However, since the pandemic arrived in our communities, we have devoted an enormous amount of time and effort developing and implementing policies and procedures to not only protect our patients and their families, but our providers as well. Unfortunately, many people have avoided getting recommended cancer screenings and care due to fear of being exposed to COVID-19 and, for the first time in many years, we are seeing an upward trend in the number of cancers diagnosed.

We are confident that the innovations we have put in place, which include strictly following the guidance of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for in-person visits, and offering alternative ways to get care such as video visits and telephone consultations, will encourage more members of our community to get the care they need when they need it.

As further evidence of our commitment to safely provide patients with the highest quality care, MedStar Health Cancer Network empowers a multidisciplinary Cancer Committee—a dedicated team of individuals who oversee our efforts to meet At MedStar Health Cancer Network, our highest the rigorous standards required to earn recognition priority is, and always will be, making sure that from some of the nation’s most highly regarded we are effectively meeting the needs of our accrediting bodies. Certification from the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative program; and Accreditation from the American College of Radiology in CT, MRI, and ultrasound.

In addition, the Breast Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center recently completed its fourth survey by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, an accreditation the Breast Center has held for the past 12 years. We are currently awaiting the results. And, in January 2020, the MedStar Franklin Square Cancer Center embarked upon a new journey—to obtain the America College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer National Accreditation for Rectal Cancer. Having spent the past year laying the groundwork, the Cancer Center recently submitted its accreditation application to begin the official survey process.

Meanwhile, all of our patients continue to benefit from our multidisciplinary approach to care, which culminates in a customized, comprehensive treatment plan unique to each individual. Patients have a full range of sophisticated, proven, and

3 As in past years, we provided ongoing support to our physicians by offering continuing medical education (CME) opportunities. This included a Multidisciplinary Symposium on Cancer Care, our first virtual CME conference, which featured an expert faculty who highlighted some of the most recent developments in cancer care. This free CME event was viewed by more than 60 providers.

MedStar Health continues to collaborate with Indivumed, a German-based oncology research company whose goal is to individualize anti-cancer medical therapies through state-of- the-art biospecimen collection, preservation, and analysis. The collaboration provides MedStar Health with resources to build and support a network-wide biobank of high quality annotated biospecimen. Under the direction of Albert Aboulafia, MD, the MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center Team has contributed over 150 patients to the biobank which includes samples from MedStar Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Under Dr. Aboulafia’s leadership, the team has expanded its recruitment efforts to include healthy controls and is piloting software for remote consent. Biobank samples are available for use by MedStar affiliated researchers, for more information please contact [email protected].

While the pandemic limited our opportunities in terms of community outreach, we were able to safely conduct our ongoing screening programs for breast and cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer. Plus, we once again collaborated with WMAR/ABC2 to offer two “House Calls,” live chat events with our physician experts. Designed to make it easy for members of the community to ask questions and get answers about cancer prevention, we hosted one during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the other during Viewers of WMAR/ABC2 had the opportunity to chat with physician experts about cancer during “House Calls,” a live event presented Lung Cancer Awareness Month. in collaboration with MedStar Health Cancer Network.
