An original system created in the Near East between the second/eighth and the fourth/tenth centuries due to the fragmentation of the squinche, but it was in the fourth/eleventh century when it turned into a basic element, not only all along the Islamic territory but also in the Islamic vocabulary. However, the origin and shape of muqarnas has not been thoroughly considered by Historiography. This research tries to prove the importance of Sasanian Art in the aesthetics creation of muqarnas. Resumen: La arquitectura islámica presenta un mecanismo de decoración tridimensional conocido como decoración de muqarnas. Un sistema novedoso creado en el Próximo Oriente entre los siglos II/VIII y IV/X a partir de la fragmentación de la trompa de esquina, y que en el siglo XI se extendió por toda la geografía del Islam para formar parte del vocabulario del arte islámico. A pesar de su importancia y amplio desarrollo, la historiografía no se ha detenido especialmente en el origen formal de la decoración de muqarnas y por ello, este estudio pone de manifiesto la influencia del arte sasánida en su concepción estética durante el Califato ʿabbāssí. -

This concept is also reflected in Persian ate miniature painting where buildings are enclosed by a light fence or a wall. In some cases, especially house gardens, the wall looks much stronger, probably to protect the security of the enclosed area. The organic arrangement of natural elements in the garden associated with the pavilion, however, is in contradiction to the presence of the enclosure. It can be said that in numerous paintings, water is not enclosed anymore, but it is the building (and the paved area close to it) that is covered by a transparent barrier or a well. Traditional Iranian towns highly appreciate the sense of privacy in their old building. For centuries, Iranian houses were divided into two parts “Inside” and “outside”, in which family members solely used the first part while guests used the latter as well. Despite the importance of privacy in traditional Iranian culture, Iranian people were not isolated, and social contacts had an importance. -
What Is Islamic Art?
What is Islamic art? What do we actually mean by Islamic art? A central feature of Islamic art is its emphasis on crasmanship. Creating a high quality object – something that is a delight to behold – is much more important than producing something new and innovative. Another characteristic of Islamic art is that it does not necessarily tell us anything about the artist’s personal ideas or feelings. Islamic artists and crasmen oen focus on a long, tried-and-true tradition. What is most important is creating something beautiful and well made, oen something with a practical use. In other words, Islamic art largely aims at beautifying everyday life and making utilitarian objects into works of art. en what does “Islamic” have to do with it? At the David Collection, we generally define Islamic art as works of art produced in the part of the world where the religion of Islam has played a dominant role for a long period of time. ey do not necessarily have to be works of art made by or for Muslims. e artists might also be followers of another religion, for example Christians or Jews. And the message conveyed by their art does not have to directly reflect the religion of Islam. It can also have a purely secular character. DURING THE GUIDED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM: When pupils are shown around the museum, the guide will focus on a number of common features of Islamic art: vegetal ornamentation, geometric patterns, calligraphy, and the stylized depiction of reality. Historical aspects will also be dealt with and, depending on the work of art, an object’s function and relevant cultural and historical aspects will be discussed. -

This paper focuses on the particular problem of applying geometric patterns on curved stone surfaces and explores possible technical application scenarios for a select group of 13th century Anatolian patterns. We illustrate hypothetical processes of how to apply three patterns on three different types of curved surfaces and discuss the relation between the surface geometry and the tools. Our main motivation is to shed light on how the geometric construction of the designs and the making of these patterns correlate. Introduction Geometric patterns consisting of polygons, stars and lines were used as ornaments on monumental building façades in medieval Anatolia, also known as the Seljuk period. The style was widely common throughout the larger region at the time. The question of how these intricate designs were constructed geometrically has drawn the attention of many interdisciplinary studies [1][2][3][4]. However, only a few of these studies focus on how abstract patterns were transformed into the material things that they are whether carved into stone, tiled in brick or ceramic, or arranged in wood using special crafting techniques [5]. Materials, tools and all other components of the making process such as the craftsman’s hand movements are all factors in the formation of the shapes. -

