Hunt Horse Complex Raleigh, NC Dear Members, Friends, Exhibitors and Supporters, It is with so much excitement and pleasure that the North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association Board of Directors and Annual Horse Show Committee welcomes you to the 38th NCHJA Annual Horse Show! The Annual Show is proud to celebrate our membership, recognizing not only the accomplishment of riders, trainers, owners and horses over the past year but also of the many struggles our industry and families have endured more recently. Throughout the planning of this show we did not know if we would be able to gather together at all and while we continued to hope for the best case scenario, we also cautiously made provisions for a limited show experience or none whatsoever. We hope this years show will be a chance for us all to celebrate being together (6 feet apart), enjoying the sport and the horses we love. Over the past 38 years this horse show has seen many changes but the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing are definitely one of our greatest challenges to date. We hope you will join us in addressing the need to keep our staff, competitors, family and friends safe and healthy and please follow the guidelines set forth. The Annual Show has always strived to go above and beyond with making our competitors feel welcome. Please know that while our social gatherings are just not possible this year, we hope you will still enjoy the hospitality we are able to extend. The horse show committee has put much thought into the best and safest way to conduct each event. Our schedule is much the same as years past and we hope you will enjoy all of the special events from the National Hunter Derby on Thursday evening to the USHJA Pony Derby on Sunday morning. We are most grateful for your support of the Annual Show and for the health and wellbeing of all our friends and families, Wishing you a warm welcome! • Rules for Showing
1 RULES FOR SHOWING Edition 21 Revised October 2019 EFFECTIVE 3rd February 2020 PREAMBLE The Rules for Showing are produced specifically for use at CN or lower Status Events and have been drawn up in the broadest possible terms so as to allow Organising Committees affiliated to SAEF and SASA itself, as much freedom as possible in the management of their Events and in the preparation of their schedules. It is not possible to provide for every conceivable eventuality in these rules. If there is no rule to deal specifically with a particular circumstance, or if the nearest interpretation of the pertinent rule would result in an obvious injustice, it is the duty of those responsible to make a decision based on common sense and fair play, using all technical assistance available including official video-recordings (an official video recording is considered to be a recording made by a TV network or video company hired by the organising committee) thus reflecting, as closely as possible, the intention of these rules and of the General Regulations. These rules have to be read in conjunction with the SASA General Rules and Regulations, SAEF General, Veterinary and Anti-Doping Regulations which are uniform for all disciplines falling under SAEF jurisdiction. Although the FEI does not recognise the Showing Discipline as such, the General Regulations and rules of the FEI, unless otherwise stated in these rules, still apply and in consequence, these rules are supplementary to those of the FEI in this respect. In all equestrian sports the interests of the horse must be considered paramount.

  • Riding Styles of the Iberian Peninsula by Sarah Gately-Wilson
Riding styles of the Iberian Peninsula By Sarah Gately-Wilson Today’s equestrians adopt various styles of riding as their individual preferences. To some equestrians, riding is a competitive sport; to some it is an art, to others, simply a way of life. In the middle ages, horses were the primary mode of transportation, a weapon of war, and to royalty, an art for the high school dressage. The way the horses were ridden, then and now, depended on what purpose they were being used for. In Spain, two styles of riding were known. The knights in their heavy armour rode heavy, cold-blooded warhorses. They rode with long stirrups, their legs and feet extended down and forward with their backs braced against the high cantles of their war saddles. This style of riding was known as riding a la brida. The other style of riding was on fast, agile, hot-blooded chargers that turned quickly and were used by light cavalry and hunters. These riders had short stirrups with legs bent underneath them and were balanced on the horses back with the ability to stand up or move agily on the horse. This style is known as riding a la gineta. At one time it was considered a great accomplishment of men to be able to ride in both saddles, meaning to ride both a la brida and a la gineta. It was even marked on their gravestones! As times of war subsided, the need for the horses was in agriculture, to work cattle, to thrash grain, and for royalty, a luxury item for hunts and high school dressage.
