  • Rituparno Ghosh: the 'Woman's Director
1 OF ‘WOMEN’ AND ‘RELATIONSHIPS’ IN CONTEMPORARY BENGALI CINEMA: RITUPORNO GHOSH’S OEUVRE Somdatta Mandal He explores human relationships with a rare sensitivity. In all his films he handles human frailties with tenderness and understanding, humor and irony. It is this quality that won the young Bengali director Rituporno Ghosh, laurels for all the seven films he’s made till date. In less than a decade, he has acquired a reputation that takes him far beyond his immediate area of creative operation in West Bengal. A simple storyline and superb acting make his movies special. As his films revolve around relationships, they are emotionally gripping and do not need the props of songs and dance. Moreover what gives Rituporno an edge over other directors is that he wins awards and draws crowds. His successful film career has already made him the bridge between good Bengali cinema and crowds – something that eluded other greats like Satyajit Ray, Rittik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. Born in 1961, Rituporno began his life in advertising and had no formal training in filmmaking but being the son of a documentary filmmaker, he grew up within the ambience of filmmaking. His films offer the Bengali film cognoscenti an enthralling time and prove once again that he is a specialist in ‘human relationships’ and in the ‘female mind’, particularly when in turmoil. Asked why he concentrated so much on relationships, he candidly admitted, “Relationships fascinate me. I was born in a middle class family, so naturally, relationships played a very important part of my life. Even today, relationships are essential to me.

  • I N T E R V I E W with Aryanil Mukherjee
The MUD Proposal 2nd Update, Sep. 2013 Cinema as Poetry A conversation with Dhritiman Chaterji Aryanil Mukherjee AM: Lets begin with a Luis Buñuel quote from the 1920s – ‘The cinema seems to have been invented to express the life of the subconscious, the roots of which penetrate poetry so deeply’ – which, compounded with related thoughts on the same subject by others, like D. W. Griffith for example, goes to show that cinema, as public arts in the West, might have been initially conceived as something close to poetry. Then in 1965, at the New Film Festival in Pisaro, Pasolini is heard saying – ‘The inner law of the film, that of "obsessive framing," thus shows clearly the preponderance of a formalism as a myth finally liberated and hence poetic. But then, gradually, the language of poetry, that is cinema made way for the language of the narrative.’ What are your own thoughts on this transformation of the cinematic art form? DC: Let me begin by saying that I am, neither by training nor by inclination, a film theoretician or academic. My grounding in film history is not strong. Also, I think that people tend to find affinities or draw parallels between art forms where their natural sympathies or enthusiasms lie. It is well known, for example, that Satyajit Ray found the structure of Western classical musical music to be very useful to the construction of his films. Now, while I enjoy poetry and particularly certain poets, I have no difficulty in saying that it has not formed a major part of my reading.

International Journal of Advanced Education and Research International Journal of Advanced Education and Research ISSN: 2455-5746, Impact Factor: RJIF 5.34 www.alleducationjournal.com Volume 2; Issue 3; May 2017; Page No. 137-142 The many faces of exile in Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s The Ghost of Gosain Bagan and Father Gabriel’s Crypt Debolina Dey Assistant Professor of English at Ramjas College, Delhi University, Delhi, India Abstract This paper mainly focuses on two of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s stories and seeks to critique systems of formal pedagogy, and probe the close connections between the child’s psychology and the pedagogic appraisal in the system of formal education; and how this in turn creates the child as a subject, and has a formative influence on him. This paper also analyses the space of the enchanted as one that allows the child to explore vistas beyond the classroom, a site that allows him to confront his “demons” through metaphoric or real ghosts. Set in contemporary society where formal education and its forms of appraisal becomes the yardstick for measuring self worth, failure is a concept that is no longer treated as a space for growth. For the child, the growing pressure and the need to “perform” is not just a metaphoric value judgement, as in both cases of Haribandhu and Burun- it accompanies forms of exile. Exile then is not just a form of punishment; it entails the psychological alienation of the child from the “home”, struggling to reconcile the concepts of failure, filial loyalty and academic progress. Mukhopadhyay in The Ghost of Gosain Bagan and Father Gabriel’s Crypt strongly critiques this sense of progress, and creates an alternate space for the child to rediscover his sense of self.
