American Radio Archives Thousand Oaks Library American Radio Archives Sportsmen Collection Introduction The Sportsmen Collection of the American Radio Archives of the Thousand Oaks Library consists primarily of musical scores used by this singing group from the mid-1940s until the late 1960s. The collection contains approximately 120 handwritten scores, as well as a small assortment of photographs and publicity material. This collection was assembled by member Robert Garsen. History Information about the early days of the group is sketchy - the Sportsmen Quartet was founded in 1938 by Bill Days and Max Smith, who had left the Paul Taylor Choristers to form their own quartet. They joined with Don Craig and Art McCullough as a group they called The Metropolitans, later renamed The Sportsmen. Over the years the membership of the quartet changed frequently. By 1947, the Sportsmen were best known for their work on the Jack Benny Program, where they often provided a "singing commercial," in which the group poked fun at or parodied the sponsor of the program. As a recurring gag on the program, Benny threatened to fire the group, which he pretended to actually do on March 9, 1947, replacing them the next week with a quartet that included Bing Crosby, Andy Russell, Dick Haymes, and Dennis Day. The Sportsmen did not perform exclusively with Benny, but also appeared on other radio programs such as Burns and Allen, the Eddie Cantor Show, the Judy Canova Show, and the Sealtest Village Store. On many of these programs they performed comic songs or commercials, similar to their work on Benny's program. In addition, they appeared in films, worked with other singing groups, recorded albums, and in the 1950s appeared on television programs as well, including the televised version of the Jack Benny Show. Tenor Robert Garsen founded a musical-comedy group called The Continentals in 1954. They performed in live venues, such as the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, and also on several television programs, including the Red Skelton Show, the Milton Berle Show, and the Ed Sullivan Show. Garsen was best known within the group for his whistling rendition of "Flight of the Bumblebee," and for portraying the character of Casey in "Casey at the Bat" - acts he continued to perform with The Sportsmen, whom he joined in 1957. Scope and Content Most of the musical scores and arrangements in the collection are arranged alphabetically by song title, since they bear no notations as to which programs or performances they were used on. Those that do have identifying notations are arranged according to the programs; the remainder are scores for songs used on albums that the group recorded, and miscellaneous papers, primarily publicity material and photographs. Since the collection was compiled by Garsen, some material relating to his career with The Continentals is also included, and there is no way to identify those scores that may have been were performed solely with that group. Garsen joined the Sportsmen relatively late, but he obtained many scores from other group members that were clearly identified as having been performed by them prior to Garsen's involvement, and these scores comprise the bulk of the collection. • Edward “Kid” Ory
Edward “Kid” Ory Mr. Edward “Kid” Ory was born in Woodland Plantation near La Place, Louisiana on December 25, 1886. As a child he started playing music on his own homemade instruments. He played the banjo during his youth but his love was playing the trombone. However, the banjo helped him develop “tailgate” a particular style of playing the trombone. By the time he was a teenager, Ory was the leader of a well-regarded band in southeast Louisiana. In his early twenty’s, he moved to New Orleans with his band where he became one of the most talented trombonists of early jazz from 1912 to 1919. In 1919, Ory relocated to Los Angeles, California for health reasons. He assembled a new group of New Orleans musicians on the West Coast and played regularly under the name of Kid Ory’s Creole Orchestra. There, he recorded the 1920s classics “Shine,” “Tiger Rag,” “Muskrat Ramble,” and “Maryland, My Maryland.” In 1922, he became the first African American jazz bank from New Orleans to record a studio album. In 1925, Ory moved to Chicago and took interest in working on radio broadcasts and recording with names such musicians as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds, and many others. During the Great Depression, Ory left music but returned in 1943 to lead one of the top New Orleans style bands of the period until 1961. It was about 1966 when Ory retired and spent his last years in Hawaii. He did, however, play occasionally for special events. One of his last performances was in 1971 when he surprised everyone by coming back to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

  • Southern Black Gospel Music: Qualitative Look at Quartet Sound
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SOUTHERN BLACK GOSPEL MUSIC: QUALITATIVE LOOK AT QUARTET SOUND DURING THE GOSPEL ‘BOOM’ PERIOD OF 1940-1960 A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY BY BEATRICE IRENE PATE LYNCHBURG, V.A. April 2014 1 Abstract The purpose of this work is to identify features of southern black gospel music, and to highlight what makes the music unique. One goal is to present information about black gospel music and distinguishing the different definitions of gospel through various ages of gospel music. A historical accounting for the gospel music is necessary, to distinguish how the different definitions of gospel are from other forms of gospel music during different ages of gospel. The distinctions are important for understanding gospel music and the ‘Southern’ gospel music distinction. The quartet sound was the most popular form of music during the Golden Age of Gospel, a period in which there was significant growth of public consumption of Black gospel music, which was an explosion of black gospel culture, hence the term ‘gospel boom.’ The gospel boom period was from 1940 to 1960, right after the Great Depression, a period that also included World War II, and right before the Civil Rights Movement became a nationwide movement. This work will evaluate the quartet sound during the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, which will provide a different definition for gospel music during that era. Using five black southern gospel quartets—The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Golden Gate Quartet, The Soul Stirrers, and The Swan Silvertones—to define what southern black gospel music is, its components, and to identify important cultural elements of the music.

  • Aint Gonna Study War No More / Down by the Riverside
The Danish Peace Academy 1 Holger Terp: Aint gonna study war no more Ain't gonna study war no more By Holger Terp American gospel, workers- and peace song. Author: Text: Unknown, after 1917. Music: John J. Nolan 1902. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. Nolan.3 1 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grovemusic/spirituals,_hymns,_gospel_songs.htm 2 Thanks to Ulf Sandberg, Sweden, for the Pete Seeger quote.
