerant and forgiving. He offers us unlimited opportunities to reform, yet we enjoy elephant bath.

Bhagavatam says Uddhava glorified Lord Krishna whole night. In the morning, woman of Vraja got up, worshiped household deities and started churning butter. As the ladies of Vraja loudly sang the glories of lotus-eyed Krishna, their songs blended with the sound of their churning, ascended to the sky and dissipated all inauspiciousness in every direction. This is the mercy of pure devotees of the Lord to the fallen souls. They are so much engrossed in singing glories of Krishna that without their knowledge they vanished inauspiciousness in all directions.

When Gopis saw golden chariot in front of Nanda Maharaja's house, thinking that chariot belongs to , Gopis used harsh words against Akrura who has taken their Krishna away from them to Mathura. However, their doubts cleared upon seeing Uddhava who resembled Lord in all respects.

Krishna willing, we shall continue to learn more about Uddhava's transcendental message in the subsequent offerings.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the topic Uddhava's Transcendental Message. In the previous offerings we saw the below points.

1. Lord is pleased with gopis as they consider material happiness as insignificant compared to love for Lord. 2. Living entity is naturally attracted towards Lord. 3. Lord Krishna is everything as everything is dependent on Him.

Today we will see love of gopis for Lord Krishna.

4. Loving Krishna unconditionally without material formalities: Gopis understood that Uddhava is Lord Krishna's messenger. They honored Uddhava with humility, respect and pleasing words. Gopis said it is natural that Krishna sent Uddhava to give pleasure to His parents, as bondage of family is difficult even for sages to break. However, friendship is motivated by personal interest and lasts till purpose is achieved. Such friendship is just like the interest men take in women, or bees in flowers. Prostitutes abandon a penniless man, subjects an incompetent king, students their teacher once they have finished their education, and priests a man who has remunerated them for a sacrifice. Birds abandon a tree when its fruits are gone, guests a house after they have eaten, animals a forest that has burnt down, and a lover the woman he has enjoyed, even though she remains attached to him. Here, gopis are referring to Krishna who left them. One needs to understand that these words of gopis are coming from the deep pain of separation from Krishna whom they loved boundlessly, infinitely, and unconditionally. In the process of lamentation that Krishna is heartless, cheater, and selfish, gopis are engrossed in Lord's pastime. This is the rarest love wherein you suffer to love and love to suffer.

Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9 and 10 from Canto 10, Chapter 47 conveys helplessness of gopis out of pile of emotions for Krishna, "gāyantyaḥ prīya-karmāṇi - singing activities of Lord, rudantyaś ca gata-hriyaḥ" - crying and forgetting all shyness and "tasya saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtya" - intensely remembering again and again in the presence of Uddhava, messenger of Krishna. Who can cry for Krishna without shame but for gopis? No one or no devotee can be compared to gopis. Only gopis can be compared to gopis. They are the highest degree of personification of the verse 10.9 of .

mac-cittā mad-gata-prāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam kathayantaś ca māṁ nityaṁ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca

The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are surrendered to Me, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

Further, we are reminded of pastime of Sri Muni, (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.6) greatest devotee of Lord Sri Krishna, who narrates transcendental experience of his previous life to Vyasadeva. After darshan of Supreme Personality of Godhead in his heart, Narada Muni began chanting holy name and fame of the Lord by repeated recitation, ignoring all formalities of the material world, travelled all over the earth, fully satisfied and humble and unenvious. So love for Lord should be unconditional. One should not be bothered about what others will say, but simply serve the Lord with love in all circumstances.

4. Loving Krishna unconditionally without material formalities.

Today, we will see love of Srimati Radharani for Lord Krishna from the pages of Srimad Bhagavatam.

5. Pain of separation increases love for Lord: One of the gopis (Srimati Radharani), did not speak anything while other gopis were lamenting, crying and sharing their pain with Uddhava. Radharani did not wish to offend Sri Uddhava by complaining about Lord Krishna directly. She, while meditating on her previous association with Krishna, saw a honeybee before her and imagined it to be a messenger sent by her beloved Krishna. Now, Radharani expresses her strong emotions while engrossed in the ocean of ecstasy. Acharyas say, "Srimati Radharani's words were full of pure transcendental knowledge and expressed the ultimate portion of the ."

In the nine verses of Srimad Bhagavatam (10.47.12 through 21), Radharani chastised Krishna indirectly by chastising honeybee. She expressed disrespect, envy, jealousy and pride. She condemned Krishna for mercilessness, duplicity, and unreliability. She accuses Krishna of being a cheater and unworthy of her attachment because of His harshness, lustiness and dishonesty. However, in the end when she did not find honeybee around to hear, she gives up her harshness and humbly acknowledges the greatness of Sri Krishna. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.47.17 Radharani stunningly reveals that Lord Krishna Himself was Lord Ramachandra and Lord Vamanadeva. "So let us give up all friendship with this dark-complexioned boy, even if we can't give up talking about Him". Above words of Radharani shows her helplessness and anxiety. In the end, Radharani enquires Uddhava whether Krishna remembers cowherd boys and gopis, His maidservants.

