Despite the fact that the two authors belong to a different period of time; Djebar's first experience of postcolonial feminist writing starting earlier in the first half of the twentieth century, while Zabuzhko's first experience of postcolonial feminist writing was towards the end of the same century. Moreover, the two female authors were writing about their countries; Algeria and Ukraine, whose colonial situations in return were not the same. Algeria being it colonized by France; a Western-European imperialist country which colonized Algeria; a totally different country beyond the sea for about a hundred-thirty-two years. -

The country's growing up from Communism to Democracy produced special literature. Vasyl Stus – the master of words, who had to become the voice of resistance. The poet nominated for Nobel Prize. genealogy Article Collective Trauma and Mystic Dreams in Zabuzhko’s “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets” Mariia Lenherr Department of Psychotherapy, Sigmund Freud University, 1020 Vienna, Austria; [email protected] Received: 20 October 2018; Accepted: 8 January 2019; Published: 11 January 2019 Abstract: The 20th century of human history was overshadowed by the horrifying events of world wars and totalitarian regimes, with their traumatic experiences becoming the very focus of today’s modern globalized society. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is one of the ways of dealing with this overwhelmingly violent phenomenon. This article will discuss an historical traumatic event through literature, using psychoanalytic theories of trauma. The problem is discussed on the level of the actual theoretical landscape including the relation between transgenerational transmitted trauma, collective trauma, and cumulative trauma inscribed in a “foundation matrix” (Foulkes). As a clinical vignette, the novel “Museum of Abandoned Secrets” by modern Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko is used. The author addresses the functions of dreams, scrutinizing the psychodynamics of the novel using concepts of projective identification, mourning, the need for repair, and epigenetic and fractal theory. It is suggested that the novel facilitates the characters’ journey through trauma and its integration by the large groups (of readers). OSNOVY publi CATALOGUE & RIGHTS DISTRIBUTION shing 2019 about Osnovy Publishing was founded in 1992 by Bohdan Krawchenko and Solomiya Pavlychko. Over the past twenty years, Osnovy has published over three hundred titles. After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine critically needed literature in Ukrainian. Osnovy was created to fill this need. The editorial board – headed by Solomiya Pavlychko from 1992 to 1999 – focused on providing readers in the newly independent Ukraine with high quality translations of classic masterpieces and a wide range of academic works. Osnovy supplied a new generation of students with world-class publications in literature, economics, political science, sociology and other key disciplines. Osnovy has translated and published Aristotle, W. Shakespeare, W. Golding, H. Matsuura, J. Kerouac and other important authors from antiquity to the present day. In 2012, Osnovy published Franz Kafka’s collection of his early works Contemplation, stylized after its first printing in 1912. Osnovy has also published numerous fundamental works in philosophy – F. Nietzsche, Simone de Beauvoir, M. Foucault, S. Freud and many others. The textbooks Microeconomics and Macroeconomics (P. Samuelson and W. Nordhaus) and Fundamentals of Financial Accounting (G. Welsch and D. Short) helped students of the early 1990s through the transition to a market economy. Osnovy has also published a Ukrainian translation of renowned historian Norman Davies’ Europe: A History in 2001. This monumental work is currently in its seventh run. Osnovy is also proud of its own original titles. The works of D. Nalyvaiko, V. Lytvynov, M. Zerov, L. Kurbas, S. Pavlychko, D. Pavlychko and S. Genres dedicated to the representation of literature, including the increasingly popular genre of anthology, were among the foremost means of creating an image of the literature in its totality. From the end of the 1990s onward, the search for a usable tradition was accompanied by a sense of obligation to highlight one’s own modernity, delimit its periods and define its constitutive properties. The national literature has faced the problem taking into account the heritage of totalitarianism and colonialism, which involves coming to terms with its internal space as a multilingual one. On the other hand, the space of literature has extended over the state border, promising to create a new homogeneity of literature and overcoming the differences between domestic and diaspora literature. Key words: anthology, memory, post-colonialism, post-totalitarianism, space, Ukrainian literature. Three Histories and One Theory In the course of the last 20 years Ukrainian literature has been the central character in at least three narratives which have yet to be thoroughly comprehended or described by literary history. During this period Ukrainian literature faced the problem of self-determination in a post-totalitarian, post- colonial, and postmodern situation. -

Introduction: Mapping the Ukrainian Poetry of New York In the midst of ever-increasing quantity, anthologies enable individual voices to be heard above the collective noise. —Czeslaw Milosz1 In the very city of New York literally every day poets read their work in dozens of different places: at museums, churches, universities, various institutions, libraries, theatres, galleries, cafes and private places. […] Every place that has a roof is a place for poetry. —Bohdan Boychuk2 This poetry is no hymn to the homeland; rather the gaze of the allegorist, as it falls on the city, is the gaze of alienated man. It is the gaze of the flaneur, whose way of life still conceals behind a mitigating nimbus the coming desolation of the big-city dweller. —Walter Benjamin3 The Encounter Legend has it that on a mid-fall day in 1966, while on an official trip to New York City as part of the Soviet-Ukrainian delegation to the annual convention of the United Nations, Ivan Drach—then a thirty-year-old aspiring poet and screenwriter—managed to escape the KGB personnel tailing the poet and headed into a district of the city totally unknown to him. After wandering around this strange neighborhood, the poet stopped before a cafeteria, entered it, and spotted a bearded, bespectacled man sitting in the corner as if waiting for someone. Drach approached him; the two men shook hands. The bearded man, believed to be the American poet Allen Ginsberg, lived nearby in an area known as the East Village. The Ukrainian poet did not know conversational English well, and Ginsberg did not know any Ukrainian. -

Rethinking the Postwar Era: Soviet Ukrainian Writers Under Late Stalinism, 1945-1949 by Iuliia Kysla A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Iuliia Kysla, 2018 Abstract This dissertation advances the study of late Stalinism, which has until recently been regarded as a bizarre appendage to Stalin’s rule, and aims to answer the question of whether late Stalinism was a rupture with or continuation of its prewar precursor. I analyze the reintegration of Ukrainian writers into the postwar Soviet polity and their adaptation to the new realities following the dramatic upheavals of war. Focusing on two parallel case studies, Lviv and Kyiv, this study explores how the Soviet regime worked with members of the intelligentsia in these two cities after 1945, at a time when both sides were engaged in “identification games.” This dissertation demonstrates that, despite the regime’s obsession with control, there was some room for independent action on the part of Ukrainian writers and other intellectuals. Authors exploited gaps in Soviet discourse to reclaim agency, which they used as a vehicle to promote their own cultural agendas. Unlike the 1930s, when all official writers had to internalize the tropes of Soviet culture, in the postwar years there was some flexibility in an author’s ability to accept or reject the Soviet system. Moreover, this dissertation suggests that Stalin’s postwar cultural policy—unlike the strategies of the 1930s, which relied predominantly on coercive tactics—was defined mainly by discipline by humiliation, which often involved bullying and threatening members of the creative intelligentsia.
