A Gift to the Parish of Christ Church, Andover from the Dorans

Earlier this year Michael and Carol Doran made a gift to the Parish of Christ Church of 250 paintings, most all of which are watercolors. These paintings, created by Mr. Doran between 2004 and 2019, consist of landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and pieces done from his imagination. They were given with the intent that the sale of them would generate financial support for the church’s commu- nity outreach and provide some inspiration and pleasure to those who appreciate his art. Mr. Doran is a retired architect who has been painting in the watercolor medium for about 60 years.

A committee was formed to catalogue the pieces, make them accessible for purchase and make suggestions to the Vestry on how they might be exhibited and sold. On September 8 the Vestry ap- proved the Committee’s plan to sell the paintings, which is described on page 6. All the money raised will support Community Outreach, which is described in detail starting on page 28. The fundraiser starts on October 8 and runs through November 5, or until all the paintings are sold, whichever comes first.

This book, Book One, contains 45 selections of his works featuring landscapes and cityscapes of Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island. Most are framed or matted. Some are unmatted. The di- mensions and other details are shown in the table of contents and underneath each image. We hope to produce at a later time a similar PDF book, Book Two, of paintings from his travels abroad, includ- ing scenes from England, France and several other European countries.

In addition to this fundraiser, the Christ Church Thrift Shop, located at 10 Park Street in down- town Andover, will be selling selected slightly lower priced works from Mr. Doran’s donated art- work, starting on October 12 and running several months. The proceeds from the sale of those paint- ings will also support the church’s community outreach programs.

Whether you intend to buy a painting or not (and we hope you do), please enjoy the beauty of Michael Doran’s paintings through this book and appreciate Michael and Carol’s generosity by giv- ing a donation to this fundraiser in their honor.

Michael Doran

Michael Doran grew up in London and became a licensed architect after his studies at North London University. He came to the United States in 1957, working for an architecture firm in New York City. His architectural position there involved the restoration of historic projects for the Met- ropolitan Museum. Mr. Doran moved to Rochester, New York where he practiced for over 40 years, mainly involved in institutional, educational and church related projects. He designed a regional headquarters for Allstate Insurance, a complete remodeling and updating of the Eastman School of Music and a large parking garage to serve the Cultural District in downtown Rochester. His projects were awarded citations by the American Institute of Architects.

Mr. Doran took up watercolor painting early in life because it interested him and because it was “fast, easy and cheap” unlike oil painting or photography, but his long and successful career in architecture took up most of his artistic talent leaving little time to paint. After he retired as a full time architect he and his family moved in 2000 to Alexandria, Virginia where he began revisiting his interest in the watercolor medium while his wife, Carol, taught at the Virginia Seminary. He joined The Art League and started watercolor classes. After a long career of drawing and designing he found painting a good challenge. He exhibited in the Art League’s gallery and received various awards.

In 2006 he and Carol moved to North Andover, Massachusetts. He became active at the New- buryport Art Association where again he exhibited and won awards for his work. Indeed, many of the pieces featured in this publication are from these two towns. His subjects include townscapes, landscapes, architecture, portraits and whimsical renderings. Mr. Doran has created over 400 water- colors and many belong to collectors, family and friends throughout the Northeast. Reproductions of his painting of St. Augustine Church in Andover are displayed in many funeral homes throughout the Merrimack Valley. His watercolor pieces generally sell from $50 to $500, or more.

Since moving to the area, Michael, a life long Catholic, joined St. Augustine’s Church in Ando- ver and Carol joined Christ Church. Michael has been a familiar face at Christ Church concerts and choir events. His painting of Christ Church was purchased by Rosalyn Wood at our silent audtion in 2012 (see last page). An accomplished church musician and published composer (Oxford University Press), Carol has been an active member at Christ Church and has served as one of our substitute organists and choir directors. Her hymns, choral compositions and organ pieces have been featured in our services and musical programs. She has also been a volunteer at Esperanza Academy in Law- rence, where she taught music. The Dorans are pleased that the money raised from the gifts of these paintings will support Christ Church’s Community Outreach programs. 6 The Watercolors of Michael Doran Fundraiser Book One: Landscapes and Cityscapes of Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island

Watercolor depends on transparency, light shining through color to white paper. Oil and acrylic paints are opaque. Watercolor needs to stay wet so that colors can be moved around and blended to create effect. The subjects to paint are limitless: land- scape, buildings, still life, portraits, abstracts, cartoons and wild ideas. Watercolor is a fast technique which has to be kept moving and wet; however, details can be added over a dry painting to give definition. One can work from photographs, models, in plein aire or completely out of one’s head to find a result. As one’s lover, watercolor can be charming, challenging, colorful, unforgiving, fun, beautiful or disastrous!