Now, Uddhava pacifies gopis with suitable words. He praises that gopis are all-successful and are universally worshiped because of dedicating their minds to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vasudeva. Most of all, gopis have established an unexcelled standard of pure devotion for the Lord, Uttamashloka — a standard even the sages can hardly attain. Uddhava's words in Srimad Bhagavatam 10.47.27 is worth remembering

sarvātma-bhāvo ’dhikṛto bhavatīnām adhokṣaje viraheṇa mahā-bhāgā mahān me ’nugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ

You have rightfully claimed the privilege of unalloyed love for the transcendental Lord, O most glorious gopis. Indeed, by exhibiting your love for Krishna in separation from Him, you have shown me great mercy.

Krishna willing, we shall continue to learn more about Uddhava's transcendental message in the subsequent offerings.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances!

4. Loving Krishna unconditionally without material formalities 5. Pain of separation increases love for Lord

Today, we will see the message that Lord Krishna has sent for Gopis.

6. Always be alert and remember Krishna: Now, Uddhava unfolds the transcendental message of Lord Sri Krishna to His dear devotees. Blessed Lord said that gopis are not separated from Him since He is soul of all creation. He creates, sustains and withdraws material elements, senses and modes of nature. He is present in every one's mind, life air and senses. Further, Lord says two significant points over here. Firstly, one should become fully alert and bring the mind under control. Secondly, renunciation, austerity, sense control and truthfulness are ultimate conclusion of all Vedas. This message is not just meant for gopis, instead for everyone who is in devotional path.

We have very good example of Bharata Maharaj. He was son of Rshabhadeva, incarnation of Lord, great devotee of Lord Sri Krishna and emperor of the world. He performed several sacrifices and pleased Lord. Bharata Maharaja was very rigid in executing religious principles and following in the footsteps of his father. He therefore ruled the citizens very successfully. After finishing his kingly duties, he divided his kingdom among his five sons and went to Pulahashrama. There he ate forest vegetables and fruits, and worshiped Lord Vasudeva with everything available. Thus he increased his devotion toward Vasudeva, and he automatically began to realize transcendental bliss.Although Bharata Maharaja was very elevated, he fell down because he was not alert and did not control his mind, due to his attachment to a young deer. Bharata Maharaj thought that it is his prime duty to take care and protect the deer. Although he was able to give up his opulent kingdom, his wife, children, friends and relatives, he became attached to the deer. This pastime shows thatthe more we are elevated in devotional service, the more we need to be alert and control the mind. The process of devotional service should not make one feel that he is the master.

Lord's second point is about the attributes of a devotee.Krishna consciousness is impossible without renunciation, austerity, sense control and truthfulness. These are the four wheels of vehicle called . bhakti Narada Muni, while explaining the ways of devotional service to Maharaja Yudhishtir in Srimad Bhagavatam 7.11.21 says above qualities as, "The symptoms of a brahmana are control of the mind, control of the senses, austerity and penance, cleanliness, satisfaction, forgiveness, simplicity, knowledge, mercy, truthfulness, and complete surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

Lord Krishna finally said in His message to that He stayed far away from Gopis to intensify their mediation so that their minds are totally absorbed in Him, free from all engagement and remember Him always. Lord promised that He will come soon.

4. Loving Krishna unconditionally without material formalities. 5. Pain of separation increases love for Lord. 6. Always be alert and remember Krishna.

Today we will see Uddhava's response for Gopis unalloyed love for Lord Krishna.

7. Uddhava glorifies gopis: Gopis were pleased with message from their dear Krishna. However, this was only for few moments as gopis began lamenting again for Lord Krishna. They asked Uddhava whether Krishna is giving pleasure to city women who worship Him with full affection. Will Krishna be able to come back as He is expert in all kinds of conjugal affairs and is the darling of the city women? Once again gopis leaped to ocean of memories. They intensely remembered Vrindavana forest, lovely with lotus, jasmine, bright moon and enjoyment with Krishna in the circle of rasa dance. Gopis expressed doubt whether Krishna will accept them, after living with city women, the forest dwellers. They said, "Uddhava, how can we forget Him when our hearts have been stolen away by the charming way He walks, His generous smile and playful glances, and His honey like words?" Gopis called out (in Srimad Bhagavatam 10.47.52) "O master, O master of the goddess of fortune, O master of Vraja ! O destroyer of all suffering, Govinda, please lift Your Gokula out of the ocean of distress in which it is drowning!"

