Sebaliknya, beliau berkata, isterinya tidak mempunyai sebarang pertalian kekeluargaan dengan jutawan tersebut. Sambil menafikan khabar angin mengenai perkara itu, Shahrir berkata: "Isteri saya berbangsa Cina tetapi beliau berasal dari Ipoh, bukan dari Johor. Saya langsung tiada pertalian kekeluargaan dengan beliau (Robert Kuok). “Saya tidak berkahwin dengan anaknya, saya tidak berkahwin dengan anak saudaranya dan saya tidak berkahwin dengan mana-mana anggota keluarga Kuok. Semua ini khabar angin," katanya menjawab soalan pemberita selepas menutup forum pendidikan anjuran umno Johor Bahru. Menurut laporan Bernama, Shahrir berkata, Kuok tidak mempunyai anak perempuan dan khabar angin yang mengaitkan beliau sebagai mempunyai pertalian kekeluargaan dengan ahli perniagaan itu mungkin disebabkan beliau (Shahrir) lantang menyuarakan pendapatnya dalam isu-isu kontroversi. "Ramai orang berpendapat bahawa seorang ahli politik yang banyak buat bising mesti seorang yang sangat kaya, dan iaitu saya, kerana saya mungkin mempunyai kira-kira 10 peratus kekayaan Kuok iaitu kira-kira RM2 bilion hingga RM3 bilion, saya boleh sewenang-wenangnya cakap apa sahaja yang saya suka," katanya selepas menutup forum pendidikan anjuran Umno Johor Bahru. Merendah diri Shahrir berkata, beliau mengenali Kuok sejak sekian lama dan yakin bahawa Johor dan Wilayah Pembangunan Iskandar (WPI) akan mendapat banyak kebaikan daripada kepintaran dan pengalamannya sebagai seorang ahli perniagaan. Kuok ialah seorang daripada lima penasihat Pihak Berkuasa Wilayah Pembangunan Iskandar (IDRA), yang mengadakan mesyuarat pertama semalam. Shahrir berkata, Kuok dapat menasihatkan IDRA mengenai bagaimana untuk menarik pelaburan ke WPI. Beliau juga berkata, sebuah akhbar tempatan turut menghubungi beliau untuk meminta bantuannya mengaturkan temuramah dengan ahli perniagaan yang suka merendah diri itu tetapi beliau enggan berbuat demikian. Ditanya sama ada beliau terganggu dengan khabar angin itu, Shahrir berkata beliau langsung tidak terjejas dengannya. "Saya runsing kerana saya sebenarnya tidak punya wang. Walaupun Kuok tidak mempunyai anak perempuan, saya kenal dengan anak-anaknya. Saya kenal anak saudaranya dan adakalanya saya berjumpa mereka. Saya minta maaf kerana mengecewakan anda semua," katanya. "Or is Najib now going to cook up a new excuse to claim that the Middle Eastern donors decided that they didn’t want to donate to him anymore and wanted their money back? "Or perhaps the prime minister after being caught with his pants down, would now argue that five months after receiving the cash, he suffered from sudden pangs of guilt and decided to voluntarily return the money to the donor?" asked Pua (photo). Minister says no comment On Saturday, whistleblower website Sarawak Report claimed that Najib returned US$650 million to Tanore Finance Ltd, incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, through a Singaporean bank. Although Sarawak Report did not offer any evidence, other aspects of its article, such as the RM1 million issued to Johor Bahru MP Shahrir Abdul Samad, has been confirmed as fact by him.

Abstract This thesis analyses UMNO factionalism from the perspective of the elite’s manipulation of the various modes of nationalisms. This thesis argues that UMNO factionalism, which is seemingly a power struggle between competing UMNO elites, has been significantly shaped by contesting nationalist ideologies that reflect the unresolved questions of national identity in Malaysia. These two issues, that is, nationalism and UMNO factionalism, have shaped Malaysian politics in significant ways. UMNO factionalism has been related to such major political events as the 1969 ethnic riots, the introduction of the New Economic Policy, the UMNO split in 1987 and the Reformasi (Reform) movement in 1998. Frequently, the impact of these disputes extended beyond UMNO politics and affected wider Malaysian politics. At the same time, due to unresolved questions of national identity, nationalism has occupied a central position in Malaysian political discourse. There are ambiguities regarding the relationships among the various ethnic identities and national identity and between the individual and the larger Malaysian community that enable elites to construct and manipulate nationalist ideologies. In this thesis, the conflicting nationalisms are captured by five different concepts of nationalism – ethnocultural, civic and multicultural nationalisms in one group and collectivist-authoritarian and individualistic-libertarian nationalisms in another.

This was despite the efforts of Najib Razak, the Prime Minister, in his campaign to win the Chinese over. That the Chinese largely voted against Barisan Nasional (BN) was evident in seats which were Chinese-majority. Nevertheless the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) also did well in mixed constituencies where the Chinese were not the majority. Opposition leaders and many commentators argued that the voting pattern in GE13 reflected not an ethnic but a regional as well as a class divide. Urban votes and a significant proportion of middle-class Malaysians, they insisted, supported Pakatan Rakyat (PR), the opposition, which gained a majority of the popular votes. This paper looks at the voting pattern of the Chinese as reflected in the results, changes in the politics of the Chinese since GE12, and ascertains what issues and concerns influenced the way the Chinese voted. It would also consider the implications the results have on Chinese representation in government and in opposition.
