From age 4 to 14, most of his life was spent at a Jesuit boarding school in Beirut. Parallel to his schooling, he trained independently using the school’s organ, deciphering the repertoire of the Jesuits. At the age of 20, Yared stopped his law studies to work as a professional music composer. He studied with Henri Dutilleux and Maurice Ohana and went on to work as a composer, orchestrator and producer for such singers as Françoise Hardy, Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Bécaud and Mireille Mathieu. He made his film debut in 1980 with the score for Jean-Luc Godard's Every Man for Himself (1980). Since then, Yared has devoted most of his time to composing film scores - more than a hundred so far - many of which have earned him prestigious awards. In 1997, his international fame earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award for Anthony Minghella's film "The English Patient" and he has been nominated for two others: Cold Mountain (2003) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). Yared also composes for dance, with prestigious choreographers such as Carolyn Carlson and Roland Petit having entrusted him with the writing of music for ballet.
