An English translation of an essential companion to The Uddhava Gita: The Final Teaching of Krishna much-loved Hindu scripture, the "Bhagavad Gita". Only written down in the later 9th or early 10th century CE, the " Uddhava Gita " contains the last message of Krishna on the importance of devotion and action according to what is right. To properly understand Krishna's teachings we need both the "Bhagavad Gita" and the " Uddhava Gita ". Although the underlying message is the same, the approach of the two texts is different. While the "Bhagavad Gita" is an urgent The Uddhava Gita: The Final Teaching of Krishna delivered on the battlefield, the tone of Krishna's farewell to his friend Uddhava is gentle and more accessible. The " Uddhava Gita The Uddhava Gita: The Final Teaching of Krishna is a mixture of sublime devotional passages and practical advice on how to live and meditate. Swami Ambikananda Saraswati's translation uses language that seeks to make the metaphors of Hinduism accessible to a Western readership, while remaining faithful to the teachings of the original. The style of translation is simple and easy to understand unlike other translations that restricts to polemical renderings that sacrifices versatility and simplicity for precision and academic merit. She explains some finer details of translation in the appendix section which may be found at the end of the book. At the beginning of each chapter, the author briefly introduces the gist of the message contained in that chapter. The fine tradition of Swami Sivananda Saraswati of Divine Life Society that emphasizes the practical application of yoga philosophy in daily life to attain Self-realization is practiced by many of his followers including the author of this book. Uddhava Gita is the farewell message of the Lord; the spiritual instructions to Uddhava. The timing of this dialogue is when the Lord's incarnation is at its end. These teachings of Krishna to Uddhava spread over 23 chapters; from the 7th to 29th chapters of the 11th Kanda Canto of Bhagavata Purana. In Uddhava Gita, Krishna explains about spirituality, supremacy of devotion, and paths to enlightenment. He illustrates mind as a root cause of all miseries in the world. Krishna states; shake off all attachment and move about the world with a mind wholly centered on Krishna. You must always remember that whatever is thought by the mind, perceived by the eye and the ear and spoken by the tongue is creation of the mind and therefore illusory. The mind is a victim to the illusion of diversity; the good and evil, and discrimination between various types of actions. By controlling the mind you will see the whole world in your own self and your own self in the Supreme Lord. He who knows the truth of the Self will be a friend of all beings and will have peace of mind. Such a person will not undergo transmigration. When asked who is a pious soul, the Lord emphasizes the importance of Satsanga or association with great souls, which puts an end to all attachments. Commenting on the extinction of the "I" sense, which causes Rajas guna to invade the mind, the Lord describes the teachings of Hamsa Gita. With regards to the path of devotion bhakti yogaKrishna states that without love for Him, virtues and learning are unfruitful. He who loves Krishna is made pure and is a purifying influence upon the whole universe. Krishna also teaches about the importance of varna ashrama dharma. Commenting on Jnana, Vijnana and Bhakti; The Uddhava Gita: The Final Teaching of Krishna and Niyama which are prescribed in the scriptures for the attainment of final beatitude, Krishna stresses the importance of the three yogas of self-discipline. In chapter 2, verse 21, the Lord states that "The self is most easily realized in the human form. Through Sankhya and Yoga, the path of knowledge and path of action; I can be experienced as the self of all, manifest in all. It teaches the existence of 25 basic constituents of matter derived from Parkriti. From Parkriti, buddhi evolves which gives rise to ahamkara, the concept of "I. Yoga is related to Sankhya, which is a system of self-analysis and self-discipline. It seeks a state of higher understanding through the control of body, mind and senses. The whole in Yoga is Ishvara that consists of both Parkriti and Purusha. Uddhava Gita like Bhagavadgita seeks to synthesize the yoga and Sankhya systems.

