Repelled by Carfilhiot, Suldrun refuses. In a rage, Casmir confines her to her garden, barred on two sides by a steep ravine, the third by a wall and a locked gate, and the fourth by the sea. Suldrun is content to be alone until one day, a half-drowned sailor washes ashore. Princes Aillas and Trewan of Troicinet are sent on a sea voyage to visit the various kingdoms of the Elder.

Maloney 2005 ABSTRACT This study explores the use of footnotes in fictional narratives. Footnotes and endnotes fall under the category of what Gérard Genette has labeled paratexts, or the elements that sit above or external to the text of the story. In some narratives, however, notes and other paratexts are incorporated into the story as part of the internal narrative frame. I call this particular type of paratext an artificial paratext. Much like traditional paratexts, artificial paratexts are often seen as ancillary to the text. However, artificial paratexts can play a significant role in the narrative dynamic by extending the boundaries of the narrative frame, introducing new heuristic models for interpretation, and offering alternative narrative threads for the reader to unravel. In addition, artificial paratexts provide a useful lens through which to explore current theories of narrative progression, character development, voice, and reliability. In the first chapter, I develop a typology of paratexts, showing that paratexts have been used to deliver factual information, interpretive or analytical glosses, and discursive narratives in their own right. Paratexts can originate from a number of possible sources, including allographic sources (editors, translators, publishers) and autographic sources— the author, writing as author, fictitious editor, or one or more of the narrators.

    Science Fiction Book Club Interview with John Vance II (April 2020) John H. Vance II is the only child of Jack and Norma Vance. And raised three children in the house that he and his father built with their own hands. He is now an “empty-nester” living in the old house with his fiancé, four cats and a dog (and the house remains a work in progress). John has worked actively with fans to preserve and promote his father's work, starting with Paul Rhoads in 1999, an association which led to publication of a subscription-funded set of 44 volumes known as the Vance Integral Edition, now sought after by collectors and hardcore fans alike. John manages his father's legacy through the publishing company Spatterlight Press LLC. John made his career designing and operating submersible systems and other marine equipment. Robert Matthew Knuckles: Vance's "Dying Earth" is often cited as the inspiration for the Magic System of earlier Editions of Dungeons & Dragons. How did he feel about the level of influence he had on such a phenomenally popular game and its many imitators? He was hardly aware of it. After a letter or two with Gary Gygax at the start he had little feedback, and of course zero income from the situation—so he had no way of knowing. Mann und Mythos Jack Vance (richtiger Name: John Holbrook Vance) wurde am 28. August 1916 als Sohn von Charles Albert und Edith (Hoef- ler) Vance in San Francisco geboren. Er wuchs auf einer Ranch im San Joaquin Valley in Kalifornien auf und besuchte die University of California in Berkeley, wo er Bergbau, Physik und Journalismus studierte. Während und nach dem 2. Weltkrieg fuhr er als Matrose der US-Handelsmarine zur See. Nach dem Krieg ging er mehreren Beschäftigungen nach: Er arbeitete in einer Konservenfabrik, als Zimmermann, als Obstpflücker und spielte in einer Jazzband Trompete. 1946 heiratete er Norma Ingold; 1961 wurde ihr Sohn John geboren. Die Vances leben in Oakland und haben im Laufe der Jahre nahezu die ganze Welt bereist. Eines von Jack Vances bevorzugten Magazinen seiner Jugend war Weird Tales, in dem er die Geschichten von Clark Asthon Smith und Edgar Rice Burroughs las.

    Fantasy Subgenres (courtesy http://www.cuebon.com/ewriters/Fsubgenres.html) (Definitions and Examples - All) Whether set on our familar Earth (past or present), or in a vast parallel world, or some dreamlike realm where everything is different, fantasy tales allow our imaginations free reign. Even so its relationships, and use of magic, must be internally consistent. Alternate World fantasy involves different worlds hidden within or parallel to our own. In past times these could be found in a mysterious country, as in Johnathan Swift's novel Gulliver's Travels. With the Earth explored, some were envisioned inside a mirror, as with Lewis Carroll's novel Through the Looking Glass. Others 'distill' whole fictional libraries, as with John Myers Myers' novel Silverlock. In our scientific era, often these worlds are in a parallel cosmos, as depicted in Roger Zelazny's "Amber" series. Arthurian subgenre tales are set in the world of King Arthur's legendary Camelot. Merlin, Lancelot, Ygraine and friends are involved in fresh adventures. These novels have been popular for centuries, and one famous modern example is Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. Bangsian fantasy takes its name from a 19th century author named John Bangs. This subgenre deals all or mostly with the afterlife. Early legends speak of Hades, and it's been going strong ever since. A modern example is Philip Jose Farmer's "Riverworld" series, which overlaps with 'science fiction.' Though marketed as literary fiction, with its Heaven-dwelling narrator, Alice Sebold's novel and movie The Lovely Bones fits this category. Celtic fantasy draws upon the rich lore of the Celtic peoples, mostly but not always from Ireland.
