For all your many kindnesses, Lisa, thank you. iv ABSTRACT THE EMPORER’S NEW CLOTHES: HOW THE NEW ATHEISTS ARE REMINDING THE HUMANITIES OF THEIR PLACE AND PURPOSE IN SOCIETY David Ira Buckner November 9, 2018 This dissertation will examine the social and intellectual impact of the so-called “New Atheism” as evidenced by the writings and public careers of its four principal protagonists: evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, philosopher Daniel Dennett, journalist Christopher Hitchens, and neuroscientist Sam Harris. I will argue that the New Atheists together provide an account of reality philosophically superior to that of theism, including those superficially sophisticated variations espoused in the writings of scholars William Lane Craig, John Lennox, Allister McGrath, Alvin Plantinga, etc. Yet, even if this were not so, I would still contend that the accessible, informative, and provocative style of the New Atheists’ prose nevertheless epitomizes precisely what academic writing could and should be. Their commitment to the Enlightenment principles of philosophical objectivity, reason, and the successes of the scientific method stands in stark contrast not only to the more malleable methodology of their religious opponents, but also to the prevailing (and ideologically- conflicting) traditions of deconstructive postmodernism and post-structuralism (as exemplified in the works of Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and others) which have greatly influenced humanities’ scholarship in recent decades. v Therefore, while I very much intend to defend the substance of the New Atheists’ arguments against the various objections of their philosophical, religious, and scientific critics, I simultaneously mean to defend their stylistic choices as well (not only against their critics but also as compared to the obscurant, equivocal, and highly subjective style so often employed by postmodernists). It is my fervent hope that even those who should ultimately disagree with either the New Atheists’ assertions or my defense of them will still be able to see the value of their (and hopefully my) clear, concise brand of communication. For theirs is a style no longer widely employed within the confines of the academy. Purposeful in a positive way, this imaginatively illustrated book should open readers’ eyes to issues facing children who live in very different circumstances.

    News and Notices SCIENCE‐SPIRIRTUALITY Templeton Prize The winner of the 2001 Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion is The Revd Canon Dr Arthur Peacocke of Oxford University. As a physical biochemist specialising in biological macromolecules, Dr Peacocke pioneered early research into the structure of DNA, showing that the chains in the molecule are not branched but form a double helix. In 1971, the one‐ time agnostic became an Anglican priest. The only Oxford University Theology faculty member to hold both a Doctor of Science and a Doctor of Divinity degree, Dr Peacocke is a strong proponent of "critical realism," holding that both science and theology aim to depict reality and must be subject to scrutiny, while recognising their creative interaction. Created by global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton in 1972, each year the Templeton Prize acknowledges a living person who has shown extraordinary originality in advancing humanity's understanding of God and the role of spirituality in people's lives. Sir John has sought to honour progress in religion just as the Nobel Prizes recognise advances in economics, medicine, and chemistry. Currently valued at £700,000 sterling, the Prize represents the world's largest annual monetary award given to an individual and is always set at a level that exceeds that of the Nobels. His interpretation of Islam is very straightforward and honest and you really have to split hairs and do some interpretive acrobatics in order to get it . to look non- canonical.” 1 This exchange took place a little more than thirteen years after bin Laden and his associates masterminded the deadliest terrorist operation on American soil. In the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001, tragedy, the notion that such violence was representative of the world’s second- largest religion was widespread enough to prompt then American president George W. Bush to counter that Islam “is a religion of peace.” Numerous skeptics have since dismissed this claim, some viewing it as nothing more than a politically correct token.
