RED-DY, WILLING AND ABLE!

The God of Fortune refl ecting the relaxed, happy mood of the participants who wore red specially for the festive season’s game

ALL THINGS RED! Members donned their brightest colours to welcome the auspicious Year of the Monkey and matched it with happy smiles for the annual Lunar New Year Ang Pow Game, which is an important tradition at Sentosa Golf Club. Starting the event with a bang was a raucous lion dance performance to drive any ill luck away. Of course there was the God of Fortune making his rounds at the Clubhouse to make sure good luck, wealth and prosperity comes your way all year round. As if that were not enough, another promise of good fortune came that evening with the tossing of the customary raw fish salad at the lo-hei dinner after the game – the culmination of a lovely day on the golf course and at the Club! LET’S GIVE A TOSS! From left: Ms Lily Chua, Mr & Mrs Koji Inoue, Mr Raymond Lau, Departing from the medal format of past years, this year’s game Mdm Hazel Loh, Mr & Mrs Lee Hock Seng and Mr Andrew Ong was a more social affair, with members forming teams for the Scramble format. There was also a special ‘Beat the Pro’ game on Serapong’s Par 3, Hole 2 to raise funds for rising golfing star Koh Sock Hwee, whom SGC has taken under our wing. Sock, as she is fondly known to members, had qualified for the HSBC Women’s Champions and had taken the brave decision to turn professional. So you can imagine her delight – and eternal gratitude – when members raised a whopping $11,150 to help her kick-start her professional career. A further $4,000 for Sock was raised through a lively auction of a tour bag autographed by newly minted SMBC Singapore Open Champion Younghan Song. Getting the lucky bidder to part with his money for a good cause was none other than SGC President PRETTY SENORITAS (from left): Mdm Alison Sun, Mrs Caroline Ong, Mdm Anna Ng, Low Teo Ping who proved to be a most persuasive ‘auctioneer’. MEET THE MEDAL OF MEDALS CHAMPS Faced with tough golf conditions on account of two major tournaments being played at SGC, members competing in the Captain’s Cup and Lady Captain’s Cup found it more daunting than usual. But Mdm Anna Ng and Mr Kenneth Teo overcame the obstacles to emerge winners. Well done!

CAPTAIN’S CUP WINNER MR KENNETH TEO FORE!: Congratulations on winning the Captain's Cup! Was it your fi rst time?

Mr Kenneth Teo: I fi rst won this competition in 2008 when I was quite a high handicapper. It is really an honour to win it a second time with my 6 handicap. The competition took a lot out of me and I was really tired and mentally exhausted after the game so I celebrated by having a good night's rest.

FORE!: In a nutshell, could you describe the week before and during the tournament.

KT: I did not change my routine the week before the competition. At that time, SGC's driving range was under renovation so I did not practise as much as I wished to. Surprisingly, on the day of the tournament, I was actually feeling rather calm. The fact that I could keep a level head helped me play my best golf.

FORE!: Was there a key shot during the tournament that got your momentum going?

KT: The tournament was quite a roller coaster ride for me. I had two low points in my game when I picked up a double bogey on hole 5 and a triple bogey on hole 13, but I recovered with 5 birdies including back-to-back birdies on my fi nal two holes, so that was really exciting. I think what really got me going wasn't so much a key shot but the high level of competition on my fl ight. It really pushed me to get good shots.

FORE!: What’s the next golf tournament you’re preparing for?

KT: I do not have any plans to participate in other golf events because of school and other commitments. I'm currently doing my fi nal year at NUS (Accountancy). I do hope to make new friends as I play with other members and guests in future games.

FORE!: Who introduced you to the game?

KT: My dad, when I was 12. He made sure that I was properly trained under a golf pro and did not try to teach me the game himself. My dad always invites me to join him for weekend golf and has been consistently patient and encouraging. LADY CAPTAIN’S CUP WINNER MDM ANNA NG FORE!: Congratulations on winning the Lady Captain’s Cup! Was it your fi rst time winning this event?

Mdm Anna Ng: It's my fi rst time taking part, and I did not expect to win. I just went in to play and enjoy the game.

FORE!: How did you prepare for it mentally and physically? Did you change any aspect of your game?

