Reading Between the Panels: A Metadata Schema for Webcomics Erin Donohue Melanie Feinberg INF 384C: Organizing Information Spring 2014 Webcomics: A Descriptive Schema Purpose and Audience: This schema is designed to facilitate access to the oftentimes chaotic world of webcomics in a systematic and organized way. I have been reading webcomics for over a decade, and the only way I could find new comics was through word of mouth or by following links on the sites of comics I already read. While there have been a few attempts at creating a centralized listing of webcomics, these collections consist only of comic titles and artist names, devoid of information about the comics’ actual content. There is no way for users to figure out if they might like a comic or not, except by visiting the site of every comic and exploring its archive of posts. I wanted a more systematic, robust way to find comics I might enjoy, so I created a schema that could be used in a catalog of webcomics. This schema presents, at a glance, the most relevant information that webcomic fans might want to know when searching for new comics. In addition to basic information like the comic’s title and artist, this schema includes information about the comic’s content and style—to give readers an idea of what to expect from a comic without having to browse individual comic websites. The attributes are specifically designed to make browsing lots of comics quick and easy. This schema could eventually be utilized in a centralized comics database and could be used to generate recommendations using mood, art style, common themes, and other attributes. -

WHAT IS ATHESIS? A thesis is an important part of any essay, expository or argumentative, because it introduces a pattern of de- velopment for the rest of your paper to follow. Think of it as a string of pearls; each pearl represents an idea within your paper, and all of the pearls have a common string running through them. That string is your thesis. • communicates your main idea in a clear, concise manner; • is more than just a general statement, fact, or question; • answers why or how questions related to the chosen topic; • is carefully worded to avoid confusion; • presents your essay’s direction and scope; and • creates a reason for your reader to keep reading. Note: different disciplines have different requirements of what constitutes an appropriate thesis. You should always consult your professor before beginning any writing assignment. While the term “thesis” may imply finality, your thesis may begin as a “working thesis” before you achieve your final focus. In many disciplines, it is helpful to research your topic and become fully immersed in it be- fore deciding upon a direction for your paper. Your thesis can always be reworked as you delve further into writing your paper. Think of your “working the- sis” in the same way you would the rough draft of your paper. As you write your essay, you may find that your thesis is either too general or too specific; at this point, it may be necessary to tweak your thesis to accu- rately reflect what you have discussed in the paper. Through this process, you will be able to identify what your paper still needs to say and what information within your paper is not necessary. -

It's the age-old struggle - the roar of the crowd on one side and the voice of your conscience on the other.” Douglas MacArthur The Essay Topic: Describe a person who acted with moral courage. What can be learned from their actions and how do the lessons relate to you? During the Holocaust, it is estimated that eleven million people were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators. Fortunately, there were many who survived. Many survivors were rescued by “ordinary” people who took extraordinary risks to become an ally. Moral courage is the ability to take a strong stand on a specific issue based on one’s personal beliefs or convictions and to defend it regardless of danger or threats to personal safety. Rescuers during the Holocaust, such as Miep Gies, Carl Lutz, Vladka Mead, Oskar Schindler, Chiune Sugihara, and Raoul Wallenberg, exemplify both courage and moral courage. They displayed courage in their ability to face difficulty, danger, and/or pain without fear; they exhibited moral courage when they acted on their own values and beliefs to spare the lives of others at the risk of jeopardizing their own. Their actions serve as a model of personal triumph over adversity and inspire others to act accordingly. Step 1: Contextual Research: learn more about the history of the Holocaust, and investigate at least two of the stories of the rescuers mentioned above to inspire you to research and write your own essay on moral courage. -

International Journal of Communication 9(2015), 818–838 1932–8036/20150005 Piracy Versus Privacy: An Analysis of Values Encoded in the PirateBrowser BALÁZS BODÓ University of Amsterdam, Institute for Information Law The Netherlands The PirateBrowser is a Web browser that uses Tor privacy-enhancing technology to circumvent nationally implemented Internet filters blocking access to The Pirate Bay. This article analyzes the possible consequences of a mass influx of copyright pirates into the privacy domain. The article addresses the effects of the uptake of strong privacy technologies by pirates on copyright enforcement and on free speech and privacy technology domains. Also discussed are the norms and values reflected in the specific design choices taken by the developers of the PirateBrowser. Keywords: piracy, privacy, Tor, privacy-enhancing technologies, policy Introduction Tor (The Onion Router), “endorsed by Egyptian activists, WikiLeaks, NSA, GCHQ, Chelsea Manning, Snowden” (Dingledine & Appelbaum, 2013), is a volunteer network of computers that relays Web traffic through itself to provide anonymous, unobserved, and uncensored access to the Internet. It has about 4,000 relays and about 1,000 exit nodes. Tor users connect to the network, and their Web traffic is channeled through the internal relays to reach its final destination through one of the exit nodes. This arrangement makes the identification and surveillance of Tor users difficult. Anonymity is promised by the difficulty of tracing the Web traffic that appears on the exit node back to the individual who initiated the traffic, as long as there is a sufficient number of internal hops in between. Protection from surveillance is granted by the fact that each link in the communication chain is encrypted. -
