Considering Ethical Questions in (Non)Fiction: Reading and Writing About Graphic Novels
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Considering Ethical Questions in (Non)Fiction: Reading and Writing about Graphic Novels Gene McQuillan Kingsborough Community College /The City University of New York Brooklyn, NY, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT Teachers often feature graphic novels in college courses, and recent research notes how these texts can help make the process of reading more engaging as well as more complex. Graphic novels help enhance a variety of “literacies”; they offer bold representations of people dealing with trauma or marginalization; they explore how “texts” can be re-invented; they exemplify how verbal and visual texts are often adapted; they are ideal primers for introducing basic concepts of “post-modernism.” However, two recurring textual complications in graphic novels can pose difficulties for students who are writing about ethical questions. First, graphic novels often present crucial scenes by relying heavily on the use of verbal silence (or near silence) while emphasizing visual images; second, the deeper ethical dimensions of such scenes are suggested rather than discussed through narration or dialogue. This article will explain some of the challenges and options for writing about graphic novels and ethics. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

How this interaction effects significant change. Considers political activism for civil rights and against the Vietnam War as they intersect with the development of rock and roll, R&B, acoustic and political folk music, and post-bebop jazz. Announcing the PIX 2017 Special Guests
Announcing the PIX 2017 Special Guests Anya Davidson brings a diverse background and skill set to her comics making practice. Her work often pairs the work-a-day world with the world of fantasy; blending the quotidian and the fantastic. Her most recent works are Band for Life (Fantagraphics; 2016), a pæan to life in a band, and Lovers in the Garden (Retrofit; 2017), a ‘70s urban genre drama. Lane Milburn was a founding member of the Closed Captions Comics Cooperative that came together in the mid-00s at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). He is noted for hand crafted comics like The Mage’s Tower (2008). His epic science fiction graphic novel Twelve Gems was published in 201. He has continued to make innovative use of genre comics tropes and conventions in comics such as Spectral Worlds. Ed Piskor is a Made-in-Pittsburgh comics success story. He got his first big break from Harvey Pekar with whom he went on to have numerous collaborations. Piskor then dove head first into the world of self-publishing, with Wizzywig, his tale of phone-phreakers and proto-hackers before launching Hip Hop Family Tree, which has since grown to be a global sensation, connecting the worlds of hip hop and comics. PLEASE NOTE: Ed Piskor’s primary appearance at PIX 2017 will be 7 - 10pm on the evening of Saturday, April 8 at the opening of his exhibition, Hermetically Sealed, at The ToonSeum. Jim Rugg is a comics industry legend based here in Pittsburgh, PA. A tireless technical innovator, Rugg has steadily added to the visual vocabulary of comics, with his game-changing use of Photoshop and dynamic layouts. -

The Pied Piper of Cleveland Was the Title of a Film Produced in November 1955 Documenting the Career of Disc Jockey Bill Randle
The Pied Piper of Cleveland was the title of a film produced in November 1955 documenting the career of disc jockey Bill Randle. The full title of the film is The Pied Piper of Cleveland: A Day in the Life of a Famous Disc Jockey. Arthur Cohen, directed, and Bill Randle produced. The film showcases live performances of Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Pat Boone, LaVern Baker, Roy Hamilton, Johnnie Ray and others. The original forty‐eight minute film was supposed to be cut down to a twenty minute "short" for national distribution, but has never made it that far. There is some dispute over whether or not this film actually exists, as it was only shown publicly once. Randle has repeatedly asserted that the film does indeed exist. Due to problems over legal ownership, the film has not been officially released, and remains 'misplaced' to this day. It is reported that Universal Studios has the negatives of the film in its vaults. This film is the first on‐screen appearance of Elvis Presley. Weekend Edition ‐ Saturday, October 29, 2005 ∙ Fifty years ago this month, a high school in suburban Cleveland played host to an early concert appearance by Elvis Presley. Cleveland disc jockey Bill Randle regularly used his influence to stage afternoon music assemblies at local high schools, and Elvis' Oct. 20, 1955 performance at Brooklyn High School was captured as part of a documentary about Randle. But, soon after that, the film disappeared and ever since, the missing footage has become the holy grail of Elvis fans. New Jersey musician Chris Kennedy grew up in a family of Elvis fans, and has made it his mission to find the footage. -