Mdm Ng: I worked out at the gym and went to the spa. A professional golfer friend of mine tweaked my swing to improve my driving distance. That helped a lot especially on playing Serapong.

FORE!: How did the competition go for you? What do you consider the highs and lows of your game?

Mdm Ng: On the day of competition we were blessed with good weather; it was not too hot. I was also paired with friendly fl ightmates so I was able to relax and strike the ball well.

FORE!: What does your golfi ng schedule look like for the rest of the year? Will you be taking part in another tournament anytime soon?

Mdm Ng: I am a social player. I just play to enjoy the game with good company. I also travel regularly with my close friend friends to play golf, wine and dine.

“I enjoyed watching the past Barclays Singapore Open when I was a guest. The warm hospitality SGC offered to members and their guests then was so impressive that I looked forward to becoming a member of SGC. Without any hesitation, I purchased an SGC membership and I am a contented member now who frequents the Club so much that it’s like a second home to me. “I feel extremely privileged to be a member as we are always pampered by the staff. 21 THE ACCIDENTAL TRANSLATOR

SGC member Mr Ju Hong Seo shares how he unexpectedly helped to save the day for the reigning champion of this year’s SMBC Singapore Singapore Open.

THE DAY HE RETURNED from Korea, Mr Ju Hong Seo came straight “We’ve got a problem,” said the organisers, “if Song wins, we’ve to The Serapong to watch the fi nal round of the SMBC Singapore got no one on the team who can translate for him.” In quiet Open. A fan of Jordan Spieth, he had hoped to catch the action by desperation, they turned to the Club and Mr Ju was immediately following him during his round. identifi ed as the ideal candidate as a translator. He gamely took on the challenge and took on his new role seriously. But little did he know that he would be quickly thrust out of the spectator’s seat and into the spotlight. To make sure he was ready for the cameras at anytime, he was prepared to remain in the Members’ Suite the entire Sunday; Meanwhile, young contender Younghan Song, a relatively unknown unfortunately the game was called off due to inclement weather. from Korea, was playing the game of his career, holding his own at the top of the leaderboard and aptly fending off the eager But true to his word, there he was at Serapong Course, bright challenge of world number one Jordan Spieth and other pre- and early that Monday morning to witness the exciting fi nish that tournament hopefuls. The only setback: He spoke no English. ensued. His reward: Sharing the limelight with a champion!

Mr Ju Hong Seo translating for the champion Song Younghan; Korean members Mrs Vivian Kim Aye Kyung (in pink) and Mdm Yeon Jin Hee were out in force to support their hero.

So, Mr Ju, how did you feel when approached to be the translator for Younghan Song? I was both excited and nervous – excited because it would be a precious once-in-a lifetime experience to be given the honour and getting so close to the SMBC Singapore Open Champion. I was also feeling very nervous because it was my fi rst time translating in public. I was worried that my tongue would get twisted.

Were you nervous at the Monday prize presentation ceremony? Yes, initially. When all eyes and cameras were focusing on me, I was feeling very nervous as you can tell from my brief translations at the start. I had never expected to be standing next to the champion receiving so much media attention. But after a short while, I began to warm up to the role – and the limelight. I gained confi dence after that.

Did you encounter any problems during the translation? Mr Song’s replies in Korean were rather long. But knowing Serapong Course well as a golfer helped me immensely, I understood exactly what Song encountered and could summarise his feelings and challenges in a clear and concise manner.

Tell us about the post-event press conference. I felt on top of the world as I was seated just next to the champion during the interview. At the same time, I felt a little uncomfortable when the reporters diverted their attention to me (to get the answers). At the press conference, I was both mentally and physically prepared to offer perfect translations. I could say that I did well and did the champion proud.

Did you enjoy the role as a translator? I was overjoyed and thankful to SGC for giving me the opportunity. After a fair bit of contact, I can comfortably say that Mr Song and I have become friends and in fact he promised me a meal when I return to Korea soon. This comes as a big surprise as I never expected to be friends with the golf champion of the SMBC Singapore Open. I am extremely fortunate and my friends are so envious. I’ll happily volunteer to be a translator again if there is a need next year.
