We build students’ spiritual intelligence alongside their social, emotional, mental and + Reverend Father Shmuel Shamuel Chaplain physical intelligence; as much as students need to be future St Narsai Assyrian Christian College ready citizens, they also need to be ready to be citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. This is reflected not just in the Eucharistic services held at the College and in Christian Studies classes, but also in all areas of the College’s community life. Through its ethos, values, and principles, our goal is to prepare our students to contribute to the Assyrian community in the future and to the wider Australian community as confident and strong-faith Christians.

We, at St Narsai Assyrian Christian College, play the transitional role between the early education at St Hurmizd Assyrian Primary School and the future of our students; we partner with our families to provide pastoral care for our students to acquire the values they need in facing new challenges. As students move on to different stages of their education and future, they will mix with people from different backgrounds, yet they will need the guidance to stay connected to their community and Church. Our students will experience hardships in life, and we need to provide them with the tools to assist them to move past worldly struggles and to ensure their spiritual life leads FACULTY the way of their mental health. This is why it is important for parents to set an example of spiritual life, as members who regularly attend church, contribute to the church community REPORTS by helping in committees or joining the choir, being a part of Bible Studies or attending preachings. Parents need to assist the school by leading in example to draw their children closer to the church and to encourage them to draw nearer to God in everything they do because otherwise, the world we live in will just pull them away from their faith. Encourage your children to draw nearer to fellowship with Christians and to draw nearer to the House of God – to have their eyes fixed on it (1 Kings 8:22).

The English Mr. Michael Cunningham faculty has imbedded many aspects of the Culture of Thinking English Coordinator through critical thinking routines into various Stages; this is to ensure that our students gain the skill sets much needed, both within and outside of the College. The routines are grounded in academic work and research by Ron Ritchhart at Harvard University, which has proven success in pushing students to be critical and creative thinkers. Learners have taken to the routines like a knife through hot butter, demonstrating greater confidence and showing a deeper understanding of links to their learning.

Across English, we have been focusing on a wide range of improvement strategies in order to foster student engagement and progress. This has been achieved by developing a culture of thinking, which has been mostly successful due to the consistent application of thinking routines. In affording students time to appreciate writing, through the POWER writing process. Through regular feedback to students, which allows them to make corrections and improvements on all tasks; this use of timely feedback allows learners time to reflect and become independent and self-regulated learners. The above aspect is echoed within the faculty’s mission;

“…empower our students to be appreciative of a culture of thinking… foster their independent, though with creativity and imagination…challenge our students to become reflective thinkers…growth in themselves and their holistic learning of English.”

34 35 COCURRICULAR REPORT

“In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two Together we look forward to 2021, which will hopefully allow St means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for Narsai Assyrian Christian College to reach its full potential with the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. sport and cocurricular. With these means, man can attain perfection.” – Plato Mr. Christopher Lazarou This year I have had the pleasure of being able to overhaul Cocurricular Coordinator and remodel our sport program. I am proud to say that 2020 saw St Narsai Assyrian Christian College establish a successful Cocurricular model in which students can pursue learning outside the standard classroom and syllabus content. Cocurricular programs are designed to promote student’s physical, cultural and social development.

By creating partnerships with local community sporting facilities and providers, we have been able to offer students a variety of sporting, cultural and extracurricular activities. These include fortnightly offerings to Years 7-10 of kickboxing, gym, ice-skating, sustainability/gardening, golf, tennis, Ninja Warrior, dance, futsal, cooking, chess, music and arts/craft to name a few.

Students are given choice and flexibility in their activities as well as being encouraged to have new experiences, which supports the building of strong and confident young people.

For the cocurricular program, students are invited to choose from up to 20 activities to participate in on a fortnightly basis. Each term, year groups rotate between in-school activities and out of school activities. This program has allowed students to come out of the traditional learning environment and interact with their peers, learn new activities and pursue social activities with their friends, ultimately contributing to positive school experiences.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, sport at St Narsai faced many interruptions. Although we had a very successful swimming carnival in March with fantastic levels of participation from all grades, many other sporting events that were planned had to unfortunately be cancelled; this included our annual Athletics and Cross-Country carnivals. Interschool sporting competitions like basketball, futsal and soccer were also unfortunately cancelled. Positively, our cocurricular program was able to be modified to allow students to still participate in sport and physical activities, demonstrating the resilience our learners’ displayed in dealing with the unfortunate cancellations and modifications.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the college sport teachers who have given their time and efforts to create positive learning experiences for our students.

36 37 SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM

“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ – Matthew 25:40.

We were humbled and privileged to continue our role as the Student Leadership Team Coordinators for 2020, to guide and grow with a dedicated group of young adults, who demonstrated true Christian Values and outstanding leadership skills. We built our meetings and initiatives on the school’s motto ‘In Him We Grow’ and worked to provide St. Nasai’s learners an array of opportunities to demonstrate their humility and almsgiving.

This year, more than ever, the role of student leaders was proven to be of utmost importance. Our leaders were faced with the difficult change in their life, being away from their family and friends, learning outside the normal constraints of a classroom and all the while living through a pandemic. This pandemic reiterated to our college and wider community one very important message, life without Christ and faith in Him and His will is meaningless.

