This species occurs in alpine and boreal areas. Records from Japan, DPR Korea, Tibet and Nepal may be misidentifications of Caeoma tsukubaense, or other similar species. Old records from the USA are likely to be misidentifications of Chrysomyxa reticulata, although, due to the similarity between C. rhododendri and C. reticulata, it is currently not possible to be certain whether both species may be present (Chalkley, D. Systematic Mycology and Microbiology Laboratory, ARS, USDA. Invasive Fungi. Northern spruce-rhododendron rust - Chrysomyxa rhododendri. http://nt.ars- grin.gov/taxadescriptions/factsheets/index.cfm?thisapp=Chrysomyxarhododendri (Accessed June 2012). Telia have not been observed in northern Canada, thus there is no apparent danger of spruce infection in this location. Records from BPI refer to specimens in the US National Fungus Collections, those from PDD refer to specimens in the New Zealand Fungal and Plant Disease Collection.
