Rhizomatic Cities in Italo Calvino’s INVISIBLE CITIES Sambit Panigrahi Abstract: Italo Calvino’s highly successful novel Invisible Cities thoroughly explains Deleuze and Guattari’s famous postmodern concept of rhizome. The cities in the novel do not possess a fixed and coherent structure; rather they exude a structurality that is immensely fleeting and continually evolving. Calvino’s novelInvisible Cities which ironically precedes Deleuze and Guattari’s book A Thousand Plateaus clearly demonstrates the defining characteristic features of rhizome through the unusual and seemingly incomprehensible structure of the individual cities. There have been scanty critical responses in the past regarding the rhizomatic behavior of Calvino’s cities, despite an extraordinary abundance of critical works existing on Calvino’s writing. The rhizomatic patterns of Calvino’s cities, it is believed by the author, need further critical attention. Rhizome, through its perpetually unstable structural modeling, perhaps most effectively demonstrates our utterly disarrayed postmodern condition of existence where any desired structural stability and coherence is a virtual impossibility, and of this trait, Calvino’s cities in the said novel are the principal demonstrators. Based on these precepts, this article intends to analyze how Calvino’s cities in the novel, with their perpetual and immense structural variabilities, exude before the readers a typical postmodern world that wholesomely discards the very idea of structural coherence and stability. Deleuze and Guattari’s collaboratively introduced concept of ‘rhizome’ in their classic philosophical treatise A Thousand Plateaus is a suitable demonstrator of our disarrayed condition of postmodernity. As is well known, rhizome is their devised model that explains the relentlessly fluctuating nature of a postmodern structure. -
Kleinherenbrink's Externality Thesis and Deleuze's Machine Ontology
Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy, vol. 16, no. 1, 2020 REVIEW ARTICLE AGAINST THE VIRTUAL: KLEINHERENBRINK’S EXTERNALITY THESIS AND DELEUZE’S MACHINE ONTOLOGY Ekin Erkan ABSTRACT: Reviewing Arjen Kleinherenbrink’s recent book, Against Continuity: Gilles Deleuze's Speculative Realism (2019), this paper undertakes a detailed review of Kleinherenbrink’s fourfold “externality thesis” vis-à-vis Deleuze’s machine ontology. Reading Deleuze as a philosopher of the actual, this paper renders Deleuzean syntheses as passive contemplations, pulling other (passive) entities into an (active) experience and designating relations as expressed through contraction. In addition to reviewing Kleinherenbrink’s book (which argues that the machine ontology is a guiding current that emerges in Deleuze’s work after Difference and Repetition) alongside much of Deleuze’s oeuvre, we relate and juxtapose Deleuze’s machine ontology to positions concerning externality held by a host of speculative realists. Arguing that the machine ontology has its own account of interaction, change, and novelty, we ultimately set to prove that positing an ontological “cut” on behalf of the virtual realm is unwarranted because, unlike the realm of actualities, it is extraneous to the structure of becoming—that is, because it cannot be homogenous, any theory of change vis-à-vis the virtual makes it impossible to explain how and why qualitatively different actualities are produced. Deleuze and Zhuangzi: Actualization and Counter-Actualization
DOI: 10.4312/as.2019.7.1.315-335 315 Deleuze and Zhuangzi: Actualization and Counter-actualization Margus OTT*1 Abstract Deleuze has presented one of the richest ontologies in 20th century philosophy, and its conceptual machinery could be more fully used also in Sinology. This article focuses on two of his concepts: actualization and counter-actualization. Actualization proceeds from the virtual and through the intensive processes of individuation moves towards actual struc- tures. Counter-actualization proceeds in the opposite direction, and starting from the actual, through creative involution discovers intensities and the virtual. It has the aspects of making a body without organs, creating intensities, and diversifying them. Actualization by differen- tiation is a common understanding of genetic processes in the Chinese tradition in general, and in the Zhuangzi in particular. In this article, Deleuze’s concepts are used to (re)interpret the account of differentiation in the story of the death of Zhuangzi’s wife, and the strange story from the chapter “Ultimate Joy” where “horses engender men.” Counter-actualization by discarding, dismantling, forgetting, thawing of forms and reaching towards the intensive and the virtual, a merging with the Dao, is a recurrent theme in the Chinese Daoism, and it is shown on the example of Yan Hui’s “sitting and forgetting,” master swimmer of Lü, and the thought of death, how they project beyond the actualized rigid and metric forms toward a more intensive, plastic, and joyful existence. In the first part, Bland’s critical race theory of jazz is outlined through the dialogue provided By the protagonist Alex in The Cry of Jazz demonstrating the dialectical Hegelianism of Bland’s analysis. Bland’s theory of jazz is sifted through a reading of Deleuze’s Difference and Repetition as a critique of Hegelianism. Through an elaBoration of jazz theory, the Deleuzian concepts of difference and repetition develop further Bland’s jazz theory leading to the death of jazz and the potential Becoming of a new Amer- ica. The survival of the spirit of jazz after death is demonstrated through the Body without organs. Here, Bland’s Afro-Futurist critical race theory comes into focus as a pure affectivity that decom- poses the Boundaries of musicality and the social condition simultaneously. In 1977, the Sex Pistols released their hit single, rising to numBer 2 on the UK Singles Chart, «God Save the Queen». In the song, singer Johnny Rotten roared, «Don’t Be told what you want; Don’t Be told what you need; There’s no future; No future; No future for you». -

