    A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE: THE LEGACIES OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AIR TRAINING PLAN IN CANADA'S PRAIRIE PROVINCES by Allan Newell B.A. University of British Columbia, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUGUST 2007 © Allan Newell, 2007 ABSTRACT The establishment of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) saw the creation of more than one hundred air training schools across the country. In the West, the wide-open spaces facilitated many of these sites, and a sophisticated network of airfields sprang up across the prairies almost overnight. The substantial and enduring impact of the BCATP's airfields and schools in the Canadian West is curiously overlooked by historians, who (for the most part) often focus on the Plan's overall operation at the expense of its lasting influence. The construction of the BCATP sites prompted extensive modernisation of the existing infrastructure in many of the small communities selected for schools. Moreover, the vast sums of money poured into the region and the tens of thousands of Commonwealth airmen who came to train at the airfields had a significant and long-term cultural and economic impact on the region. Along with improved infrastructure, the BCATP brought a new cosmopolitanism and a strong regional affinity for the Air Force. More importantly, the Plan influenced the perceptions and perceived roles of women in the prairies and has had an enduring effect on the Canadian women's movement. In the postwar years, the demographics of the prairies shifted as thousands of BCATP alumni returned to take-up residence in the region they had trained in, while at the same time Canadian war brides departed to be with their new husbands abroad.

An airfield used by pilots in the Calgary area was located near Bowness Park, 10 k west of the city. A new airfield was built on the Banff Coach Road, on a bluff overlooking the Bow River.

It traces how airports in major Canadian cities evolved into mass transport hubs between the 1950s and 1980s and also materialized as complex technical systems that connected aviation to wider contemporary issues. During this period these airports assumed a dual role, operating in the background to help move people and planes and emerging at key times to occupy public consciousness. Historical changes there can thus help explain how airports grew increasingly visible as fixed, but active, modern infrastructure that both facilitated jet age mobility and were deeply embedded in the postwar order. This dissertation links the transformation of major airports to the rise of mass air travel, postwar change, and federal stewardship. Aviation’s rapid growth and technological advances beginning in the 1950s invariably transformed how these airports looked, worked, and were experienced by different groups of people. Various central developments in postwar Canada beyond aviation also migrated to these airports and made them more visible as public infrastructure that were both imagined in the national ii sphere and part of globalization. Moreover, airports were federally operated until the early 1990s and thus a state infrastructure project.

    OLD TOWN Heritage Walking Tour of Yellowknife Northwest Territories Introduction The first walking tour guide of Old Town was published in 1987. This 2004 edition is revised to reflect changes in the city. A companion guide published in 2002 covers the New Town area of Yellowknife – the dominant center of activity since the post- WWII boom ushered in modern expansion. The City’s roots and pioneer charm, however, rest in the waterfront streets and structures of the Old Town. On the center pages of this guide is a map for the walking tour. Each consecutively numbered site, street or building in the text is shown on the map. Italicized sub-headings in the text describe the general location or direction of the route. A symbol indicates the site has a descriptive plaque; a symbol indicates the site is one of the City’s designated Heritage Sites. Information on these sites is available on the Canadian Register of Historic Places data base at www.historicplaces.ca You can easily take this tour or the one described in the New Town guide in sections or together – take as much time as you wish for a stroll through our City’s heritage. A polished speaker, Jacquie started her broadcast career with CKWS Radio in Kingston, where she hosted a daily talk show. She is a graduate of York University, with a Degree in Geography, which she put to good use as the local weather reporter. Jacquie later returned to her native Toronto to join CFTO TV News. Ten she was an anchor for CTV’s Canada AM and a reporter for CFTO News. She gained an Speaker Jacquie Perrin ACTRA Award for her interviewing skills on private radio.
