Atlantic Geoscience Society ABSTRACTS Atlantic Geoscience Society ABSTRACTS 43rd Colloquium & Annual General Meeting 2017 FREDERICTON, New Brunswick The 2017 Colloquium & Annual General Meeting was held at the Fredericton Inn, Fredericton, New Brunswick, on February 10th and 11th. On behalf of the society, we thank Colloquium organizers David Lentz, Dave Keighley, Chris McFarlane, Anne Timmermans, Robin Adair, Jim Walker, Susan Johnson, and Mike Parkhill, as well the numerous student volunteers and judges, for facilitating an excellent meeting with a record 110 abstracts. AGS acknowledges support from the corporate sponsors of the meeting: the University of New Brunswick Fredericton, New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick, New Brunswick Department of Energy and Resource Development, New Brunswick Department of Environment, Wolfden Resources Corporation, AMEC Foster Wheeler, Dillon Consulting, Mining Matters, Avalon Advanced Materials Incorporated, Potash Corporation of New Brunswick, and Pretium Resources Incorporated. In the following pages, we are pleased to publish the abstracts of oral and poster presentations from the meeting, which included a Symposium on “The Northern Appalachian Orogen: Correlations and Conundrums” and five Special Sessions: (1) Museum and University Geology/Paleontology Collections” – in memory of Don Reid, ONS (1922–2016); (2) Magmas and Metals; (3) Environmental Geoscience in the Atlantic Provinces and Beyond; (4) Advances in Carboniferous Geology in the Atlantic Provinces – in memory of Dr. Wouter van de Poll (1932–2017); (5) Where on Earth?: Education, Integration and Development of Earth Science for Social Benefit in Atlantic Canada, as well as General Sessions on “Current Research in the Northern Appalachians and North Atlantic Margin.” Gesner Medal 2017 recipient, Rebecca Jamieson, presented the Geological Association of Canada, Howard Street Robinson Lecture “How do large hot orogens work? Lessons from the middle crust”. Stephen Piercey presented his GAC Hutchison Lecture on “The importance of magmatism in the genesis of the Wolverine volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposit, Yukon, Canada: constraints from lithogeochemical, Nd-Hf isotope, and in situ U-Pb-Hf isotope data” in the special session on Magmas and Metals on Saturday afternoon. Also included with the conference was a half-day workshop on “pXRF applications in Geologic Research and Exploration” by David Lentz (University of New Brunswick). A two-day teacher’s workshop and an evening Earth Science Café, organized by Anne Timmermans and Catherine O’Connell-Cooper (University of New Brunswick, Quartermain Earth Science Centre), were also part of the weekend. The guest speaker at Saturday evening’s banquet and social was Randy Miller (Emeritus New Brunswick Museum, UNB Adjunct) who gave an enlightening talk on the history of the New Brunswick Museum, its collections, and early New Brunswick Geologists, titled “Maybe I could try geology”. Cunjak, Ph.D., Biology This thesis is accepted by the Dean of Graduate Studies THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK April 2018 © William Jesse Webb, 2018 ABSTRACT The nature of precontact Indigenous fisheries and their significance to subsistence economies, seasonal mobility, and diachronic cultural change remain underdeveloped in the archaeology of the Maritime Peninsula, northeastern North America. This thesis presents an analysis of a precontact fishery from BgDs-15, a small shell-bearing site located on the northern mainland of Passamaquoddy Bay, southwestern New Brunswick, Canada. Several hundred bones recovered during the 2004 field excavations and over 3,000 fish remains from midden column and bulk feature samples were examined. Most of these fish bones are attributable to Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod Walbaum, 1792) and unidentified, tomcod-sized gadids, with some herring (Clupeidae) present. Multiple lines of complementary evidence, including taxonomic composition, relative abundances, skeletal element frequency, seasonality, and the ethnohistoric record were examined to produce a high-resolution analysis of the BgDs-15 fishery and provide insight into ancestral Peskotomuhkati settlement-subsistence strategies during the Late Maritime Woodland period (ca. 1350–550 BP). ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The process of developing this thesis has, on the one hand, been the ideal of curiosity-driven academic research and, on the other, a Sisyphean personal struggle.

ABSTRACT OF THESIS STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY OF THE TRANSYLVANIA FAULT ZONE IN BEDFORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA Transverse zones cross strike of thrust-belt structures as large-scale alignments of cross-strike structures. The Transylvania fault zone is a set of discontinuous right-lateral transverse faults striking at about 270º across Appalachian thrust-belt structures along 40º N latitude in Pennsylvania. Near Everett, Pennsylvania, the Breezewood fault terminates with the Ashcom thrust fault. The Everett Gap fault terminates westward with the Hartley thrust fault. Farther west, the Bedford fault extends westward to terminate against the Wills Mountain thrust fault. The rocks, deformed during the Alleghanian orogeny, are semi-independently deformed on opposite sides of the transverse fault, indicating fault movement during folding and thrusting. Palinspastic restorations of cross sections on either side of the fault zone are used to compare transverse fault displacement.

(e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT q1 We report the U-Pb age distribution of detrital zircons collected from central and southern Appalachian foreland basin strata, which record changes of sediment provenance in response to the different phases of the Appalachian orogeny. Taconic clastic wedges have predominantly ∼1080–1180- and ∼1300–1500-Ma zircons, whereas Acadian clastic wedges contain abundant Paleozoic zircons and minor populations of 550–700- and 1900–2200-Ma zircons q2 consistent with a Gondwanan affinity. Alleghanian clastic wedges contain large populations of ∼980–1080-Ma, ∼2700- Ma, and older Archean zircons and fewer Paleozoic zircons than occur in the Acadian clastic wedges. The abundance of Paleozoic detrital zircons in Acadian clastic wedges indicates that the Acadian hinterland consisted of recycled material and possible exposure of Taconic-aged plutons, which provided significant detritus to the Acadian foreland basin. The appearance of Pan-African/Brasiliano- and Eburnean/Trans-Amazonian-aged zircons in Acadian clastic wedges suggests a Devonian accretion of the Carolina terrane. In contrast, the relative decrease in abundance of Paleozoic detrital zircons coupled with an increase of Archean and Grenville zircons in Alleghanian clastic wedges indicates the development of an orogenic hinterland consisting of deformed passive margin strata and Grenville basement.