  • The Deities of New Vrindaban
The Deities of New Vrindaban Aaron Boyd, Maggie Dorsten, Lauren Spartano, and Stephanie Villaire 1 Deity Worship in the Hare Krishna Faith Hare Krishna devotees make the distinction that they perform Deity worship and not idol worship. Madhudvisa dasa, a member of the New Vrindaban community, explains, “It is Krishna on the altar, not a stone statue or an idol. But unless our eyes are purified we can’t see Krishna, we think he is a statue…but he is Krishna. We worship Krishna, not a ‘form of Krishna’ or a ‘statue of Krishna’.” In other words, Krishna is so spiritual that He cannot be seen with the senses. Therefore, Krishna agrees to appear in the form of a Deity so that devotees can worship and make offerings to Him. More specifically, each day, the devotees cook seven meals for Krishna, bathe and dress Him, and chant and sing songs for Him. Deity Construction No hard and fast rules exist to govern the type of material from which the Deities must be constructed. A Deity (also known as a “murti”) can be made out of any type of material because devotees believe that Krishna can appear in any form. According to Madhudvisa dasa, “The Deity is made by a devotee, but the devotee doesn’t try to ‘make’ Krishna. He prays for Krishna to appear in the form of the Deity.” Installing Deities The question of whether or not to open a Hare Krishna center must be considered carefully before actions are taken. Once a Hare Krishna temple is installed, it is impossible to un-install the Deities within it.

  • Talks on Uddhava Gita & Vedanta Dindimah
Talks on Uddhava Gita & Vedanta Dindimah -by Swami Paramarthananda Sarasvati Swami Paramarthananda Sarasvati's Yagna talk on Uddhava Gita and Vedanta Dindimah are tran- scribed and its condensed version is produced here. Uddhava Gita Vedas are our original scriptures. Puranas, Smrutis and Ithikasas are only expansion of Vedic teaching. To study these puranas, one should keep in mind the background of Vedic teaching. Veda points out two stages of life. 1. Life style guided by the veda poorva bhaga 2. Life style governed by vedanta, veda uttara bhaga, final part of veda. Thus by living a religious way of life followed by spiritual way of life, one should attain moksha or fulfillment. Religious way of life has these three main ingredients: 1. Satkarmani- noble activity - helps to grow inwardly. Contribution to society through pancha maha yagna (deva yagna, pitru yagna, manushya yagna, brahma yagna and bootha yagna) is of at most important. 2. Satgunas : all virtues talked in Veda, as mentioned in Bhagavt Gita and Uddhava Gita - sathyam, ahimsa, etc. Ethical values are an integral part of religious life. Pooja without ethical values, Bhagavan does not accept. 3. Satbhavanas: healthy attitude, the way we look at everything. Seeing everything as ishvara’s manifestation, following the path of dharma and accepting results of all karmas as ishvara prasad constitute satbhavana. These three together, is the religious way of life. Following this religious way of life sufficiently will bring in ishvara’s grace, which will lead one to get a guru and eventually self-enquiry and jnanam. Karma yoga to jnana yoga, religious life to spiritual life, pravriti to nivriti, grhastha to sannyasa is the total vision of Veda.

  • Shiva and Durga: Their Real Identity
8/3/2019 Shiva and Durga Shiva and Durga: Their Real Identity By Stephen Knapp The different Vedic gods have particular roles or functions, and represent or control different forces of nature. Thus, they are not all the same. They all have different meanings and potencies to do particular things in the arrangement and management of the universal creation. In this way, most of them have specific positions and purposes to help facilitate the cause for the creation, maintenance, and even the destruction of the universe. Since our analysis of the Vedic texts indicated that the Bhagavatam was the most ripened fruit of Vedic knowledge, as well as being the commentary of all Vedanta by Srila Vyasadeva Himself, we will include the conclusive descriptions as found in the Bhagavatam to reach our definitive understanding. The most prominent of all the Vedic gods consists of the Trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. Brahma assists in creating the world, Vishnu maintains it, and Shiva helps in its annihilation. (I have dealt with this aspect much more extensively in my book, How the Universe Was Created, so I’ll not include that here.) Those that follow the Vedic path, can generally be divided into three main categories; namely those who worship Shiva and are Shaivites, those who worship Shakti or the Goddess and are Shaktas, and those who worship Vishnu, the Vaishnavas. So let’s take a look at who is Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. * * * One of the most significant of all the Vedic gods is Shiva. And one of the most noted of all the goddesses is Shiva’s wife, Durga.
