Based on Ephesians chapter 2 we were dead to the things of God. We followed the flesh and it was leading us down the path to destruction—it was killing us. Whether we all agree or not, this chapter tells us that without God, everyone is following Satan and carries the title of “children of wrath.” “Wow, that is pretty hard,” you may say. Yes, it is, but it is still the truth. The truth may hurt, but such a merciful rescue is worth the pain. Notice something else in this chapter: “the rest of mankind.” Mankind is doomed if mankind trusts and believes in itself. We cannot fix the issue that separates us so far from God. Sin is not little, it is HUGE. Sin must be dealt with. Sin will not be overlooked. It must be killed. This is where the Gospel (Good News) comes in. But God… in his mercy, rescues dead people. We were lost and headed for destruction, BUT GOD. We are sinners who belittle the name of God and committed treason against the King of the Universe, BUT GOD. We exchange the glory of God for worthless things, BUT GOD. We were enslaved to sin, BUT GOD. We are crushed by our iniquities, BUT GOD. We bruise ourselves and choose death, BUT GOD. These are the two greatest word ever to be spoken! Do you feel the power that comes by just saying these words? These words are a treasure to those who have been rescued and saved and delivered. Salvation is of God, it is the BUT GOD in these words that carry the weight of our redemption. Dead people cannot rescue themselves, they are dead. They must be rescued by the One who is Life: Christ. Listen to the verses: But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved. O, this is what Lifegroups are all about. The foundation must be revisited all the time. The foundation for everything that we do is…BUT GOD. This is what we desire to let others know— that they can be rescued! That they do not have to try, nor could they ever fix, save, or change themselves. Though we try, there is only one way God desires to transform us: with Christ! We as the body of Christ must be rescuers. We must proclaim the message of the Gospel. We must live in such a way that makes people know who we serve. We must be selfless. We must open our doors to the world. We must bless when persecuted. We must carry our crosses everywhere. We must love people with the banner of BUT GOD. Our Lifegroup leaders are ones that have been rescued. They are here to tell their BUT GOD story with others and to use their passions to talk about their greatest passion: Christ. There is a group for every person, for every age, and for every stage in life. There is no reason you cannot get connected here. We are here for you. Let us serve you and train you, but most of all, may we remind you: BUT GOD. Affectionately His, Kerr Howell Jr. |4 LIFE GROUPS SPRING 2012 LIFEGROUPS ARE THE HEART OF RLM.