This year saw a first as our leadership team discussions moved online and leaders continued to support and inspire their year groups while keeping up with their own online learning. For the first time in the schools’ history we would not come together to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. However, our leaders put together a video wishing all our community members, both near and far, a blessed . This video was posted to all cohort TEAMS pages as well as the St Narsai’s Facebook page, demonstrating the team’s resilience even when faced with struggles.

Every morning when students were in the College campus, they would start their day with a prayer and reading from the Bible. In order to continue this initiative within the home school setting, our student leaders developed a roster where each Monday and Friday a student would break down the key message behind a particular Bible verse. This gave the students an opportunity to send to their peers’ messages of hope during such a difficult time. It is truly incredible to witness these young leaders put into practice all the learning that has taken place in the Christian Studies classroom.

We take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Senior (Senior SLT) and Christian (CRC) leaders and congratulate them on the outstanding job they have done and amazing leadership skills they have demonstrated. Throughout the year, we saw our student leaders demonstrate true Christian values outside the classroom and to the wider community. In showing their love and compassion to those in need, all students participated and contributed in raising funds for the needy, both in Australia and 38 39 CAREERS REPORT for our brothers and sisters in our homelands. Through this program, our Stage 5 learners were introduced to the idea of the exciting opportunities that lay ahead. Throughout the year, students participate in In-School Workshops designed to enhance social and academic skills and assist them in reaching their full potential. Students have also been involved in campus days to see first-hand what university can offer them. Programs like this are essential to enrich the lifelong learning of our students and provide them with the opportunities that encourage long term goal setting in relation to their future education and career.

This year senior students have had the opportunity to take part in one-on-one sessions with myself to further discuss career aspirations and study pathways. They have researched the range of courses available to them and also learned about scholarship opportunities and all the unique pathway programs available to ensure they are well prepared for the world and post-secondary education.

As this year comes to an end, we wish the current Year 12, class of 2020 graduates all the very best in their journey in life after High School.

I have had the pleasure of being Year 8 Adviser in 2020 and I am so proud of how all the students have progressed throughout the year. Year 8 students have grown both academically and spiritually within the ethos of the college, however, what I am most proud of is the resilience the students have shown with the challenges they have faced this year.

During periods of Term 1 and 2, students completed their studies online due to the unfortunate spread of COVID. No one could have foreseen that online learning could play an important role in imparting knowledge digitally to the students. This more flexible approach to learning enabled Year 8 students to develop their independence, self-discipline and responsibility by taking their learning into their own hands.

Pastoral Care, this year, has focused on developing a growth mindset, resilience and teamwork. Each lesson, students participated in a variety of team-building activities to develop their communication skills, and promote positive relationships. In Term 2, Year 8 participated in ‘The Amazing Race’, in which they were required to work in teams to decipher clues and find hidden images around the school. This was a great opportunity for students, and their PC teachers to get outside for some fun and build on their collaboration and team building skills.

Co-curricular, introduced this year, saw students participate in a variety of activities, such as: cooking club, gardening club, debating, soccer, ice skating, dance etc. This gave Year 8 students the opportunity to develop their interests and hobbies, however, also promoting learning experiences that complimented their studies.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the hard work and dedication from the teachers who helped nurture the Year 8’s academic, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A special thank you to Miss Ornilla Shamon, Mrs Rita Neesan, Miss Alena Kando, Mr Elias Atto, Miss Katrina Yip, Ms Ciara Salmaggi, Miss Jessica Kako, Mrs Meetu Chhabra, Mrs Mary Said and Miss Robina Yonan. I would also like to thank the continued support from the PC Coordinator, Mrs Alison Kaya. These teachers worked tirelessly and without their efforts, Year 8’s success would not have been possible.

With 2020 coming and passing by so swiftly, I will be eagerly anticipating the challenges and triumphs that this cohort will have next year in Year 9.

2020 has undoubtedly been an eventful and transitional year A massive thank you to Mrs Christina Kattos for your constant for Year 10. Returning to the College mid-way in Term 2 saw Year 10 develop their understanding of service, humility and stewardship both inside and outside of the College environment. This also continued throughout Term 3, as many Year 10 students volunteered with assisting the Assyrian Church distribute Bookhrah to many parishioners and gave donations to various charity organisations. Students also volunteered to help and assist teachers with setting up sporting equipment within College, canteen staff serving students during recess and lunch, the Pastoral Care Team with “R U OK?” Day organisation, and preparation for Year 12 2020 Graduation Day. Through these actions, they not only demonstrated Christian values but they also demonstrated great leadership skills that demonstrate they are ready to become seniors.

Throughout 2020, Year 10 definitely proved that they are ready for the next chapter in their lives; the chapter that truly paves the way for their future. Students took time in framing their future journey at school before the subject selection process. They observed Stage 6 subject lessons, completed careers lessons, and participated in an interview with a panel of teachers, ensuring they were making the right decisions for their senior years. To further assist students during this time of change and transition, Pastoral Care lessons focused on lessons and activities that ultimately improved, enhanced and strengthened their well-being, goal setting, study skills and resilience.

Year 10, you are an amazing cohort. Throughout the year, I have watched you all grow and become respectable, responsible, and dedicated students. You have progressed not only academically but also spiritually. I am so blessed to be your Year Adviser and look forward to sharing your challenges and triumphs in Year 11.
