The dramatic landscape of Ilkley with its panoramic views of the surrounding countryside provide a wonderful setting for the elegant spa town. The town of Ilkley stands in the shadow of the famous Cow and Calf Rocks in the Wharfe Valley, at the southern end of the Yorkshire Dales. According to local legend, the Calf was split from the Cow when the giant Rombald was fleeing an enemy, and stamped on the rock as he leapt across the valley. The enemy, it is rumored, was his angry wife. She dropped the stones held in her skirt to form the local rock formation, The Skirtful of Stones. Scholars Place provides a superb vantage point for views across Ilkley and its stunning and diverse landscapes. Priestley Court even enjoys a unique roof top terrace with panoramic views over the Cow and Calf Rocks and surrounding hills. If it’s a view from the window you are looking for then Scholars Place is perfect for you. AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER Taking inspiration from Ilkley’s rich history and local literature links the naming of this development was inspired by renowned writers who produced outstanding bodies of work widely recognised by literary scholars around the world. Scholars Place is home to Chesterson Court and Priestley Court named after the iconic writers G.K. Chesterton and J.B. Priestley who took their own inspiration from the Ilkley area and the dramatic beauty of Ilkley Moor. G. K. Chesterton was one of the dominant figures of the London literary scene in the early twentieth century. His first published books were poetry, but today he is best remembered for his fictional work, a mystery series about Father Brown, a Catholic priest and amateur detective. Chesterton was known to escape the bustle of the capital with time spent in Ilkley where he became fond of the rolling moorland that surrounds the town. Born in nearby Bradford and educated at the city’s Belle Vue School, J.B. Priestley has a strong local connection and identification with Ilkley. He became a writer of international significance, a master playwright, an astute social commentator, novelist and essayist. In one of his most famous quotes, Priestley said: “I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.” That’s an inspiring sentiment in keeping with Chesterton Court and Priestley Court, two developments which offer the chance to start a fresh chapter with an exciting new retirement lifestyle. • Blue Plaque Trail 1
TAKE A STROLL WITH THE U3A AND CIVIC SOCIETY ALONG ILKLEY’S BLUE PLAQUE TRAIL If you are looking for a purpose in your lockdown walk through Ilkley, you can do no better than to follow the trail of Ilkley’s blue plaque historic buildings. These are featured in two new talks offered by Ilkley & District U3A and Ilkley Civic Society given by leading local historian, Alex Cockshott. The online Zoom talks, in February and March, will be available to watch on the U3A’s website once they have occurred and are open to the general public. Through this collaboration with the U3A, Ilkley Civic Society hopes to broadcast the talks to a wider audience than those of the two organisations involved, so that everyone living in the town and surrounding area has access to this fascinating local history. Blue plaques were first erected in London in 1867 and are now in most historic towns. The Civic Society is responsible for developing the idea in Ilkley, and the Town Hall plaque was the first to be unveiled in June 2004. Since then, twenty plaques have been erected, the most recent in November 2020 at the Rombalds Apartments, formerly Rombalds Hotel, on Wells Road. The blue plaques celebrate the history of Ilkley and the buildings that have shaped the town. In her talks, Alex takes a walk back in time, to highlight some of the more interesting facts about the history of the buildings and the people who built or lived in them. The first presentation, in February, will look at ten blue plaque sites on a trail from the Town Hall up towards Ilkley Moor.

Dear Members and Prospective Members, What unusual and historic times we are living through at present! This, my first Introduction in our annual Programme of Interest Groups, is being written under COVID-19 lockdown conditions amidst great uncertainty about both the timing of lifting of restrictions and the format such lifting might take. Our Programme Planning Team have been very active throughout and we are aiming to resume our activities as soon as we get Government permission, it is deemed safe to resume group meetings, and individual Group Leaders are comfortable about re-starting their sessions. Because of the COVID-19 uncertainties, there may well have to be flexibility in how we re- start our activities; this Programme is our guide to what we hope to offer but any changes will be made continuously to our website so that current information will always be available there. You can check it out via our new, shorter website address https://ilkleyu3a.org/ As the U3A is all about learning together and sharing our experiences and helping to make things work, this Programme is offering you an excellent opportunity to try something new and meet new people, and make potential new friends. So do take time to browse through this Programme and seek out such opportunities and be brave enough to experiment with something new; you never know what you might enjoy until you try it. Thanks must go to all our Group Leaders who put in lots of time and energy to share their enthusiasms and knowledge with their Interest Groups and special thanks to all the Programme Planning Team, under Mary Podesta’s leadership; Sue Butler, Pam Lamming and Eric Craigie who have all worked very hard to make this very varied Programme possible.