In this paper I will uncover some key challenges in relation to working pedagogically with disabled people through the exploration of a critical disability studies perspective. Firstly, I will unpack some of the assumptions that underpin educational understandings of 'disability' and 'impairment', suggesting that we need to engage more willingly with politicised and socially constructed ideas in relation to these phenomena. Secondly, I will raise questions about the current aims of pedagogy in relation to the market and the autonomous learner. In light of the market – and the subject it produces - I will argue that 'disability and 'impairment’ demand critical researchers to think more creatively about setting the conditions for experimenting with socially just pedagogies. Thirdly, with this experimentation in mind, I will draw upon the work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to think of socially just pedagogies in terms of rhizomes (n-1); productive models of desire and planes of immanence. These concepts construct pedagogies as 'becoming' rather than 'being' – opening up resistant spaces and potential territories of social justice – all of them uncertain. 2 Introduction: a multiplicity of challenges Educators … should reject forms of schooling that marginalize students who are poor, black and least advantaged. -

The pre- sentation of transgender people, especially the transgender protagonist in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, has been criticized as a formulaic depiction with little portrayal of their struggles and triumphs. At the same time, the transgender protagonist is viewed positively as an integral force in the novel. The poem “After Before and After” has been praised for its creative portrayal of transgender people. A study of transgen- der issues in relation to desire and connection helps to show that both texts offer more possibilities of liberation towards the state of “becoming.” This study applies Gilles De- leuze and Félix Guattari’s theory of schizoanalysis to explore transgender people’s lines of flight, rhizomatic movements and transversal connections towards the state of de- territorialization in India and the US. EUROPE WITHOUT ORGANS? Opicinus de Canistris and the New Anomos of the Earth Łukasz Moll Instytut Socjologii Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego / the Institute of Sociology, University of Wrocław, Poland Michał Pospiszyl Instytut Studiów Politycznych Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Warszawie / Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland Abstract The on-going crisis of identity of Europe is related to deep transformations of European borders. Today’s borders no longer lie at the limits of territorial order. We live in turbulent times of shifting and metamorphosing of the European borders. In this critical context new geopolitical imaginaries of Europe are much needed. We argue that in our situation analogous representational crisis of Europe which arose at the end of the Middle Ages is worth examining. The collapse of medieval vision of the world, in which “res publica christiana” played the crucial part, was followed by the revolution in mapping of space with portolans, scientific cartography and secularization of knowledge. One of the most imaginative and confusing cartographer of the passage from political theology of papacy and empire to modern territorial state system was the 14th century priest, Opicinus de Canistris. Our theoretical attempt is a part of renewed interest in Opicinus’ work (K. Whittington, V. Morse). We propose the analysis of his maps in the light of medieval theories of political body. Rapid social changes enabled Opicinus to combine theological and secular arguments in order to represent deterritorialization of Europe (as understood by Deleuze and Guattari). Opicinus experienced new possibilities of mapping space before Eurocentric reterritorialization of the globe took place (as described by Carl Schmitt in The Nomos of the Earth). -

Becoming-Woman acts as the entryway into a nomadic theatre in so far as it indicates a willingness to inhabit positions and perspectives other than those delineated as normatively powerful and to develop according to these alternative desires. "Becoming Woman" does not, however, represent an end in itself, but plays an introductory role that may facilitate a potentially infinite number of minoritarian "becomings." Ultimately, this nomadic theatre seeks to destabilize the stronghold that identity-based thinking has on the production and limitation of our desires.
