BACK FOR THE SMBC SINGAPORE OPEN!

FAN FAVOURITE ADAM SCOTT will make his much awaited return to the SMBC Singapore Open next year and bid to lift the trophy for a fourth time. The US$1 million tournament will be played Adam Scott from 19 to 22 January 2017 on The Serapong, where the Australian claimed the tournament a record three times in 2005, 2006 and 2010.

Scott joins Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who will make his maiden appearance in the Singapore showcase. It was in 2012 that Scott last played in the tournament where he again showed his liking for the Serapong layout fi nishing in fi fth place.“It is hard to believe it has been 11 years since I fi rst played in and won the Singapore Open,” said 36-year-old Scott. “It was also the fi rst time I had won a national Open and it meant a great deal to me. I am looking forward to playing The Serapong again. It will certainly feel like a homecoming of sorts.”

Scott’s biggest win to date is the 2013 US Masters, when he became the fi rst Australian to claim the title. He is a 13-time winner on the US PGA Tour and has triumphed on 10 occasions in Europe. Other signifi cant wins include the 2004 Players Championship, the 2011 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and more recently the 2016 WGC-Cadillac Championship. He has also claimed all three of Australia’s hallowed titles, including the Emirates Australian Open in 2009.

“This is fantastic news for the SMBC Singapore Open,” said Mr Takeshi Kunibe, President and CEO, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. “I know everyone has been waiting for Adam Scott to return as he has a huge following in Singapore after three fi ne victories. With Sergio Garcia competing as well, we are all in for a real golfi ng spectacle.”

The SMBC Singapore Open is jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Organisation, and is the opening event of the season on both circuits.

Korean Younghan Song took the title in January this year, beating then world number one Jordan Spieth from the United States by a stroke. Next year marks the 51st staging of Singapore’s

THE SERAPONG Excessive play has taken its toll on our award-winning Serapong. The Agronomy team has been working hard and clocking in overtime to keep it together. The traffi c patterns on the cart path edges, divots in the fairways, ball marks on the greens and of course heavy bunker usage have never been so overwhelming.

Our coring programme’s been in use every other week for the past three months. On every other Sunday evening, the team assembles and deploys our “Pro Core aerifi er” machines to solid -tine greens late into the night. This is needed to help relieve compaction as no turf surface is immune to compaction problems.

The excessive play we currently experience promotes higher compaction, and this leads to the thinning of playing surfaces and algae development. Aggressive coring is then necessary to help insure that needed oxygen exchange takes place to promote growth within the plants’ root system.

DIVOT REPAIR Please continue to fi ll divots. I know some of us travel to many Renovation works began on 1 August at the Pyramid halfway house and will be parts of the world and see programes where sanding in divots is completed in early November 2016 not required. But allow me to assure you that sanding in divots is absolutely needed for the reproductive development of warm season grasses such as ours.

The use of sand to fi ll divots also helps create a smoother surface – as sand covers the damaged roots and acts as a moisture holding agent for the plant to recover. Lastly, the sand encourages new growth by covering the damaged plant and the plant will recover in half the time (faster) than using no sand at all. Thank you for doing your part. Please feel free to fi ll other divots, fi ll all the divots you can.

USEFUL TIPS PITCH MARKS / BALL MARKS when repaired as they occur will naturally recover within the next 24 hours. Ball marks when left for a few hours or until the next morning (when the Agronomy team checks the green A new waterproofi ng layer has been installed at the base of the Tanjong Cina Pond and makes repairs prior to mowing) can and will take (new hole 17 island green) up to a week to recover.

RAKING BUNKERS is not an option, it is required by the Rules of Golf and a breach of etiquette. The player behind you or playing into an un-raked bunker experiences an improper lie if their ball is caught in a footprint.

It is OUR golf course. The Agronomy team will continue to work tirelessly to promote the best conditions possible, but it is the players’ responsibility to aid in the care of the course when playing.

Thank you in advance for assisting in doing your part, and in helping others who may have overlooked theirs.

19 MANAGING GOLF LONG SERVICE AWARDS

IN FOR THE LONG HAUL Sentosa Golf Club is pleased to announce the recipients of our long-service awards. These dedicated men and women come from all ‘walks of working life’ at SGC and every one of them plays a role in the successful running of the Club. Here’s wishing them many more fulfi lling years with us!

APRIL CHAN (Banquet Sales) – 10 YEARS Being a recipient of this long-service award makes me feel antique. But jokes aside, I was previously from the hotel industry and it was definitely more stressful as compared to Sentosa. I believe that an overly stressful environment does not produce productive employees. Over here, there is always that element of fun which takes the stress away. I’m glad Sentosa manages to balance fun and work, allowing us to achieve more. One thing I love about my job is handling difficult customers and successfully winning them over. I believe that there isn’t a problem too tough to solve. Instead, I see these as opportunities to push myself. These 10 years in SGC have indeed been a rollercoaster ride. Despite being part a small sales team of three, we are very closely knit and everyone here feels like family. I especially love how Sentosa is very family-oriented and welcoming. It was this same warm and supportive environment that made my eldest daughter convert from a part-time to a full-time Sentosa staff here as well.

SHARON ENG (F&B) – 20 YEARS Sentosa is just like my second home – I’ve watched her grow and develop from a kampung to what she is today. Although this is my 21st year working for SGC, I have actually worked here for more than 30 years. I first came in when I was 18 years old, and prior to the start of Golfers’ Terrace, I used to work with an external catering provider here. Back then, there was only the Tanjong Course and it was not as demanding. I remember taking the bumboat, and subsequently the ferry, to work every day. Although many things have changed over the decades, some things still remain the same – the great air and lovely company. I’m glad to have found a close company of colleagues who have helped make my journey here even better. I am really excited about and anticipating the opening of the New Tanjong.

KHALID BIN KADER (Golf Agronomy) – 30 YEARS My journey at Sentosa Golf Club has been a fulfilling and enriching one. I first started working at SGC as a caddy boy when I was only 14 or 15 years old. While I was a caddy boy, a veteran colleague invited me to join golf maintenance and told me that I could learn more there. And there I was lucky to have colleagues like Masturi who taught me how to mow the greens. Subsequently, I picked up irrigation – the part I love most about my job. I love it the most as I feel that irrigation is the most crucial in terms of course maintenance. Without water, the grass cannot grow. Looking back, I think that I’ve grown as a person and I’m thankful that I have learnt so much at SGC. I’m really happy working here as most of my friends have also been here for a long time. I’m also very thankful for my extremely encouraging and supportive colleagues who have contributed to who I am today. I’m also very proud that The Serapong, the course that I’ve taken care of since its start, has become the 58th Greatest Golf Course in the World. I’m really excited about the opening of the New Tanjong and I hope the new course can aspire towards becoming at least the 50th Greatest Golf Course in the World.
