Progress

A message from the Leader of Bradford Council Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe

International Women’s Day is held annually to celebrate the achievements of women and this year it is even more poignant as we mark the centenary of women’s suffrage. The suffragette movement brought the women’s vote to worldwide attention and the women in the Bradford district played an incredibly significant role. It is important that as part of our celebrations this year we take time to remember this fascinating period of history to educate younger generations so they can fully appreciate the bravery of these pioneering women who won us the democratic rights we enjoy today. The theme this year is ‘Press for Progress’. There has never been a more important time for us to press forward and progress gender parity. We have a wide variety of events planned in Bradford designed to inspire us and to bring communities together, encouraging us to think, act and Press for Progress.

2018 marks a series of important anniversaries that have helped to shape democracy in the UK. Bradford Council and partners are keen to support community interventions throughout the year to celebrate the laws and events that ensured that everyone now has the right to vote on the same basis. Suffrage to Citizen Programme in Bradford and wider district will mark the centenary of 100 years since women gained right to vote. The programme will celebrate, empower and encourage women to take an active role in public life. The year-long programme will help us to celebrate the achievements of Bradford women to date but also enable us to deliver focussed activity to address gender equality which remains a significant challenge, one that is hindering potential competitiveness, growth and prosperity. Key historical dates to note:

6 February 1918 The Representation of the People Act is passed on 6 February giving women the vote provided they are aged over 30 and either they, or their husband, meet a property qualification

21 November 1918 The Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act is passed on 21 November allowing women to stand for Parliament

14 December 1918 Women vote in a general election for the first time on 14 December with 8.5 million women eligible.
