This is in keeping with George Birkbeck’s vision when he created Birkbeck College to serve the educational needs of working people. We have always encouraged applications from students without traditional qualifications. If higher education is to appeal to the changing educational, cultural, personal and career needs of adults, it needs to become more flexible and accessible without losing academic excellence. Students with vocational qualifications often have the skills to succeed at university, but the opportunities to progress have been denied to them. A university education can change lives; it creates more choice, builds confidence, helps people reach their full potential and can lead to bigger salaries. Linking London is doing excellent work to ensure that students with vocational qualifications have the chance to access all the advantages that a university education offers.” Professor David Latchman, Master, Birkbeck, University of London 02 Linking London 2006/2009 Linking London 2006/2009 03 04 Linking London 2006/2009 3 Years since Linking London was established 25 New courses developed 35 Partners in the Linking London Network 47 Development Projects funded 56 Progression Agreements signed, many more under development 69 Percent of FECs have signed one or more Progression Agreement with partner organisations 91 Different signatories on our Progression Agreements Linking London Key Numbers 109 Staff Development events held 400 Fulltime Additional Student Numbers (ASNs) funded 560 Learners funded through ASN funding 1,110 Learners per year expected to benefit from Progression Agreements brokered by Linking London 1,300 Contacts on Linking London’s dynamic database 1,710 Staff have attended a Linking London event 25,000 Visits to the Information, Advice and Guidance section of www.linkinglondon.ac.uk 50,000 Pounds of widening participation money distributed 65,000 Pounds of Capital Investment Funding distributed 90,000 Visits to www.linkinglondon.ac.uk 575,000 Pounds of Development Funds allocated 1,300,000 Pounds of ASN funding distributed Linking London 2006/2009 05 This Document “In FE and HE it’s important we are supported by an organisation dedicated to pure progression… We’ve got so much else to deal with, it is very difficult to do the progression work without a middleperson like Linking London…They are instrumental and if they go there will be a gap…It will be harder for FE to work with HE on the level we’ve been working at.” Taken from Formative Evaluation Report, Linking London Lifelong Learning Network May 2009, ECOTEC All quotes throughout this document are from this source.