The main discourse on Islamic art in the western academia primarily views Islamic art through the lens of art history and sociology of art. Islamic art is considered as sacred in Islamic civilisation and culture, and derives its sanctity from the Quran as the fountain from which it has emanated, which Muslims consider to be the Word of God, much like Christ is the Word of God in Christianity. The Quran has played a formative role in shaping the trinity of sacred Islamic art which is Quranic recitation, calligraphy and architecture. However, another approach which not only is viable but can be considered of great importance to the study of Islamic art, is the employment and utilisation of principles of Islamic philosophy and Sufism which were the pillars of the intellectual milieu in which a given work of art is produced. The application of such principles allows a more comprehensive and detailed interpretation of a work of art. In this paper, the primary Islamic philosophy and sufi doctrines that will be dis- cussed are the concepts of imagination, colour, and calligraphy and examples of their applica- tion in the khānqāh and shrine ensemble of Shaykh Ṣafi al-Din Ardabīlī in Ardabil, Iran. Book of Islamic Arts Overview There Is Much Diversity Within Islamic Culture
Book of Islamic Arts Overview There is much diversity within Islamic culture. During this unit, students will learn about several significant forms of Islamic art (mosque architecture, geometric/arabesque design, and calligraphy) by completing a children’s book that is missing important information or images. The book is divided up into 5 class sessions with an optional 6th session to wrap up missing sections or create a cover. Through the exploration, students will learn that Islamic art around the world can include many different concepts, and they will apply new knowledge through note-taking, graphic organizers, drawing, calligraphy, and optional mosaic portions of the book. When finished, each student will have a completed book that reviews the arts covered in the unit and celebrates the diversity of Muslim culture around the world. Grade 5 Subject Visual Arts Essential Standards • 5.V.2.2 - Use ideas and imagery from the global environment as sources for creating art. • 5.V.3.3 - Create art using the processes of drawing, painting, weaving, printing, stitchery, collage, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, and current technology. • 5.CX.1 - Understand the global, historical, societal, and cultural contexts of the visual arts. Essential Questions • How do pictures help to tell a story? • How do Muslim artists reflect their local culture through the arts? • What can we learn about Islamic culture from the diversity of Islamic arts? • Why is it important to learn about cultures other than our own? Materials • Copies of the children’s book for each student (attached). The student book is 10 pages long and can be printed on regular copy paper, or on stronger paper like Bristol or cardstock if the teacher intends to use paint. -

Mughal miniatures share these basic characteristics, but they also incorporate interesting innovations. Many of these deviations results from the fact that European prints and art objects had been available in India since the establishment of new trading colonies along the western coast in the sixteenth century. Mughal artists thus added to traditional Persian and Islamic forms by including European techniques such as shading and at- mospheric perspective. It is interesting to note that Eu- ropean artists were likewise interested in Mughal paint- ing—the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn collected and copied such works, as did later artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and William Morris. These images continued to interest westerners in the Victorian era, during the period of Art Nouveau, and even today. Akbar maintained an imperial studio where more than a hundred artists illustrated classical Persian literary texts, as well as the Mahabharata, the great Hindu epic that the emperor had translated into Persian from its original Sanskrit. Akbar also sponsored various books describing his own good deeds and those of his ancestors. Such books were expansive—some were five hundred pages long, with more than a hundred miniature paintings illustrat- portrait of the emperor shahjahan, enthroned, ing the text. In this case the main purpose of the hilya as a work of calligraphy and illumination is to aesthetically evoke the physical appearance and moral character of the Prophet Muhammad. Moreover, the complex symbolism of the hilya as an expression of prophetic glory also reflects the cosmological thought of the Ottoman community. The subject of this article is to examine the classical hilya design attributed to the famous Ottoman calligrapher Hâfiz Osman in the context of calligraphy-illumination interaction and number symbolism. Examining classical examples of Turkish-Islamic arts of the book, we will try to observe that the conventional hilya design passed through various stages during the process of its formation. In this case the theoretical roots of Hâfiz Osman’s hilya form and the probability of his inspiration by the aesthetic designs of the previous periods will be examined through the decorative manuscripts in religious and non- religious topics. -
Historical and Scientific Analysis of Iranian Illuminated Manuscripts And
Mandana Barkeshli1 The objective of the present research was to identify the materials Historical and Scientific and techniques used in Persian Analysis of Iranian illuminated manuscripts and Illuminated Manuscripts miniature paintings and its major 2 significance compared to Indo- and Miniature Paintings Iranian and Mughal paintings. The research methodology was based on three approaches. The first consiste of a series of interviews carried out with the artists from Iran and India. The traditional Iranian masters such as: Saniʿei, Jazizadeh, Takestani, Harati were among these artists. The second method was historical analysis, by collecting the Persian historical documents and treatises on the recipes and techniques from Timurid, Safavid, and Qajar periods. During the historical survey the historic documents, including over 30 historical treatises (such as Golzār-e safā, Ādāb ol-mashq, Resāle dar bayān-e khatt-e morakkab va hall-e alvān, Favāyed ol-khotut), were collected and studied.3 These sources are related to the materials used in the art of bookmaking and painting from the Timurid to the Qajar period, such as different techniques of making dyes for paper colouring, pigments and dyes used as paint, binding mediums, sizing materials, burnishing techniques, and so on.
