Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation. -

Catherine Johnson TELE-BRANDING IN TVIII The network as brand and the programme as brand In the era of TVIII, characterised by deregulation, multimedia conglomeration, expansion and increased competition, branding has emerged as a central industrial practice. Focusing on the case of HBO, a particularly successful brand in TVIII, this paper argues that branding can be understood not simply as a feature of television networks, but also as a characteristic of television programmes. It begins by examining how the network as brand is constructed and conveyed to the consumer through the use of logos, slogans and programmes. The role of programmes in the construction of brand identity is then complicated by examining the sale of programmes abroad, where programmes can be seen to contribute to the brand identity of more than one network. The paper then goes on to examine programme merchandising, an increasingly central strategy in TVIII. Through an analysis of different merchandising strategies the paper argues that programmes have come to act as brands in their own right, and demonstrates that the academic study of branding not only reveals the development of new industrial practices, but also offers a way of understanding the television programme and its consumption by viewers in a period when the texts of television are increasingly extended across a range of media platforms. TVIII, at least at this juncture, must be considered the age of brand marketing. Part I Part of the problem FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CBS Cleans House : Rural Shows Out, Law and Order in No Beverly Hillbillies? No Hee Haw? No Andy Griffith or Mayberry R.F.D . or Green Acres? No. Not even Family Affair? This is CBS?? Next fall it is . The network went the rumor mill one better-it didn't just "de-ruralize" its prime-time line-up. It cleaned house as never before at a season's end . Out, besides all those "corn pone shows," as one CBS official dubbed them, went Ed Sullivan's 23-year-old vodvil hour, Jim Nabors, Men at Law, The Interns, Hogan's Heroes, To Rome with Love and Lassie . Altogether. 13 series, to be replaced by eight new ones (four hours a week having to be turned back to local outlets under the FCC's new three-hour rule) . The new entries : a 90-minute movie made for TV (giving CBS three movie nights weekly) ; Glenn Ford in Cade's County, hopefully a 1971 version of Gunsmoke ; William Conrad as Cannon, a 1971 private-eye modeled after Dick Boone's role in Have Gun-Will Travel: David Janssen as O'Hara, a Treasury agent ; Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole in an unnamed drama about two 1914-style crime chasers ; Dick Van Dyke in the role of a small-town Johnny Carson ; Sandy Duncan in Funny Face, based on a 1957 Audrey Hepburn-Fred Astaire movie ; and Dean Jones in The Chicago Teddy Bears, ribbing Chicago's 1920 gang days . Conspicuously missing from the line-up : Jackie Gleason. -

Teaching HBO’s The Wire July 2011 Teaching HBO’s The Wire Dr. Andrew Moore, St. Thomas University Author’s Contact Information Dr. Andrew Moore Assistant Professor Great Books Programme St. Thomas University, Fredericton, NB, E3B-5G3 Phone: (506) 292-5007 email: [email protected] Abstract: My intention in this paper is to address some of the challenges and advantages of incorporating television programming into a traditional liberal arts course, drawing upon my own experience teaching the third season of HBO’s crime drama The Wire. First appearing on HBO in 2002, The Wire’s incisive and expansive analysis of contemporary urban communities has increasingly made it a subject of scholarly interest. My argument here is that the series is culturally significant and potentially useful in a wide variety of courses on diverse subjects. However, there are problems with teaching television at the university level, such as limited class time, and students unaccustomed to critically engaging with the medium. I describe how my class addressed those challenges, and suggest ways other teachers might overcome them when teaching The Wire or any other television program. Also, citing student reactions to The Wire from our course blog, I outline the key lessons our class was able to derive from the series. Their comments suggest the wide array of pedagogical possibilities for HBO’s critically acclaimed crime drama, and for television more generally. A HISTORICAL/CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TV SERIES THE FUGITIVE THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the University of North Texas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE By David P. Pierson, B.S. Denton, Texas May, 1993 Pierson, David P., A Historical/Critical Analysis Of The TV Series The Fugitive. Master of Science (Radio/TV/Film), May 1993, 168 pp., bibliography, 70 titles. In many respects, the popular 1960's television series, The Fugitive perfectly captured the swelling disillusionment with authority, alienation, and discontent that soon encompassed American society. This historical/critical study provides a broad overview of the economic, social, and political climate that surrounded the creation of The Fugitive. The primary focus of this study is the analysis of five discursive topics (individualism, marriage, justice & authority, professionalism, science and technology) within selected episodes and to show how they relate to broader cultural debates which occurred at that time. Finally, this study argues that The Fui1gitive is a part of a television adventure subgenre which we may classify as the contemporary "wanderer-hero" narrative and traces its evolution through selected television series from the last three decades.
