  • 'Racist' Mindset Malaysiakini.Com July 12, 2011 DAP National
DAP takes on Umno over 'racist' mindset Malaysiakini.com July 12, 2011 DAP national secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has lashed out at Umno for allegedly insulting Chinese Malaysians by issuing 'racist and disrespectful' statements. Lim, who is Bagan MP, pointed squarely at Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam, accusing him displaying a "shallow and racist" mindset by insulting the community over the issue of gambling. Mohd Ali had apparently defended Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairperson Mohd Yunos Husin over the latter's comment on the issuance of gambling licences. Mohd Ali had intervened in a current state assembly sitting, saying that Mohd Yunos was merely asserting a fact, as the culture is prevalent among some Chinese. In a statement issued today, Lim criticised Mohd Ali's statement, noting that gambling has never been part of the Chinese culture. "However, because he and the rest of his party are unable to explain why they have to issue gambling licences, they attempt to apportion blame on the Chinese," said Lim, who is Penang chief minister. "Instead of repenting such a controversial and narrow-minded remark, Mohd Ali added that 'as we generally know, the Chinese love to gamble and it's part of their culture'.” Lim urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to take swift and firm action against Mohd Ali (left), saying such "openly racist remarks" should not come from a chief minister. Lim was responding to the suspension of several DAP assemblymen from the Malacca state assembly for insisting that Mohd Ali should retract his remark. Khoo Poay Tiong (Ayer Keroh), Betty Chew (Kota Laksamana), Lim Jack Wong (Bachang) and Tey Kok Kiew (Bandar Hilir) were suspended, following Goh Leong San's (Kesidang) ejection from the House yesterday.

  • Challenge of Free Speech: Asian Values V
THE CHALLENGE OF FREE SPEECH: ASIAN VALUES V. UNFETTERED FREE SPEECH, AN ANALYSIS OF SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA IN THE NEW GLOBAL ORDER "[T]hose that develop their branches as they please, in freedom and apart from each other, grow crooked and twisted." I. INTRODUCTION Limitations on freedom of speech in Singapore and Malaysia have been sharply criticized in the United States and abroad because unfettered speech freedom is considered essential to individual liberty and human dignity of all people regardless of their culture or history. Although Malaysia and Singapore have numerous shortcomings, the U.S. model of free speech may not be desirable for these states. In Malaysia and Singapore, an "Asian value" model has developed that espouses limitations on individual liberty in the name of public order, national security and morality in order to be free from the "Western disease" - namely crime and disorder. Allowing a wider latitude of government criticisms should certainly be encouraged in Malaysia and Singapore; however, allowing all speech unrelated to the government function to have equal protection of political speech is a value that many countries may legitimately choose not to embrace. Critics of speech limitations are quick to point out the need for free speech in a liberal democracy; however, myriad flaws still exist in U.S. court opinions and scholars' theories which are based upon a marketplace of ideas for justifying free speech. A justification based on unfettered political debate may be, in the alternative, a more sound justification for free speech. The leaders and scholars of Malaysia and Singapore point out the flaws in the United States marketplace model, with its inherent bias and lack of ability to be realized outside the town hall meeting from which it developed, while concomitantly ignoring a democratic justification for allowing open political debate in a libertarian model.

  • Sim: I'm Contesting As Independent to Save DAP Malaysiakini.Com April 20, 2013 by Hafiz Yatim
Sim: I'm contesting as Independent to save DAP MalaysiaKini.com April 20, 2013 By Hafiz Yatim Malacca DAP stalwart Sim Tong Him, already defending the Kota Melaka parliamentary seat under the party ticket is also contesting as an Independent for the Kota Laksamana state seat, said he is doing so to save the party. Sim (right) said he was worried that DAP candidate Lai Keun Ban would do badly as the feedback that the Malacca DAP had received indicates that the supporters would not back this candidate. “We have asked Lai to consider pulling out but it seems that he does not want to. Hence, following last night I felt hopeless and have to make the hard decision of also contesting in the Kota Laksamana seat as an Independent. “Kota Laksamana is a DAP stronghold and we do not want to see it being lost. I know there will be repercussions to my decision but I am doing this to salvage the situation. I am prepared to face any repercussions from the party,” said Sim. He wants party supporters to either vote the DAP or him to ensure that it remains in opposition hands and not BN. Hence, the Kota Laksamana state seat sees a three-cornered contest with Sim, former senator and Malacca PPP chief Chiw Tiang Chai and Lai from the DAP. Sim, 65, formerly led Malacca DAP and is a ever popular figure in the state after contesting and defending the Bandar Hilir state seat for several terms before moving to the Kota Melaka parliamentary seat in 2008.
