Most likely there are still errors – please report them to me so I can fix them in later versions! When reading the notes, you should also do the exercises which test your under- standing and flesh out the concepts with explicit examples and calculations. Doing the exercises is what makes you learn this (and any other) topic! 1.2 Time and Place This is a three-hour course. Lectures will be on Wednesday from 14 to 16 and on Friday from 9 to 10. Since lecture period is from April 12 to July 23, with a break from May 25 to 29, i.e. 14 weeks, and Dies Academicus on Wednesday May 19, there will be 13 two-hour and 14 one-hour lectures. The problem sheets, lecture notes (chapter by chapter, delayed with respect to the lecture) and further information will be posted on http://www.th.physik.uni-bonn.de/nilles/people/luedeling/grouptheory/ 1.3 Tutorials There are three tutorial groups: Monday 10–12, Raum 5 AVZ, Thomas Wotschke • Tuesday 10–12, Raum 5 AVZ, Daniel Lopes • Wednesday 10–12, Raum 118 AVZ (H¨orsaal), Marco Rauch. • Problems will be handed out in week n, solved during the week, collected and discussed in week n + 1, corrected during the next week and returned in week n + 2. Problems can be solved in groups of two students. 5 1.4 Exam and Requirements To be allowed in the exam, a student needs to have obtained 50 % of the problem sheet points AND presented two solution on the blackboard. Exam will be written the on the first Tuesday after the term, July 27. If required, a resit will be offered at the end of the term break, i.e. late September or early October. 1.5 Literature There are many books on this subject, ranging from formal to applied. Generally recommended for particle theorists. 7 Chapter 2 Groups: General Properties 2.1 Motivation: Why Group Theory? Why are there lectures called “Group Theory for Physicists”? In the end, this is a math- ematical subject, so why don’t students interested in the topic attend a mathematics lecture? After all, there are very few lectures like “Number Theory for Physicists”. This is captured in a statement made by James Jeans in 1910 while discussing a syllabus1: “We may as well cut out the group theory. That is a subject that will never be of any use in physics.” Only few decades later, however, Heisenberg said2 “We will have to abandon the philosophy of Democritus and the concept of elementary particles. We should accept instead the concept of elementary symmetries.” This explains why group theory is im- portant in almost any area

To start with, the one-to-one correspondence be- tween linear relativistic field equations and unitary representations of the isometry group is reviewed. In turn, the method of induced representa- tions reduces the problem of classifying the representations of the Poincar´e group ISO(D 1, 1) to the classification of the representations of the sta- − bility subgroups only. Therefore, an exhaustive treatment of the two most important classes of unitary irreducible representations, corresponding to massive and massless particles (the latter class decomposing in turn into the “helicity” and the “infinite-spin” representations) may be performed via the well-known representation theory of the orthogonal groups O(n) (with D 4 <n<D ).     Appendix A Group Theory This appendix is a survey of only those topics in group theory that are needed to understand the composition of symmetry transformations and its consequences for fundamental physics. It is intended to be self-contained and covers those topics that are needed to follow the main text. Although in the end this appendix became quite long, a thorough understanding of group theory is possible only by consulting the appropriate literature in addition to this appendix. In order that this book not become too lengthy, proofs of theorems were largely omitted; again I refer to other monographs. From its very title, the book by H. Georgi [211] is the most appropriate if particle physics is the primary focus of interest. The book by G. Costa and G. Fogli [102] is written in the same spirit. Both books also cover the necessary group theory for grand unification ideas. A very comprehensive but also rather dense treatment is given by [428]. Still a classic is [254]; it contains more about the treatment of dynamical symmetries in quantum mechanics. A generalized Lie group is a topological group G such that the set LG = Hom(R, G) of continuous homomorphisms from the reals R into G has certain Lie algebra and locally convex topological vector space structures. The full subcategory rr of f-bounded (r positive real number) generalized Lie groups is shown to be left complete. The class of locally compact groups is contained in T. Various prop- erties of generalized Lie groups G and their locally convex topological Lie algebras LG = Horn (R, G) are investigated. 1. Introduction. The category FT of finite dimensional Lie groups does not admit arbitrary Cartesian products. Therefore we shall enlarge the category £r to the category T of generalized Lie groups introduced by K. Hofmann in [ll]^1) The category T contains well-known subcategories, such as the category of compact groups [11], the category of locally compact groups (see §5) and the category of finite dimensional De groups. Because few people seem to be aware of quasi p-groups, we will begin with a bit of history and a definition; and then we will determine for each group of order less than 24 (and a few others) whether the group is a quasi p-group for some prime p or not. This paper is a prequel to [Hwd]. In [Hwd] we prove that (Z3 £Z3)oZ2 and Z5 o Z4 are quasi 2-groups. Those proofs now form a portion of Proposition (12.1) It should also be noted that [Hwd] may also be found in this journal. Section One: Why should we be interested in quasi p-groups? In a 1957 paper titled Coverings of algebraic curves [Abh2], Abhyankar conjectured that the algebraic fundamental group of the affine line over an algebraically closed field k of prime characteristic p is the set of quasi p-groups, where by the algebraic fundamental group of the affine line he meant the family of all Galois groups Gal(L=k(X)) as L varies over all finite normal extensions of k(X) the function field of the affine line such that no point of the line is ramified in L, and where by a quasi p-group he meant a finite group that is generated by all of its p-Sylow subgroups.
