They had to travel by road or foot through harsh and unfriendly territories. Some of the migrants died along the way, and my father was one of the fortunate who survived. In the Sanaag region, my father’s family lived in the Maydh district. They were involved in the fish industry and the exportation of live- stock and animal hides, as well as timber, to the Gulf countries.

True to these seminal lines of Yusuf Xaji Adan Qabile, Magool has blos- somed ever since, destined to enthrall the Somali-speaking peoples of the Horn of Africa and beyond with her captivating voice over the next forty-plus years…never to be silenced as long as a person who speaks Somali lives on the face of the earth. On March 25, 2004, when Magool’s remains were being laid to rest amid one of the largest funeral congregations that Mogadishu has ever seen, I was in Dubai conducting interviews about her with a small group of Somali artists. The group was led by Ali Sugulle, a renowned playwright and a man who along with Sahardid Mohamed Elmi (Jabiye) was instrumental in making Magool an icon by giving her lead roles in a series of plays in the 1960s. The cohort included Ahmed Yaasin, a former Waaberi singer; Ahmed Mohamed Guutaale, a former Waaberi actor; and Jaama Ahmad Ibrahim (Baqayo), a former Djiboutian actor. Somali students at Whalley Range 11-18 High School in Manchester worked with the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre to develop the resource. Over nearly a year, we investigated typical cultural traditions, objects that have cultural resonance, and some famous Somali people. We have put our findings together so that we can share with other schools a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Somali people in Britain. Most of the generation of young Somalis currently in British schools were born and raised in the UK but many of their parents arrived as refugees, in flight from the long civil war and continued instability of their country. This resource purposely does not address the continuing conflict in Somalia. In making a new life in Britain, Somali people have worked hard to build their communities and sustain their cultural traditions. We wanted to look at these positive strengths that our students find in their culture and community.

The research will examine historic moments of goodwill, propagation, ingenuity and activism that altered the course of modern music culture in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan, where government officials, cultural ambassadors and, most significantly, musicians wield their authority, influence, popularity, instruments and voices beyond the traditional norms of their enterprise. Soundin’ Canaan (Canaan, as Canada was often referred to in spirituals during the Black migration to Canada) draws from a cross-fertilization of communicative techniques to examine how citizenship is explored by African Canadian poets’ resistive soundings. The dissertation investigates how many African Canadian poets draw from African American and pan-African musical forms (including blues, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, dub, and other improvisatory practices) in order to remap the concept of identity and citizenship within intercultural (or multicultural) spaces. I ask: what does Canadian citizenship sound like, particularly as voiced by African Canadian poets interested in a fluid citizenship that moves, like music, between local and global spaces?     Sexual Desire, Modesty and Womanhood: Somali Female Hybrid Subjectivities and the Gabar Xishood Leh Discourse by Bilan Hashi A thesis submitted to the Department of Gender Studies in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (October, 2016) Copyright ! Bilan Hashi, 2016 Abstract Extending work that examines Somali female identity, this thesis addresses how gendered subjectivity is articulated and performed within the Somali social imaginary vis-à-vis notions of “tradition,” modernity, colonialism, and post-colonialism. The project starts with the construction of an idealized Somali womanhood (what I refer to as gabar xishood leh, a modest girl), the affective pull and attachment of this identity formation, and the compulsion to perform it. In part, I illustrate how this gendered paradigm lays the conditions for being and belonging within the Somali collectivity. As the gabar xishood leh discourse is embedded with a particular conception of modesty, female desire and agency is bracketed outside the gabar xishood leh ideal. As such, this distancing precludes collective belonging and opens up real possibilities of unbelonging. The negotiation of modesty and female sexual desire is the focus of this project. I ask: how do women exert sexual agency, ‘voice,’ and modesty in ways that allow them to participate fully in the (various but often silenced) performances of Somali womanhood? In looking at classical Somali female poets (1899-1944 in pastoral lands of Northern Somalia) and modern Somali female poets (1969-1989 in the urban centre of Mogadishu, Somalia), I argue these poets have hybrid subjectivities that allow the expression of sexual desire thorough the subversion of normative codes of modesty.

The research will examine historic moments of goodwill, propagation, ingenuity and activism that altered the course of modern music culture in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan, where government officials, cultural ambassadors and, most significantly, musicians wield their authority, influence, popularity, instruments and voices beyond the traditional norms of their enterprise. Along these lines, the paper will discuss the expansive concept of jazz as symbolically appropriated and re-purposed by the performing artist and ​ ​ diplomat associated with the region. Although far from being exhaustive, this work engages with musical activity as a vehicle for information, identity, nationalism and broad meaning.

This includes exploring the role of women in the decolonisation and post- colonial movements and gender changes during the military dictatorship. The article examines women’s social movements that made some significant changes in Somalia over the past seventy years, even though these have not paved the way for fruitful results. In demonstrating that the current attempts to position themselves in political circles by Somali women has its roots during the decolonisation and post-colonial successive Somali governments, the article argues that women failed to benefit from their feminist agenda as the notion of governmentality changed on the way–from democratisation to the dictatorial military regime.
