    Appendix A Biography: Andy Devine There is an abundance of information on Andy Devine on the internet which includes Andy Devine’s film, radio and TV career. This section is not designed to be all inclusive of his history but merely a short synopses of his life before and after his Big Bear presence. The major part of this section deals with Andy Devine’s activities while in Big Bear from 1945 to 1960. Andy Devine was born on October 7, 1905 and grew up in Kingman, Arizona where his family moved when he was a year old. Devine was an able athlete as a student and actually played semi-pro football under a phony name (Jeremiah Schwartz, often erroneously presumed to be his real name). Devine used the false name in order to remain eligible for college football. After being a successful football player at St. Mary & St. Benedict College, Arizona State Teacher's College, and Santa Clara University, Devine went to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actor. Devine had a number of small roles in silent films, (several of which were in Big Bear). Devine met his wife-to-be, Dorothy House, in 1933 while filming “Doctor Bull” at Fox Studios. They were married on October 28, 1933, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They had five children: Andrew Devine, Jr. (born 1934), Patrick Gabriel Devine (born 1935), Susanna Rachel Devine (born 1937), Arthur Matthew Devine (born 1938) and Deborah Catherine Devine (born 1941). Andy, Jr. and Patrick are actors while the rest of his and House's children have other careers.

Buffington Also Known As: Jesse Bowers, Adele Burgdorfer of St. Louis, Colt Remington Lived: February 12, 1900 - November 23, 1973 Worked as: guild co-founder, movie theatre ticket cashier, scenario writer, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Matthew Hipps Building on her early success in silent cinema, Adele S. Buffington enjoyed a long and successful career as a Hollywood screenwriter. Unfortunately, very little has been written about Buffington’s career, especially as it relates to her roots in silent cinema. Born Adele Burgdorfer in St. Louis, she began working as a movie theatre ticket cashier as a teenager. During her three years as a cashier, she was able to study numerous films on screen before her first attempts at writing a scenario of her own (McCreadie 58). She also took notice of the movie patrons as they flooded into the theatre to see their favorite characters on the screen. She is quoted in the Ft. Wayne, Indiana, newspaper as saying: “I had always wanted to write, but never had the nerve to try before. But there came the hour when I simply had to do it—and I did. Every night when my work in the cage was done, I went to the library and read, getting details and atmosphere for the scenes I had in mind—for the background against which I wanted those dear people I knew to move and make drama. Then when everyone else was asleep, I would write and write” (qtd. in McCreadie 58). Buffington’s career officially began at the young age of nineteen when she sold her first script, La Petite (1919), to an independent studio for three hundred dollars and was subsequently hired to work for Thomas H.

    For immediate release: December 21, 2007 WEXNER CENTER GOES WEST FOR NINE-FILM SERIES IN JANUARY This January, the Wexner Center presents a five-night, nine-film series offering some of the best films from that most American of genres, the western. Though the western has been proclaimed dead or irrelevant numerous times in film history, the recent releases of 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and even the Coen brothers’ western update No Country for Old Men suggest that there is still plenty of life and contemporary relevance in the genre (see the New York The Searchers, showing January 10 Image courtesy Warner Bros. Times Magazine cover story “How the Western Was Won” on November 11 for more on this topic). The Western series at the Wexner Center—which kicks off January 10—presents a rare chance to revisit (or see on the big screen for the first time) some influential western classics. It features some of the genre’s iconic stars (including John Wayne, James Stewart, Randolph Scott, and Gary Cooper) in films by some of the genre’s masters (such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Anthony Mann, and Budd Boetticher). While this series focuses on the postwar western cycle typified by flawed heroes and muddied morals (exemplified by Ford’s landmark The Searchers), it also includes lighter approaches (The Plainsman, Trail of the Vigilantes) and the clearly revisionist Little Big Man. This series was organized by the Wexner Center’s film staff. Tickets for each night of the series are $7 general public; $5 members, students, and senior citizens; $3 children under 12.

Warner Brothers cultivated that aura of intrigue not only about the place Casablanca but also about the man Rick. His mysterious past is among the reasons Casablanca is ranked by general audi- ences as the most popular American film of all time. Questioning Rick's past seems almost subversive, somehow disloyal, unfair to the memory of Humphrey Bogart. And yet, there is no doubt about it: the mysterious Rick Blaine was a law- yer-a criminal attorney at that! Rick, surely the most famous cine- matic bar owner in history, was also admitted at the bar of justice. Before coming to Casablanca for the waters, Rick had been a practicing attorney first in New York City and then in Paris. Webfooters Post Card Club PO Box 17240 Portland OR 97217-0240 www.thewebfooters.com Happy Trails of the Wild, Wild West For more than three decades, the western genre dominated what we saw on the silver screen. We grew up with western movie stars like John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Audie Murphy, Randolph Scott and many more. Western actor Bob Steele was born Robert Adrian Bradbury on January 23, 1907 in Portland, Oregon, into a vaudeville family. After about ten years of touring, the family settled in Hollywood, California, where his father soon found work in the movies, first as an actor and later as a director. Bradbury actually directed John Wayne in more westerns than any other director, albeit low-budget ones. By 1920, Robert Bradbury hired his son Bob and Bob's twin brother, Bill (1907–1971), as juvenile leads for a series of adventure movies titled The Adventures of Bob and Bill. Steele's career began to take off for good in 1927, when he was hired by production company Film Booking Offices of America (FBO) to star in a series of westerns. Renamed Bob Steele at FBO, he soon made a name for himself by working for almost every film studio, including Monogram, Supreme, Tiffany, Syndicate, Republic (including several films of the Three Mesquiteers series) and Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) (including the initial films of their "Billy the Kid" series), plus he had a role in an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men in 1939.
