From age 4 to 14, most of his life was spent at a Jesuit boarding school in Beirut. Parallel to his schooling, he trained independently using the school’s organ, deciphering the repertoire of the Jesuits. At the age of 20, Yared stopped his law studies to work as a professional music composer. He studied with Henri Dutilleux and Maurice Ohana and went on to work as a composer, orchestrator and producer for such singers as Françoise Hardy, Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Bécaud and Mireille Mathieu. He made his film debut in 1980 with the score for Jean-Luc Godard's Every Man for Himself (1980). Since then, Yared has devoted most of his time to composing film scores - more than a hundred so far - many of which have earned him prestigious awards. In 1997, his international fame earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award for Anthony Minghella's film "The English Patient" and he has been nominated for two others: Cold Mountain (2003) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). Yared also composes for dance, with prestigious choreographers such as Carolyn Carlson and Roland Petit having entrusted him with the writing of music for ballet. Robson1 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract The index to the 2018 VideoHound Guide to Films suggests that under the broad heading of “revenge” there have been something in excess of 1000 flms. This appears to be the largest category in this comprehensive guide and suggests that this is, indeed, a theme which permeates the most infuential sector of popular cul- ture. These flms range from infuential and lauded flms with major directors and stars like John Ford (The Searchers (1956) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant (2015)) to “straight to video” gorefests with little artistic merit and a spe- cifc target audience (The Hills Have Eyes (1977)). There is, as the Film Guide numbers suggest much in between like Straw Dogs (1972) and Outrage (1993). The making and re-making of “revenge” flms continues with contributions in 2018 from such major stars as Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2 and Brue Willis in Death Wish. Within this body of flm is a roster of flms which allow us to speculate on the nature of the legal system and what individual and to a lesser extent commu- nity responses are likely where there appears to be a defcit of justice. One of the sub-groups within the revenge roster is a set of flms which focus on revenge by the victim for rape which are discussed for their rather diferent approach to the issue of justice.

But how? Communists and democrats felt that they had the answers, but their answers often spawned little more than disillusion, protest, and unrest. Even as much of Europe managed to bounce back from war within only a few years, anxiety was often the principle result. Conflicting national identities, the development of youth culture, and a belief among many that Europe would either sink or swim as a single political and economic unit all shaped the postwar experience. This class will explore the story of European history from the end of World War II to the “War on Terror.” Topics will include (among others) the division of Europe into East and West, the rise of the European Union, the development of separatist nationalisms, and the astonishing proliferation of youth culture that both reflected and defined what took place on the political and economic stage. The class will include a combination of readings, lectures, and films. Here is an exhilarating film made for no better purpose than to surprise and fascinate. I remember it at Toronto 1981, where it arrived unknown and unsung and won, as I recall, the festival's first audience award. Now released in a restored print, it glistens in its original magnificence. The plot is both preposterous and delightful, put together out of elements that seem chosen for their audacity. The central character is a young postman named Jules (Frederic Andrei), who races the streets on his moped, delivering special delivery mail and pausing at an opera recital to secretly record a performance by a tall, black, gorgeous American soprano named Cynthia Hawkins (Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez). He has a professional-quality Nagra recorder hidden in his bag. After the performance, he enters her dressing room with a crowd of well-wishers and steals her elegant white silk gown. Hawkins is famous for never having entered a recording studio, and we later learn she has never heard her own voice. Now Jules has the only existing tape of her singing; it is priceless, but he wants it only for himself.
