  • The Deities of New Vrindaban
The Deities of New Vrindaban Aaron Boyd, Maggie Dorsten, Lauren Spartano, and Stephanie Villaire 1 Deity Worship in the Hare Krishna Faith Hare Krishna devotees make the distinction that they perform Deity worship and not idol worship. Madhudvisa dasa, a member of the New Vrindaban community, explains, “It is Krishna on the altar, not a stone statue or an idol. But unless our eyes are purified we can’t see Krishna, we think he is a statue…but he is Krishna. We worship Krishna, not a ‘form of Krishna’ or a ‘statue of Krishna’.” In other words, Krishna is so spiritual that He cannot be seen with the senses. Therefore, Krishna agrees to appear in the form of a Deity so that devotees can worship and make offerings to Him. More specifically, each day, the devotees cook seven meals for Krishna, bathe and dress Him, and chant and sing songs for Him. Deity Construction No hard and fast rules exist to govern the type of material from which the Deities must be constructed. A Deity (also known as a “murti”) can be made out of any type of material because devotees believe that Krishna can appear in any form. According to Madhudvisa dasa, “The Deity is made by a devotee, but the devotee doesn’t try to ‘make’ Krishna. He prays for Krishna to appear in the form of the Deity.” Installing Deities The question of whether or not to open a Hare Krishna center must be considered carefully before actions are taken. Once a Hare Krishna temple is installed, it is impossible to un-install the Deities within it.

He is restless and is hankering for peace all the time. He is dazzled by the glitter of the material world and has lost his moorings and his sense of purpose. He is dogged by multiple sorrows, griefs and pains. Perhaps life stories of those great men who have struggled against such problems and overcome them can still inspire men and infuse in them the courage to break the shackles which chain them. It was with this object in view that the Publications Division of the Government of India gave me the responsibility to write a brief biography of the Late Hanuman Prasad Poddar (Bhaiji), the mainstay of the Gita Press, Gorakhpur and editor of Kalyan, under the ‘Builders of Modern India* series, for which I am sincerely grateful.

  • Krishna Kirtan Jaya Prema Nidhan— 2008
We will keep you posted if we can squeeze in a mini-retreat fo- cusing exclusively on the Holy Name. —email to friends, dec. 30, 2007 Krishna Kirtan Jaya Prema Nidhan — 2008 Yamuna had envisioned a stained-glass entrance to the Deity room for many years, and in 2008 began work on her vision. Using faux stained glass paints, she designed the entrance to feature the Trnad api sunicena verse of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu centered at the top, with two stanzas from the Siksastaka prayer of Bhaktivinoda Thakur in Gitavali—Krishna kirtan jaya prema nidan “chanting is a storehouse of love of God” and Krishna kirtan jaya bhakti vilas “chanting is the pastime of devotion”—framing each side. Although the project took many months to complete, it was extraordinary and perfectly exemplified her devotional mood. The long winters in Saranagati left its residents housebound for much of the time, and Yamuna utilized the time in writing her memoir and corresponding with devotees and friends via email. Frequently, a person unknown to her would write with a cooking, Deity or kir- tan question, and she would unfailingly reply. Her emails were always instructive, encouraging and supportive: Kartamasa das: Thank you so much for your association there in Saranagati. It was so brief—almost like a dream—but yet still so essential and vital to my health to see and hear and taste and feel the bhakti which my soul desperately, craves despite all my efforts to distract myself and smother all feeling with dullness. I particularly liked the morning classes, and the japa on the first night.

  • To Be Controlled by Love | English
TO BE CONTROLLED BY LOVE THERE IS NO HAPPINESS IN THIS WORLD You know that everyone wants to be happy. All living entities want happiness, but this world is arranged so that no one will ever be happy here. We cannot be happy. You should realise that there is no happiness and no tranquillity in this world. Even if a man is wealthy and has all facility for happiness, still some problem or dangerous sickness will disturb him. We may not be weak while we are young, but many diseases appear as we get older. Even if one has no diseases, there are many other problems. His wife may become sick; another relative or a friend may have cancer or tuberculosis; and someone else has another disease or some other problem. This world is arranged so that we always have a rope around our neck, and at some point it starts to tighten. This is because we have forgotten Krishna. As long as we are not endeavouring for Krishna consciousness, we will be more and more unhappy, with more problems, for many lifetimes. This is the truth, hut we can only understand all this by the grace of the disciplic succession. That is called Vedic authority. THE MOST VALID AUTHORITY Whom can we believe regarding what is good and what is bad? We must have some authority who is very kind and selfless, and in whom we can believe. The Vedic literatures such as the Vedas, Upanisads and Srimad-Bhagavatam are like that, but they cannot speak directly to us.

This image is very unique. Here, one can see Ramanuja with the gnyAna mudra (the sign of a teacher; see his right/left hands); usually, Swami Ramanuja’s images always present him in the anjali mudra (offering worship, both hands together in obeisance). Our elders say that Swami Ramanuja’s image at Thirumala shows the gnyAna mudra, because it is here that Swami Ramanuja gave his lectures on Vedarta Sangraha, his insightful, profound treatise on the meaning of the Upanishads. It is also said that Swami Ramanuja here is considered an Acharya to Lord Srinivasa Himself, and that is why the hundi is located right in front of swami Ramanuja at the temple (as a mark of respect to an Acharya). In Thirumala, other than Lord Srinivasa, Varaha, Narasimha and A VEDICS JOURNAL Varadaraja, the only other accepted shrine is that of Swami Ramanuja.
