Post-Civil War Industrialization Following the Civil War, Tennessee Entered Into a Period of Industrialization
Post-Civil War Industrialization Following the Civil War, Tennessee entered into a period of industrialization. This shift was due in part to the damage the war had inflicted on Tennessee’s economy. It was also due to investments from people outside of Tennessee. Many Northerners had been in Tennessee during the Civil War and saw opportunities for investing after the war was over. Northerners who moved South after the war to take advantage of business opportunities were called “carpetbaggers,” because many of the investors carried their belongings in satchels made from heavyweight, carpet-like fabric. Railroads were one of the first industries to be developed after the war. A number of important railroad lines ran through Tennessee before the war, but many of them had been either deliberately or accidentally damaged during the war. After the war, Tennessee’s railroads were repaired and new ones were built, and this expansion of railroads was a key factor in the growth of other industries, especially coal mining.1 Coal had been mined in the Cumberland Plateau region since before the Civil War. By the 1850s coal was replacing wood as the fuel of choice in homes and industries. As Tennessee’s railroads expanded after the war, the need for coal grew as well. Another factor that helped Tennessee’s coal mining industry evolve was the convict labor system.2 Though the 13th Amendment outlawed slavery, a clause in the amendment allowed people convicted of crimes, or convicts, to be forced to work during their prison term. Foreword Missouri Has a History of Diversity in Geography, the Economy, Culture and People
Foreword Missouri has a history of diversity in geography, the economy, culture and people. The state is well known for its ability to adapt to the changes required to accommodate this diversity. Among the changes that are occurring is the influx of immigrants from around the world. The changing of the colors of Missouri is, once again, providing a set of challenges to respond to. The most notable change in the faces and colors of Missouri in recent years is the increase of Latino and Hispanic peoples in both rural and urban areas. These new Missourians are contributing significantly to the local and state economy as well as to the social progress of the state. Because these new immigrants speak a different language and represent different cultures and values, we need to acknowledge and welcome their contributions and make an extra effort to weave and integrate them into the rich societal tapestry that results from such a change. Sylvia Lazos and Stephen Jeanetta together have studied and documented the current status of Latino and Hispanic people in the state. This critical and most timely research effort identifies the important issues that businesses, social services and community agencies need to consider in developing appropriate public policy issues that should be addressed. I urge you to use the knowledge included in this monograph to help create a Missouri that values each person and affords the equality of opportunity and individual rights that each person deserves. This is the right thing to do. Historic Markers (Legacy Map) Based on Historical Markers Numbe Civil War Year Erected Marker Text r Site? 6 1968 Loring's division of Stewart's Corps, Hood's Confederate Army of Tennessee, fought behind this TRUE stone wall Dec. 16, 1864. All Federal attacks were beaten back until the Confederate line was broken a mile to the west. The division retreated south through the hills toward Brentwood. 90 1992 Founded in 1915 as the successor to The Winthrop Model School at the University of Nashville, Peabody Demonstration School was established at this site in 1925 to utilize the teacher training methods developed at George Peabody College for Teachers. It became an independent institution in 1975 and was renamed University School of Nashville. 168 2018 Revolutionary War Pvt. John Alford built a two-room house on this land c. 1810, expanding it in 1812 and 1820. The Alford cemetery retains three markers that were placed as early as 1822. The c.1830 brick two-story Federal dwelling was home to James F. May, grandson of Knoxville founder Gen. James White. May purchased the land in 1837 and resided here until his death. James T. Granbery inherited and restored the house in 1939, and established Seven Springs Farm on the estate. 19 1969 Meharry Medical College, established in 1876 through the efforts of Dr. George W. Hubbard, Dr. William J. Sneed, and Samuel Meharry, is the only AMA Accredited, privately endowed, predominantly Negro medical school in the world. During its first 90 years of service, it trained more Negro physicians and dentists than any other institution. -

WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Jane G. Eskind, a groundbreaking leader for women's rights, education, and the arts and the first woman to win statewide elected office in Tennessee; and WHEREAS, a true champion for progress and social justice, Jane Eskind was the first woman to chair the Tennessee Democratic Party and was prominent as a national political leader for decades; and WHEREAS, Vice President Albert Gore, Jr., said, "I saw her stand up to prejudice, speak out against injustice, and work her heart out for all the people of Tennessee and for her beloved nation."; and WHEREAS, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, Jane Eskind was educated at Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts, and the University of Louisville; she relocated to Nashville in 1956 with her husband, Richard J. Eskind; and WHEREAS, the first woman to run for statewide office in Tennessee, Jane Eskind won the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate in 1978; facing an uphill battle against popular incumbent Senator Howard Baker, Jr., her inspirational campaign won admiration across the State and the nation, including from President Jimmy Carter who came to Tennessee to campaign for her; and WHEREAS, although unsuccessful in her effort at that time, Mrs. Eskind quickly became a national political leader and served twice on the Democratic National Platform Committee; she
