The new season introduces such topics as Attention, Ability, Strategy, Money and 2. Martin made a comedy CD called "These Are Jokes", which was released via COMEDY CENTRAL Records® in 2006 and his "Trendspotting with Demetri Martin" has been a featured segment on the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" since December 2005. Martin was featured in his own one-hour stand-up special for COMEDY CENTRAL, "Demetri Martin. Person." • This Is the End and Parafictional Persona
“Give Me the Seth Rogen Laugh”: This Is the End and Parafictional Persona BRADLEY J. DIXON In the opening scene of This Is the End (2013), Seth Rogen walks through an airport concourse to pick up his old friend, Jay Baruchel, who has just flown in from Canada for a short stay in Los Angeles. After they meet, share a hug, and walk through the airport to begin what Rogen has planned to be “the best weekend ever,” a paparazzo ambushes the pair with a video camera and a spotlight: PAPARAZZO: Hey Seth Rogen, how’s it going man? So, you, like, always play the same guy in every movie. When are you going to do some real acting, man? ROGEN: OK, thank you… PAPARAZZO: Give me something, give me the Seth Rogen laugh. Rogen gives his signature throaty laugh. PAPARAZZO: Seth Rogen, everybody. (Goldberg and Rogen 00:01:40– 00:01:55) From the very first scene, This Is the End wants its audience to know one thing: Rogen and Baruchel are playing themselves. In the film, as in life, the two actors were childhood friends in Canada, came up in television comedy together in the early 2000s, and moved to Los Angeles shortly after finding fame. Baruchel disliked the decadent Hollywood lifestyle and moved back to the comparatively less glamorous life of a working actor in Canada, while Rogen stayed in Los Angeles and became one of the most recognizable faces in comedy. The opening scenes of This Is the End show the pair reconnecting for the first time in over a year.

  • Subtitling Culturally Determined Expressions in Stand-Up Comedy
Subtitling Culturally Determined Expressions in Stand-Up Comedy from English to Dutch: The Case of Demetri Martin’s The Overthinker (2018) and Live (At the Time) (2015) BA Thesis English Language and Culture, Utrecht University Jackie Joy Gonzalez 6222544 Supervisor: Dr. Gys-Walt van Egdom Second reader: Dr. Onno Kosters January 2021 1. Abstract The translation of humor remains a difficult objective. This pertains particularly to culturally determined expressions. Due to differences between cultures, equivalence in these CDEs is often difficult to obtain. Many theories exist on the translation of humor and subtitling, but there are few specifically related to the subtitling of CDEs in stand-up comedy. This thesis attempts to combine some of these theories, thereby developing a continuum that – if successful – may help predict preferred strategies of translation for CDEs within stand-up comedy. The continuum’s usefulness is tested by comparing its outcomes to the translator’s decisions for two stand-up shows, Demetri Martin’s The Overthinker (2018) and Live (At the Time) (2015). Assumptions made from the results illustrate that the continuum’s predictions are often consistent with the translator’s choices, although there are also instances where the continuum failed to incorporate important factors of, for example, context and creativity. In conclusion, while the continuum’s results were satisfactory, it has merely been used to test the interpretation of the corpus alongside the translator’s decisions, and not to try and prove the continuum’s validity. - 2 - Table of Contents 1. • Andrew Clark: So I’Ll Just Introduce Our Guest, Who You’Ve Been Anticipating for Weeks Now
Andrew Clark: So I’ll just introduce our guest, who you’ve been anticipating for weeks now. To my far right, the director, a member of Human Giant, the brilliant, brilliant sketch group and writer and former child actor Jason Woliner. Clapping To my immediate right, Chris Elliott. Clapping Andrew Clark: So this is our second go through today, where we are going to needle them with questions, but I’m just gonna start out a little bit… Since we just watched Eagleheart, maybe we’ll start there. Can you guys talk about the beginning of the show? I know we talked a little bit about that earlier, about how you came to be involved and how the show has, sort of, progressed over the last few years, the three seasons. Jason Woliner: Yeah, it was… The pilot was written by these two guys, Michael Koman and Andrew Weinberg, who were Conan writers for like, ten years. They had this idea to do a show that was about the making of, like, a terrible action show. And then we… they wrote a pilot and then I read it, I didn’t really know those guys and then I kinda came on to direct it. Then we found out that Chris liked it and we shot it and it didn’t come out great. There were just things we wanted to change about it. So we wound up… when we did the show we threw everything out and kind of, the three of us, Me, Michael and Andrew, we kinda wrote it from scratch and wrote all the episodes together.
