Central Conversations of Our Time – Session 5

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Receiving Gifts with Grace

Conducted by Doris R. Brodeur, Ph.D.

Wednesday, May 21, 6:30 PM – 7:45 PM OLMC Classrooms 3 and 5

Please bring your Bible.

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit – wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, reverence, and piety – are acts and movements of the Spirit that purify and raise us to a divine mode of knowledge through the growth of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity (divine love). As charity grows stronger, all the gifts become more and more in evidence. The seven gifts are habitual dispositions, that is, ways of act- ing that are permanent, easy, and delightful. (Thomas Keating, Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit)

In this final session, we will reflect on the characteristics of the Holy Spirit and signs of the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the Church and the world. We will discuss the Spirit as mediator of the presence of Jesus in the Church and the world, giver of gifts of healing and unity, architect of the Church, guide to those who pray, teacher and advocate, animator of liturgy and sacramental life, and source of challenge to move us out of our complacency. We will also reflect on what it means to receive gifts with grace. TheThe ScripturalScriptural FoundationFoundation ofof ChristianChristian MoralityMorality

The most basic principle of the Christian moral life is the awareness that every person bears the dignity of being made in the image of God. He has given us an immortal soul and through the gifts of intelligence and reason enables us to understand the order of things established in his creation. God has also given us a free will to seek and love what is true, good, and beautiful. This program will examine the roots of Christian morality in the Jewish and Greek traditions and in the teachings of Jesus. The principles will be applied to moral decision making in our lives today.

Directed by Father Fred Tillotson O.Carm. S.T.L., M.A. Fridays, May 9, 16, and 23 10:30 AM – 12 PM

The program will address three fundamental themes:

May 9 An introduction to Christian morality rooted in the Jewish and Greek traditions of the pre-Christian era May 16 Christian morality rooted in the teachings of Jesus May 23 Biblical themes of Christian morality for today
