It was a joyful celebration, but in those 150 years there was also sadness, as for any institution or individual. There was also fear at times and discouragement and anger and doubt. The first 2 groups of White Fathers set off from Algiers with Fr. Michael Heap MAfr hope and joy. In both cases, they were murdered by the people they trusted. Yet Cardinal Lavigèrie sent more missionaries into Africa by a different route – through East Africa to Uganda. At last the Mission had started! But the first Christians, Catholic and Anglican, were cruelly put to death, the Martyrs of Uganda. Yet the Mission carried on and now many thousands of people visit the shrine of the Martyrs of Uganda in Namugongo in trust and hope. And so it goes on. In this issue, Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald writes about the 19 mar- tyrs of North Africa, honoured by the Church and by the civil authorities.

    Christmas Eve, Parish Carol Service 24 December 2013 The Hopes and Fears of All the Years are Met in Thee Tonight A sermon by Revd Richard Carter Readings: Genesis 18.1-15; 1 Samuel 2; Isaiah 9.2, 6-7; Luke 2.6-20 I remember my father leaning out of the upstairs window to shout, “You have a baby brother!” I was playing in the garden with my elder brother, came running inside, climbed the stairs, silenced, and into the bedroom where my mother was holding this little baby wrapped in a blanket against her like a small parcel of new life. Where had this new life come from? Even at an early age I remember being simply astonished; suddenly a new person in the room. A miracle. I think all of us have felt that when we’ve seen those tiny fingernails, minute nose, and glazed eyes looking up from the bundle thrust into our hands. Never mind the immaculate conception, all births are miraculous conceptions and what is more, this particular miracle is the most inclusive miracle of them all, for every one of us, when we were born, have been there. We were all once that child. The birth of Jesus took place 2000 years ago but year after year this birth of Jesus is still celebrated. Over and over again this church in the last month has been packed with people coming to sing carols and to hear again the story of the nativity. What is it that attracts us to this story? Is it just nostalgia for the past? Is it because we love the tunes and love to sing? Is it just a tradition we follow, like turkey and crackers and Christmas pudding hyped by every store in town to make us spend, eat and drink more? Yes perhaps it is all these things and much more than all these things.

Fr Carthage O’Dea died in our infirmary on 22 November. Br John Pocock responded to God’s call to “come!” in the Maroondah Hospital, Ringwood just over a fortnight later, on 8 December. Following their Requiems on the 3rd and 15th December, the community, family and friends accompanied them on foot the short distance through the gum trees to our cemetery where they claimed the twenty-first and twenty- second spots to await the resurrection. ■ Newsletter of the Cistercian Monks | Tarrawarra Abbey | 1 Homily for the Funeral Mass for Fr Carthage O’Dea OCSO By Dom Steele Hartmann OCSO and Laurence entered the following year, with Denis for Nunraw which had no novitiate of its own at that time. Carthage made Solemn Profession in 1950, and was ordained priest in 1952. In 1954, as secretary to the abbot, he accompanied Dom Camillus to Australia to set up the foundation here at Tarrawarra. I recall Carthage saying to me that he didn’t know he was to stay on, when Camillus returned home.

  • On Contemporary Martyrs: Some Recent Literature

CUNNINGHAM [This brief ongoing survey reviews some current literature on mar- tyrs with special emphasis on those who have died for the faith in our own time. The author also addresses the claim that this literature is not only hagiographic (in the best sense of the word) but also a frequently overlooked resource for theological reflection.] RITING ABOUT saints in general and martyrs in particular has contin- W ued apace since my last survey of recent literature on hagiography.1 This present survey focuses on literature about martyrs and, more specifi- cally, modern martyrs because of the prominence that Pope John Paul II has put on that phenomenon with his insistence on the sign value of the martyr as a witness to the perennial value of the gospel and its message.2 The theological significance of martyrdom in the writings of the pope is a conspicuous characteristic of his thinking. He puts such emphasis on the theological significance of martyrdom, especially martyrdom in our day, that he singles out, among other things, the significance of those who died for the sake of Christ as a kind of primordial ecumenical bond prior to the actual workings of ecumenical reconciliation. His reflection in Ut unum sint bears remembering: In a theocentric vision, we Christians already have a common martyrology.
