SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

YEAR IN REVIEW DEAN’S MESSAGE

This September marks one year since the grand opening of the Goodes Hall expansion, and I find myself looking back with pride on the world-class facility we built together with the support of our alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. We now have an outstanding expanded facility in Kingston to enhance our students’ learning experience and are well- positioned for growth at our new downtown facility. On the international stage, we have 100+ top global business school partners at which QSB students enhance their Queen’s experience. As you’ll see from QSB’s many accomplishments outlined in the 2012/2013 Year in Review, we’ve had a great year. In addition to these highlights, we have also launched our most recent professional masters program, the Master of Management Analytics (qsb.ca/mma), and continued to grow our Summer Innovation Institute (queensinnovation.ca), a joint initiative with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science to advance innovation and entrepreneurship for undergraduates. As we enter the next phase of our fundraising campaign, I am also looking forward to executing the campaign’s strategic priorities: increasing student diversity in the Commerce program; establishing more scholarships for full- time MBA students; attracting and retaining the best faculty; and further developing innovative teaching methods. These strategic priorities will continue to strengthen QSB’s position as a leader in the increasingly competitive global business education market. Your support of the school in the coming years will help us make this happen. I hope you enjoy the Year in Review's look back, as we all look forward to the school’s continued success.

From providing financial support, to speaking at student conferences and in the classroom, to recruiting new graduates and referring prospective students to our programs, alumni share in the school’s successes and aspirations. Staying connected 23 QSB alumni events across Canada, the US and UK brought together 920 attendees. 19 class reunions were held in 2012; 17 are planned for October 2013 as Homecoming returns to Queen’s. The QSB Reunion Weekend Brunch in October 2012 attracted a record 236 alumni, faculty and staff. The second “Queen’s Student Today, Alumni Tomorrow” luncheon in Toronto brought together 14 alumni and 65 Commerce students. QSB’s outreach to alumni via social media resulted in a 25% increase in members joining the QSB Alumni LinkedIn group and an 83% increase in followership of @QSB, the school’s Twitter account. qsb.ca/invest

Queen’s School of Business funds from various sources increased 10.6% in the 2012-2013 fiscal year as a result of strategic growth in student enrollments across several programs. The Master of Finance (MFin), Master of International Business (MIB) and Accelerated MBA for Business Graduates (AMBA) programs broke all previous records. The increase in the intake of Commerce students, made possible by the Goodes Hall expansion, resulted in more high-achieving candidates being accepted into the program.

“The new Goodes Commons is the perfect place to be. We can have our meetings here, we can meet between classes, and we can plan the rest of our weeks together. It has really helped us increase the level of communications with our peers.”

30 “I was brought up to believe that giving was an important part of life and have always enjoyed assisting others. Since graduating, Deborah (BScH’86) and I have spent most of our time living and working abroad. When thinking about how to support Queen’s, we were impressed by QSB’s international exchange program. "Over the years, we have met many Queen’s graduates located around the world. Without exception, they have been happy and thriving. We wanted to help ensure that as many Commerce students as possible would have the opportunity to study internationally, to get an early perspective on what the world has to offer and how they can make a difference.”

“I’ve met many QSB alumni in my 35+-year career in business, much of which has been spent outside Canada. I’m often struck by how impressive they are, both in their professionalism and ability to compete against graduates from any other university in the world. “As we continue to make our mark on the global business scene, the diversity of our graduates is another attribute that distinguishes us. That is why I have chosen to support a scholarship that gives priority to students from the United States to study Commerce at Queen’s. Exposing the next generation of American business leaders to the exceptional QSB experience will only help to build awareness of the quality of our school in the wider international community.” John Nixon, BCom’78

34 “I believe that prejudice, discrimination and other negative biases can be broken down through education and interaction with people of other backgrounds — experiences that Queen’s offers its students. I give to the university because I believe a good education is important, and because I feel incredibly fortunate and proud to have attended Queen’s. “The Commerce program gave me a great foundation for my life after university. I want Queen’s to be able to maintain its high standards, and for a wide range of students to be able to benefit as I did"

"Queen’s School of Business was my “home away from home” during my four amazing undergraduate years there. My experience would not have been the same had alumni not given back to the school, and now it is my turn to repay their kindness. “Contributing a small amount each month can really add up and makes a significant difference for current students. Show your appreciation for all the school has done for you by contributing to QSB.” Rose Thuringer, BCom’11

“The Chancellor’s Award had a significant impact on my university experience. It provided me with the opportunity to attend Queen’s University and immerse myself within the school’s community. The award allowed me to focus my time and energy on various initiatives across Canada and to give back to my community. The support of donors who made such an award possible was instrumental in giving me the chance to explore, learn and push my limits.” Marco D’Arienzo , BCom’13

In addition to contributing to the Nyantende Foundation, Frosh Week also supported six other national charities, to the tune of $9,000. Giving back to the community, locally, nationally and Frosh Week 2012 raised $9,000 internationally, is something QSB students take seriously. for charity From ComSoc’s ’Jail’N’Bail’ that raised nearly $11,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society, to the MBA students’ $11,175 donation to Right to Play, the efforts of QSB students to improve the conditions of others crosses all boundaries. In 2012-2013, QSB students in various programs raised more than $122,800 in support of 22 charities. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know that as a Commerce family we not only come together to support each other, but also to support those around us who are less fortunate,” said Natalie Fisher, BCom’13. She, along with classmates Brendon Holder, BCom’13 and Jacie DeHoop, Comm’14, were the organizers of ComSoc’s Holiday for Hope campaign that raised $11,000, providing meals and toys for 78 local families, including 120 children, in December.

“On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of my graduation, I started thinking about the intervening years and the impressions I have today about my time at Queen’s School of Business. What struck me most is that one course, Behavioural Accounting, and the professor, Norman Macintosh, had a lasting influence on my work-life. As a CEO for 25 years, I tried to set rules and policies that would be interpreted and followed, rather than perverted or skirted. Professor Macintosh’s work is very important to me and I found a way to thank him by creating the Professor Norman Macintosh MBA Entrance Scholarship.” Jos Wintermans, MBA’72

43 “Being awarded the Len Morrow MBA Scholarship was very influential in my decision to attend Queen’s School of Business. The scholarship eased the financial burden and helped me to focus on my learning and interactions with many bright and dedicated classmates, professors, and alumni. “My Queen’s experience has been fantastic. Thanks to Mr. Morrow’s generosity, I have strengthened my business acumen, fine-tuned my leadership skills, and made personal and professional contacts that will be instrumental as I move forward in my career.” Susie Lévesque, MBA’13

“I am honoured to be the recipient of the Commerce’64 Fellowship of Managerial Economics, and grateful for the support it has provided me in my research in business economics. This research explores such issues as the interaction between competition in the product market and innovation in organizations. A key ingredient to higher incomes and increases in the standard of living is innovation and associated productivity gains, areas where Canada has lagged in recent years. This research is of interest to policymakers, who seek to raise the standards of living of their constituents; and to business leaders, who try to adapt to ever-intensifying global competition. It is also of interest to my MBA students, the business leaders of tomorrow. I am very excited about this research, and grateful for the Commerce’64 Fellowship that has enabled me to explore this important topic.” Jean-Etienne de Bettignies Commerce’64 Fellow of Managerial Economics