Thereafter, gopis worshipped Uddhava as non-different from Krishna. Uddhava remained in Gokula for several months, dispelling the gopis' sorrow by chanting the topics of Lord Krishna's pastimes. Uddhava was extremely pleased with Gopis love for Krishna. Uddhava, out of his profound respect for gopis, sang their glories in Srimad Bhagavatam (verses 10.47.58 through 63)

Let us purify ourselves by remembering glorification of Gopis. Uddhava sang,Among " all persons on earth, these Cowherd women alone have actually perfected their embodied lives, for they have achieved the perfection of unalloyed love for Lord Govinda. Their pure love is hankered after by those who fear material existence, by great sages, and by ourselves as well. For one who has tasted the narrations of the infinite Lord, what is the use of taking birth as a high-class brahmana, or even as Lord Brahma himself? How amazing it is that these simple women who wander about the forest, seemingly spoiled by improper behavior, have achieved the perfection of unalloyed love for Krishna, the Supreme Soul! it Still, is true that the Supreme Lord Himself awards His blessings even to an ignorant worshiper, just as the best medicine works even when taken by a person ignorant of its ingredients."

Krishna willing, we shall continue to learn more about Uddhava’s songs in the subsequent offerings. Thank you very much. Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva, Manohar Suvarna Abu Dhabi. Uddhava's Transcendental Message - Part 8

Date: 2013-12-31 Author: Manohar Suvarna

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is concluding part of the topic Uddhava's Transcendental Message. In the previous offerings we saw the below points.

1. Lord is pleased with gopis as they consider material happiness as insignificant compared to love for Lord. 2. Living entity is naturally attracted towards Lord. 3. Lord Krishna is everything as everything is dependent on Him. 4. Loving Krishna unconditionally without material formalities. 5. Pain of separation increases love for Lord. 6. Always be alert and remember Krishna. 7. Uddhava glorifies gopis.

Today, we will see further glorification of gopis by Uddhava and how Nanda Maharaj bade farewell to Uddhava.

8. Gopis set the standard of devotion: Uddhava is supremely pleased with gopis for their love for Krishna. Intensity of gopis' love is expressed strongly through their pain of separation, fever of separation, ecstasy, envy, anger, lamentation, disbelief, anxiety and cries which touches the heart of Uddhava, most confidential devotee of Lord Krishna. Uddhava further glorifies, "The gopis of Vrindavana have given up the association of their husbands, sons and other family members, who are very difficult to give up, and they have forsaken the path of chastity to take shelter of the lotus feet of Mukunda, Krishna, which one should search for by Vedic knowledge. Oh, let me be fortunate enough to be one of the bushes, creepers or herbs in Vrindavana, because the gopis trample them and bless them with the dust of their lotus feet."

Here, Uddhava's heartfelt and humble surrender to gopis shatters our false ego. Uddhava does not wish to become great devotee of the Lord, but bushes and creepers, which will be trampled, by pure devotees like gopis. Here, we learn a lesson as how to appreciate the devotional service of other devotees rather than envying them. This is the original quality of a pure devotee and confidential friend of Lord Krishna. Sri Uddhava with heart full of emotions says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.47.63

vande nanda-vraja-strīṇāṁ pāda-reṇum abhīkṣṇaśaḥ yāsāṁ hari-kathodgītaṁ punāti bhuvana-trayam

I repeatedly offer my respects to the dust from the feet of the women of Nanda Maharaja's cowherd village. When these gopis loudly chant the glories of Sri Krishna, the vibration purifies the three worlds.

Uddhava took permission from gopis, cowherd men, Mother Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj and mounted his chariot to depart. Nanda Maharaj and cowherd men spoke wonderful and inspiring wish, which every one of us need to ponder over (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.47.66 - 67).

manaso vṛttayo naḥ syuḥ kṛṣṇa pādāmbujāśrayāḥ vāco ’bhidhāyinīr nāmnāṁ kāyas tat-prahvaṇādiṣu karmabhir bhrāmyamāṇānāṁ yatra kvāpīśvarecchayā maṅgalācaritair dānai ratir naḥ kṛṣṇa īśvare

May our mental functions always take shelter of Krishna's lotus feet, may our words always chant His names, and may our bodies always bow down to Him and serve Him.

Wherever we are made to wander about this world by the Supreme Lord's will, in accordance with the reactions to our fruitive work, may our good works and charity always grant us love for Lord Krishna.

With this we conclude this series of offering titled, "Uddhava's Transcendental Message". Lord Krishna sent Uddhava to Vrindavana for multiple reasons. One of the reasons is to show to the whole universe the "standard of devotional service", that gopis set for future yugas to remember and follow. Indeed, the love the cowherd men and gopis felt for Krishna was far beyond anything the Lord's other devotees had ever experienced, and by hearing about that love, all of us can increase our faith and devotion.
