The Oscar- and Emmy-winning San Francisco director/animator has quietly carved out a one-of-a-kind career over the past five decades. Praised by Pauline Kael as one of the most “gifted, intelligent men outside the industry… attempting to make inexpensive feature-films as honestly and independently as they can,” Korty has forgone mainstream Hollywood ambitions despite his early Bay Area associations with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. Instead he chose to pursue uncompromisingly original, refreshingly offbeat indie projects across narrative, documentary, animation, and television that reflect his boundless visual imagination and humanistic outlook. Opening the series on Tuesday, February 24 is an exceedingly rare 35mm screening of the eye- popping cult animation masterpiece Twice Upon A Time (1983), barely seen on the big screen in New York since its tragically limited original release. Other highlights include Funnyman (1967— Feb 25), a stop-motion animation/live-action hybrid featuring legendary San Francisco comedy troupe the Committee; Korty’s feature debut The Crazy-Quilt (1966—Feb 25), part of the 1979 New York Film Festival’s seminal American Independents survey alongside classics The Cool World, Badlands, Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song, and Northern Lights; and Korty’s Academy Award-winning documentary, Who Are the DeBolts? And Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids? (1977—Feb 26). -

Dedication of Light to Amiri Baraka You dream of meeting certain people. Amiri Baraka was on my bucket list. When I decided to create a Black Arts Movement Conference at UC Merced, the truth was it was an opportunity to meet my Heroes and Sheroes. Marvin X, the west coast co-founder of the Black Arts Movement asked Amiri to come to UC Merced, and he immediately said yes, as did Ishmael Reed, Eugene Redmond, Jerry Varnardo, Jimmy Garrett, Umar Bin Hassan, Askia Toure, Genny Lim, Emory Douglas, Billy X. Jennings, Adilah Barnes, Tarika Lewis, Avotcja, Charlotte “Mama C” O’Neal, Nathan Hare, Cecil Brown, and a host of other Black Arts Movement and Black Power luminaries. Why did they come to a small city in California’s San Joaquin Valley? This may seem farfetched, but it was about community. A feeling of belonging to something greater, a distant space in time that spoke of revolution, the liberation of a colonized people, and the need to connect. Many of the writers, activists, and artists had not seen each other in over forty years but connected through the pain, the hope, and the belief that they had a mission, the liberation of African Americans from oppression. Askia Toure spoke to students at UC Merced stating, “We let you down. It is up to you to fulfill what we tried to do.” Toure spoke as a freedom fighter, one who in the past went underground to survive. With Toure in this fight were Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Larry Neal, and men and women who believed that they were in the midst of a revolution. -

Hallmark Collection 20000 Leagues Under The Sea In 1867, Professor Aronnax (Richard Crenna), renowned marine biologist, is summoned by the Navy to identify the mysterious sea creature that disabled the steamship Scotia in die North Atlantic. He agrees to undertake an expedition. His daughter, Sophie (Julie Cox), also a brilliant marine biologist, disguised as a man, comes as her father's assistant. On ship, she becomes smitten with harpoonist Ned Land (Paul Gross). At night, the shimmering green sea beast is spotted. When Ned tries to spear it, the monster rams their ship. Aronnax, Sophie and Ned are thrown overboard. Floundering, they cling to a huge hull which rises from the deeps. The "sea beast" is a sleek futuristic submarine, commanded by Captain Nemo. He invites them aboard, but warns if they enter the Nautilus, they will not be free to leave. The submarine is a marvel of technology, with electricity harnessed for use on board. Nemo provides his guests diving suits equipped with oxygen for exploration of die dazzling undersea world. Aronnax learns Nemo was destined to be the king to lead his people into the modern scientific world, but was forced from his land by enemies. Now, he is hoping to halt shipping between the United States and Europe as a way of regaining his throne. Ned makes several escape attempts, but Sophie and her father find the opportunities for scientific study too great to leave. Sophie rejects Nemo's marriage proposal calling him selfish. He shows his generosity, revealing gold bars he will drop near his former country for pearl divers to find and use to help the unfortunate. -

Rosenfeld Introduction On November 6, 1968, students from the Black Student Union and the Third World Liberation Front at San Francisco State College (later San Francisco State University) initiated a five-month strike -- the longest campus strike in U.S. history -- which set in motion a chain of events that changed the face of American higher education. One of the earliest and most significant results of the strike was that acting college president S. I. Hayakawa agreed to the immediate establishment of the nation’s first departments of black and ethnic studies, to be housed in a separate school of ethnic studies. These had been the key demands of the strikers themselves, who believed such programs would revolutionize the “white racist” institution and provide students of color with the necessary tools for combating oppression and pursuing social justice within their respective communities. The establishment of the nation’s first departments of black and ethnic studies marked the first time in the history of the modern American research university that identity politics and the pursuit of social justice played a significant role in the core mission of an academic discipline.
