Asbury Summer Theatre Director’s Note

presents I have always been a big fan of Garland. Ever since I was a boy (a very long time ago) and first saw “The Wizard of Oz”, I have been “Quiet Please, There’s a Lady On Stage” captivated by Dorothy Gale, the young girl from Kansas who reminded A Tribute to us all that “there is no place like home”. After first seeing Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz,” I started watching producer director many of her films. I enjoyed them all, especially the musicals, where Lu Gmoser Mauro Contrastano she introduced memorable songs such as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “The Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe”, “The Boy music director choreographer Next Door” and “The Man That Got Away”. Many of the songs that Donna Cribari Mary Ann Penzero she introduced in her films became part of her repertoire during her concert years. Numerous critics regard her as one of the greatest concert starring performers of her time, while the American Film Institute placed her Ruth Chiamulera Mary Pile eighth among the greatest female stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Jason Fogarty Michael Quigley The title of this show comes from a song written by singer/dancer/ Jeannine Padula Goche Carmela Sirico songwriter Peter Allen in memory of his late mother-in-law, Judy Garland Anthony Maltese Gary Skidmore (Allen was married to Liza Minnelli from 1967-1974). This song was featured in the autobiographical show about Allen’s life and career, “The Boy from Program Oz”, paying tribute to Garland and the support she gave him. What is especially unique about Judy Garland is that, unlike many of —act 1— her contemporaries who have long since been forgotten, she lives on in American popular culture. As long as “The Wizard of Oz” is shown each year “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart” Company on television, Judy Garland is introduced to a new generation of Americans. For both the young and the young-at-heart, she is forever the young girl “Dear Mr. Gable, You Made Me Love You” Jeannine from Kansas trying to find her way home—she is forever Dorothy. “I Cried for You” Ruth —MAURO CONTRASTANO “Our Love Affair” Jason & Mary “It’s a Great Day for the Irish” Michael “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” Carmela “Every Little Movement” Ruth & Jeannine “Broadway Rhythm” Anthony & Jason “Meet Me in St. Louis” Mary & Carmela “The Trolley Song” Jason Mary Pile is thrilled to be returning to the AST stage after a long hiatus. “The Boy Next Door” Mary When she first began performing she found herself on the AST stage “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” Company performing in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” It was “” during that production that she first met Mauro Contrastano.
