After 14 months away, it was wonderful last week to make our long-awaited return to our Barbican home, and to be able to reunite with audiences in person, sharing once again in the joy of live music. Sincere thanks to all of our supporters: your generosity has enabled us to continue sharing music with audiences across the globe through these challenging times, and now continues to assist our return to live performance and our recovery from the pandemic. With these concerts we welcome back LSO Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas, who has been sorely missed over the past year. Across four concerts at the Barbican and LSO St Luke’s, he conducts music by Grieg and Copland, piano concertos by Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich, and symphonies by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. It is a pleasure to be joined also by soloist Yuja Wang, who has performed with the Orchestra and Michael Tilson Thomas regularly over the years, most recently in 2017 when she joined the Orchestra on tour in Europe. Following these London performances of Rachmaninoff’s and Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concertos, we look forward to Yuja Wang – and Michael Tilson Thomas – joining us for further concerts at Snape Maltings next week. Two things in particular stick in the memory: the warmth of tone of Grieg’s 1892 Steinway piano, which Tom had the privilege of playing; and the extraordinary natural beauty of the surroundings, with Grieg’s composing hut overlooking the serene Nordås Lake. Grieg is a composer we have both adored since childhood. Like the environment in which he composed, his music has a disarming honesty and naturalness, infused with lyrical warmth, folk-inspired beauty and echoes of the Norwegian landscape. Of Grieg’s three violin sonatas, it is the third which has become part of the core repertoire, and it was one of the first collaborative works Elena ever played.

    Bjarte Engeset: EDVARD GRIEG’S ORCHESTRAL STYLE - a conductor’s point of view Good morning, everybody! Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) wrote the following after he had performed his Norwegian Peasant Dances (Slåtter) op. 72: I played them with all my love and all my troll magic. 1 Jeg spillede dem med al den Kjærlighed og Troldskab, jeg ejede. In the written introduction to Slåtter he uses similar word pairs describing the music: «their combination of nice and pure grace with bold power and untamed ferocity».2 In such associative word pairings, close to value-laden concepts like God and Devil, Culture and Barbarism, Grieg reveals his aesthetics. I therefore use this contrastive sentence as disposition for this study of Grieg’s universe of orchestral sonorities: [1] «Love» (Colour) «A World of Sonorities» «The Path of Poetry» «Imbued with the one great Tone» «The transparent Clarity» «This Natural Freshness» «Troll magic» (Contour) «Rhythmical Punctuation» «Brave and bizarre Phantasy» «The Horror and Songs of the Waterfall» These symbol loaded bars from Night Scene in Peer Gynt op. 23, depicts in a condensed way this universe: Example 1: Night Scene (Peer Gynt op. 23), bb. 19–23. [2] Grieg here links very different colours. The first augmented chord is dominated by a stopped horn note marked fp, floating into a soft and bright A-major chord marked pp, with a typical sound of two flutes and two clarinets. We are entering a world rich of associations and contrast. Grieg had a great concern for the element of sound colour, so the lack of research in this particular field is both surprising and motivating.

Somewhere there’s a Gregorian theme. There are four movements, the first is agitato. The second begins with extreme low and high pitches, loud rhythmic middle. The third has a weird mute stop. The fourth begins pianissimo, isolated notes on lowest pedals. (Mh17) Hommage à Buxtehude Good-humored toccata, then fantasy on a repeated note motif. Dissonant but light. (Mh17) Job Mammoth 43`organ work in 8 movements, each headed by a verse from Job. The strategy resembles Messiaen`s, but the music is craggier and I suspect less tightly organized. (1) Destiny: Job is stricken. Deep pedals for terror, toccata for agitation. (2) Faith: The Lord gives and takes away: Flutes sound the Gregorian Exsultet interrupted by terrible loud dissonance – agitation has turned to trudging, but ends, after another interruption, with muted Gloria. (3) Acceptance: After another outcry, Job is given a Bach chorale tune, “Wer nur den lieben Gott,” a hymn of faith – wild dissonances followed again by chorale. (4) Longing for Death: a passacaglia builds to climax and ends in whimpering ppp. (5) Despair and Resignation: Job`s questioning and outbursts of anger, followed by legato line of submission. (6) Mystery of Creation: eerie quiet chords and flutings, crescendo – rapid staccato chords, accelerando as if building anger – block chords fortissimo – solo flute question. (7) Penitance and Realization: Solo reed with ponderous pedal – chattering, hardly abject! – final bit based on Veni Creator.
