These sand-covered, coral reef islands rise only a few feet above the waterline and are home to fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, spread out over an area the size of Western Europe. Reminiscent of the southern atolls in the Maldives, divers flock to the Tuamotus to see large schools of fish and pelagics swimming in the swift currents that flow through the passes between islands. They will brief your groups about how to move around the Museum and direct you to areas of the Museum you intend to visit. BAG STORAGE There is limited bag storage available on site. It is recommended that students just bring a small carry bag with the essentials for the day, however if required, storage can be provided depending on availability. EXHIBITIONS In addition to any booked educator-led sessions, students and teachers may explore the Museum’s exhibitions in their own time. Some special exhibitions may incur an additional charge. It is suggested that students visit the galleries in small groups to prevent overcrowding. LUNCH AND BREAKS It is recommended that students bring their recess and lunch and eat in Hyde Park or Cook & Phillip Park, both of which are across the road from the Museum. Alternative arrangements will be provided in the case of wet weather. BYOD AND PHOTOGRAPHY Students are encouraged to bring their own devices to take photos, video and/or audio to record their excursion. THE ART OF THE DRUM: THE RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL DYNAMIC OF DRUMMING AND DRUM CRAFTING IN FIJI, JAPAN, INDIA, MOROCCO AND CUBA JESSE BROWNER-HAMLIN THE BRISTOL FELLOWSHIP HAMILTON COLLEGE WWW.THEARTOFTHEDRUM.BLOGSPOT.COM AUGUST 2007 – AUGUST 2008 2 In the original parameters of my Bristol Fellowship, I aspired to investigate the religious and spiritual dynamic of drumming and drum crafting in Fiji, Japan, India, Morocco, the Dominican Republic, and Trinidad and Tobago. As any academic will attest, field research tends to march to beat of its own drum, if you will. The beauty of my fellowship was that I could have conducted the research in just about any country in the world. Music is everywhere; and moreover, drums are the oldest instrument known to man. Along the way, I modestly altered the itinerary: in the end, I conducted research in Fiji, Japan, India, Western Europe, Morocco and Cuba. It truly was a remarkable experience to have full autonomy over my research: I am infinitely grateful that the Bristol Family and Hamilton College (represented by Ginny Dosch) gave me the freedom to modify my itinerary as I saw fit. To be successful while conducting field research, you need to be flexible. While several of my hypotheses from my proposal were examined and tested, I often found myself in unscripted situations. The daily unpredictability of the fellowship is what makes it such a profound and exciting experience, as every day is an adventure. With the blessing of technology, this fellowship was carried out in “real time.” Because I actively maintained a website, www.theartofthedrum.blogspot.com, my research and multimedia were posted almost instantaneously, and thus, my family and friends back in the States could read about my experiences, see my pictures and watch my videos. -

1 Gallery Guide St. Louis, A Musical Gateway: OCEANIA Oceania is a geographic region that is made up of thousands of islands throughout the Central and South Pacific Ocean. It spans both the eastern and western hemispheres and includes the three island regions of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia and the continent of Australia. This exhibit is the third in a series that celebrates St. Louis’ multicultural heritage communities. It features rare and beautiful instruments of the Far East and Oceania drawn from the Hartenberger World Music Collection of Historical Instruments Dr. Aurelia & Jeff Hartenberger, Karrie Bopp, Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger and Kevin Hartenberger. 2 Oceania The tension and vitality of the people in the Oceania region of the world is reflected their rich musical traditions and in the skillful construction of their musical instruments. These instruments were made to accompany the telling of stories, and the singing and chanting of songs, as it is from these sources of knowledge that history of the old traditions and cultures were told and preserved. In the Melanesia region of Papua New Guinea and eastern Indonesia you will see the fancifully carved flutes, slit drums, the distinctive handheld hourglass drums, and a full-body fiber mask from the Asmat people of western New Guinea. Polynesian instruments include the many hand tapping gourd drums, flutes, shell trumpets and of course the Hawaiian ukuleles. From New Zealand are the Maori instruments that today, have all but disappeared. Micronesia includes the Palau Island ceremonial Triton shell trumpet, and from Australia, is the aboriginal people’s iconic didgeridoo accompanied by traditional clap sticks. -

In addition, many of the peoples of Africa have experienced colonial oppression. Various powers have sought to interfere with intra-cultural dialogues and the free flow of information. Their effectiveness, however, was limited because of the talking drums. These drums are speech surrogates. Messages are relayed on them in a codal form. This form is based on the tonal language of the specific speech community. The premise of this paper is that the form is a. language. The language is poetic in style, but restric- tive in nature. It can be analyzed and components of various speech events can be investigated. With this information, one can better understand how aspeech com- munity categorizes its experiences.
