Auwahi: Ethnobotany of a Hawaiian Dryland Forest

Social Sciences Department, Maui Community College, 310 Ka’ahumanu Ave., Kahului, HI 96732 ABSTRACT Auwahi district on East Maui extends from sea level to about 6800 feet (1790 meters) elevation at the southwest rift of leeward Haleakal¯a volcano. In botanical references, Auwahi currently refers to a centrally located, fairly large (5400 acres) stand of diverse dry forest at 3000-5000 feet (915- 1525 meters) elevation surrounded by less diverse forest and more open-statured shrubland on lava. Auwahi contains high native tree diversity with 50 dryland species, many with extremely hard, durable, and heavy wood. To early Hawaiians, forests like Auwahi must have seemed an invaluable source of unique natural materials, especially the wide variety of woods for tool making for agriculture and fishing, canoe building, kapa making, and weapons. Of the 50 species of native trees at Auwahi, 19 species (38%) are known to have been used for medicine, 13 species (26%) for tool-making, 13 species (26%) for canoe building 13 species (26%) for house building, 8 species (16%) for tools for making kapa, 8 species (16%) for weapons 8 species (16%) for fishing, 8 species (16%) for dyes, and 7 species (14 %) for religious purposes. Other miscellaneous uses include edible fruits or seeds, bird lime, cordage, a fish narcotizing agent, firewood, a source of "fireworks", recreation, scenting agents, poi boards, and h¯olua sled construction. -

Molecular Phylogeny, Revised Higher Classification, and Implications for Conservation of Endangered Hawaiian Leaf-Mining Moths (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Philodoria)1 Chris A. Johns,2,3,5 Matthew R. Moore,4 and Akito Y. Kawahara2,3,4 Abstract: The leaf-mining moth genus Philodoria Walsingham (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) is composed of 30 described species, all of which are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Philodoria is known to feed on 10 families of endemic Hawaiian host plants, with several species recorded only from threatened or en- dangered hosts. Beyond their dependence on these plants, little is known of their evolutionary history and conservation status. We constructed a molecular phy- logeny of Philodoria to assess validity of its current subgeneric classification and to help guide future work on this threatened Hawaiian lineage. Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences from three genes (CO1, CAD, EF-1α) combining for a total of 2,041 base pairs, were collected from 11 Philodoria species, incorpo- rating taxa from both currently recognized subgenera. These data were analyzed using both parsimony and model-based phylogenetic approaches. Contrary to the most recent systematic treatment of Philodoria, our results indicate strongly that the two currently recognized Philodoria subgenera are not monophyletic and that morphological characters used to classify them are homoplasious. Based on our robust results, we revised the higher classification ofPhilodoria: the subgenus Eophilodoria Zimmerman, 1978 is established as subjective junior synonym of Philodoria Walsingham, 1907. We also present new host plant and distribution data and discuss host range of Philodoria as it pertains to endangered Hawaiian plants. Philodoria WALSINGHAM, 1907 (Lepidoptera: cromoths that currently includes 30 described Gracillariidae) is a genus of leaf-mining mi- species, all of which are endemic to the Ha- waiian Islands (Zimmerman 1978). -

The Dry Forests of Oahu, Hawaii, NEED HELP
OAHU DATA FACTS, FIGURES & SPECIES LIST The Dry Forests of Oahu, Hawaii, NEED HELP. The Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the world’s most endangered forests. The most endangered dry forests are on the island of Oahu, which contains less than 0.2% native dry forest (1.7 km2) with less than 30% protected in reserves (0.5 km2). A total of 68 native tree and shrub species have been identified in the dry forest region of Oahu and 45% have been identified as threatened species according to the IUCN and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Since 2000, thirteen organizations (federal, state, private) have been involved in restoration efforts of Hawaiian dry forests at 18 locations in Oahu. However, additional extensive restoration efforts are still needed in mixed native and non-native dry forests on Oahu and in low elevation urban and rural areas. The restoration of this forest type will be of central importance to removing species from threatened and endangered species lists and preventing additional species from being listed.
