World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice.

ONE SUNDAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD EVERY YEAR, SOMETHING SPECIAL HAPPENS on the next-to-last Sun- day of October. We celebrate this day by remembering our baptismal call – to bring the Gospel to all! WORLD MISSION SUNDAY joins all Catholics of the world into one community of faith. At Mass that Sunday, we recommit our- selves to our common vocation, through Baptism, to be missionar- ies, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving gener- ously to the collection for the Soci- ety for the Propagation of the Faith.

In his message for World Mission Sunday this year, Francis asks us to respond to our baptismal call to mission by saying, “Here I Am, Send Me.” This is the mission that all Christians have received, and God gives us the grace to live it out wherever we may be. As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish and school throughout the world. Together, through our prayers and financial support, we bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communi- ties in the Pope’s missions. In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries by our Baptism, as it offers each of us an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses. WITH GRATEFUL HEARTS FOR YOUR MISSION SOLIDARITY!

History of the Propagation of the Faith In in the early 19th century, Venerable Pauline Jaricot, inspired by letters about the Missions from her brother, Phileas, started gathering small groups of people–mostly workers in her family’s silk factory. She asked each member of the group to offer daily prayer and a weekly sacrifice of a sous (the equivalent of a penny at that time) for the Church’s worldwide missionary work. Pauline insisted that her efforts be directed to all the Church’s missions–that it be universal. Pauline’s vision became the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The very first collection of the Prop- agation of the Faith in 1822 supported the vast diocese of Louisiana, which then extended from the Florida Keys to Canada, as well as the missions of Kentucky and China.

As described by Pope John Paul II, World Mission Sunday is “an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world” (see Redemptoris Missio 81). Your ongoing support of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries in dioceses around the globe. Your generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and catechists to reach out to communities, families, and children in desper- ate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances! —From Archdiocese of Baltimore All Souls Day Monday November 2, 2020
